one topic, i dont ever see much on here, is all this scrutiny on the players, whether its helmut to helmut hits, hitting defenseless recievers, all the personal fouls, the suspensions, the fines...etc etc, is it starting to turn you off as football fans?

as a fan i understand player safety, i remember when the first rules came out stating a player couldn't launch himself or lead with the crown of his helmut (ala Chuck Cecil style), it took a little getting used to, but i was fine with it after awhile.

then it became you cannot hit a QB at all with your helmut to the head, and here recently if you so much as graze his helmut with your hand its a penalty.

now its become insane, all over the field, players are getting flagged for helmut to helmut hits, im sorry but thats just insane, how can you make a tackle and not lead somewhat with you head?

it gets worse, here is a video of Ed Reed who makes 2 big hits, the first one is not flagged, the second one was, which he got a 1 game suspension (later reduced) tell me exactly what Ed Reed shouldve done under the current rules? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l6ZgxzQg7g

Drew Brees said yesterday (which i think he will get fined for) quote.. Brees said during his weekly news conference that Goodell has “very little to no credibility” with players and fans because of the way the situation was handled.

theres a whole other laundry list of issues i have with Goodell, without getting into great detail about.

1. player safety was at an all time high, yet he was pushing for a 18 game season.
2. the possibilty of having a Superbowl in London.
3. his role during the players lockout.
4. the Saints bounty gate scandal.
5. if he fines or suspends you, you can appeal, but your appeal is to him.
6. the latest gossip, he wants to expand the playoff format from 12 teams to 16 teams.

your thoughts

Goodell is bad for the league. The NFL is all about money and gets watered down every day. As with everything, the old days are gone and either you get on board with how things are done today or leave. Each day I get closer to leaving, too me the product on the field is no where near what it was 15-20 years ago.

You have a point both of those hits by Reed where good hits.
In the second one Branch started the motion of lowering his head for the hit, what is a defensive player supposed to do. Also you notice how Branch a respected Vet gives Reed a pound at the end of the play to signify good hit.

Goodell days are numbered I say.

i wouldve added the hit on Dez Bryant last week, but i didnt have a clip of it, although it benefitted us at that time, i still feel it was a bad call.

I don't like the direction, that's for sure. Too many sissy rules, BS PI calls etc.

I started out liking Goodell because he wanted to clean up the NFL image. Now I think he's tarnished it so bad that they need to move on.

Cleaning up the off the field BS and holding players to a higher standard of accountability was something I was looking forward to, but this other stuff that is affected the on the field value is his own power trip.

My biggest problem with the league is that there are too many teams. I thought the sweet spot for the league was 28 teams. I would also like to see them go back to having more rounds of the draft. I know neither will ever happen again, but other than that, the league is what they wanted it to be. They have complete parity, most teams are in the playoff hunt, which leads to people going to games, buying merchandise and lining the owners pockets.

i used to feel that way also, but its actually better now, soon as the draft is over, you can start signing UDFA's that you are hoping will go undrafted. if the draft was any longer we may not have got Tony Romo.

I couldn't agree more!

He has without question turned me off as a fan of the NFL. In fact, as much as I love the Cowboys, I could easily see myself no longer watching if things keep going the way they are. I understand the need for player safety, but not at the expense of changing the entire premise of the sport. There are other ways to curb injury rather than changing major rules and functions of the game itself.

Goodell is a plague on this league.

oh and i forgot, him wanting to eliminate the kickoff completely...slipped my mind, and who knows whats next.

As a whole, the league is in a steep decline, albeit from a very high starting point.

Lawyers are going to take the game down. Goodell and the league office is scurrying around trying to plug every legal hole, and the result is a bevy of horrible rules that ruin the game's integrity and purity. Soon, we won't even have kickoffs, and all blocks below the waist will be a penalty, no matter where they occur.

That, and the parity that seeped into the league, is making the league far less "professional sports", and a lot more "entertainment".

Sadly, once the lawyers finally chew this league up for every penny it can find, the result will be a lost profession for a lot of guys that, frankly, can't do anything else of note.

For all of the complaining about Goodell, and his "ruining" or "tarnishing" of the NFL, two things need to be considered:

1. He works for the owners, and is doing their bidding. If you are upset about the lockout, the 18 game schedule or an overseas Super Bowl, blame the owners. They have made it his role to grow the sport financially, and all of the aforementioned items are part and parcel to that goal.

2. The mishandling of the bounty case and the rules modifications in the name of player safety was in response to lawsuits by ex-players. In other words, protecting the bottom line of the league.

You can disagree with his methods, but he is doing the bidding of the owners, not acting as a rogue agent.

He's been turning me off as a football fan for years now. People on this forum kept trying to say it wasn't him, it was the owners, blah, blah..

He's awful for the game. Period.

well not surprised that you ignore the reality that it is the owners that are behind all this

as regards the rules nad everything else if there is someone to blame its LAWYERS.

This is all being done in response to current or future lawsuits.
