One of my biggest pet peeves is listening to people whine and complain after the fact. It's annoying to no end to see a bunch of fans act like they would have gotten it right after it went wrong, or say they were for it all along when everything went well. Hindsight is 20-20, and I've got a hunch there will be plenty of it on this board. For that matter, I'm betting there will be a lot of revision of history too after the fact.
So, here I go on record with my thoughts...
I don't know who Jerry should hire. I haven't been in the interviews. I don't know what Jerry is looking for exactly, and I don't know what these coaches are going to do. In the end, I'm banking on Jerry truly wanting what is best for this franchise. Like many others, I worry and hope that his judgment isn't clouded like it has been at other times.
I believe that every single coach that has been interviewed has something good to add. I also believe that this is a very good job for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the platform in Dallas and the talent that is already here.
There are some downsides to this job as well. This is the Dallas Cowboys. There is a huge spotlight on this organization and working with Jerry Jones and Terrell Owens and following Bill Parcells is going to place someone in a difficult situation.
I can't help but feel like the new coach of this team needs to have a certain aura. So much of coaching football is leading men. By the way, leading men doesn't have a ton to do with pumping your fists or yelling, as some fans seem to think. It's about putting people in position to succeed and pusing the right buttons. It's about having confidence in your own abilities and inspiring others to do things with their abilities. This coach needs to be able to do that. He needs to have a presence to go along with a knowledge of football.
Looking over the names that have been prominently mentioned with this job, I have a few thoughts.
Todd Bowles is someone who seems to have the confidence of the players. I think that is a big key. Unfortunately, Todd doesn't have a ton of experience. I think he may be a head coach in the next few years, but I don't think it's that time yet. I would like to see him on the staff next year for the sake of continuity though.
Tony Sparano is another guy who I think is a fine coach. He did a good job with this offense, for the most part. he's also versatile. He's already coached several positions, and he also seemed to have the confidence of many players. Bill reportedly thought highly of him, and Sean Payton also wanted him. Like Bowles, I think he may be a coach in this league. I don't think it's time for him yet either though. Like Bowles, I would like to keep him on the staff.
Jason Garrett is supposed to be a football prodigy of sorts. He's has a great deal of respect and admiration around the league, and I think he was a very good "get". I'm still surprised at all of the hand-wringing over this situation. Dallas has a bright young offensive mind, and people want to complain. I will admit that having a "coach in waiting" could potentially be an awkward situation, but that situation will only be nasty if Jerry forces the issue, Jason forces the issue, or the head coach is very thin-skinned. I don't think Jason is the sort to stab his head coach in the back, so I don't think that is going to happen. I also believe that any head coach who is so threatened by Jason shouldn't be the coach here anyway. I'm not going to worry about him being added to this franchise again. I think this was a good hire. I don't blame Jerry for not making him the head coach though. That's a big step up, and yet a big part of me feels like he wouldn't be a bad option...
Ron Rivera is the newest hot name. I like his defense in Chicago, but no one knows if it's his. I like his presence though, and I like the way his players feel about him. Everyone seems to think he's ready, so he would rank pretty high on my list.
Wade Phillips is a fantastic defensive mind. I love what he could do with this defense, and I think he would allow Jason Garrett to handle most of the offense. I think the biggest thing working against Wade is his lack of "it". I've got a hunch that if Wade loooked a little different or sound differently he might have this job. As is, he might be a better candidate and still come up short.
Mike Singletary strikes me as a leader. I don't know about his Xs and Os, and he would be taking a big step forward as a first time head coach. He's someone who I think could actually handle it though. I love his ability to lead and inspire people. He's another guy who would be higher on my list.
Norv Turner still seems to be the front runner. He's got a past with this organization and Jerry, so that helps. He's also very good at developing QBs and running an offense. He could potentially make Romo everything we hope he can be. He might make this offense just dominant. I think Norv also has enough connections that he could get a quality staff in place. I worry most about Norv's leadership skills. Can he lead men to victory?
And after all of that (and I know it's been dicussed in detail), I come back to the same conclusion. I don't have a clue who should be hired?
It seems to me that every single candidate has some very good qualities, and they all have some serious question marks too. I'm going to hope for the best no matter who gets hired, and I won't throw too much of a fit about it. I don't see how any of us can...
If I had more confidence in Norv's ability to lead men, this wouldn't be an issue to me at all.
If Singletary or Garrett had more experience, I choose them.
If Wade had more of a presence, he might be the guy.
So who is the right pick and who is the wrong one? I guess it all depends on what you value most - leadership, presence, Xs and Os, popular opinion, or past history.
