Thoughts on Kawaan Short?

Anyone studied his tape or evaluated him? He didn't work out at the combine due to a hamstring injury.
He has some pretty impressive college numbers coming out of the big ten. I've heard late first to late 2nd round grade on him.
By his own admission he was a little inconsistent last year due to playing at a heavier weight and tiring some later in games.Dropped some weight and weighed in at 299 in Indy. Said he thought playing at this weight would help his stamina. Not sure if Purdue wanted him at a heavier weight? Could he be a potential 3 tech DT target in a trade down scenario?

He almost has to be a 3tech IMO. He doesn't anchor well enough to play the other DT position. He could be a DE if he slimmed down but I don't really see that happening. He takes plays off. Has a lot of talent but he doesn't always play hard. He doesn't bend so he plays really high. I don't really love him. I am not sure he will give you maximum effort on game day.

Like the kid but he is in that Late first/Early 2nd range which would make him a reach at 18 and he probably won't be there when we pick in round 2

It is almost impossible to find a scouting report on Short that does not mention his work-ethic issues.

I think he's a 3rd or 4th Rd pick myself. If you look at his production and how he got his sacks, here is what you see.

2012:

EKentucky 1
Notre Dame 2
Marshall 1
Iowa 1
Illinois 1
OkSt. 1

Nothing against Michigan, Wisconsin, OSU, or Penn St., all teams with decent OL talent. I mean, how good is ND, I can't really answer that.

2011:

SEMoSt. .05
Minn. 1
Illinois 2
OSU 3

Again, nothing against talented OLs. Now, he did have 3 against OSU but that was a very bad year for Ohio State (6-7, 1-5 on the road in 2011) and they had a lot of players suspended/dismissed/transfer.

I just don't see it with Short. I think he has talent but I don't know that he has shown that he can produce against good talent at the NCAA level consistently.

There are a ton of options and not all of them have to be done through the draft. It is conceivable that we may be able to have guys on our own roster who could step in and fill the position or perhaps FA.

BTW, I don't think Short is Spencer coming out. I think Short probably has more natural ability then Spencer did at similar stages of development but I think that Spencer probably worked harder.

Tank Carradine did nothing to increase his draft position which is a DL who has just had an ACL replacement. He was not Sheldon Richardson before the injury.

I think Vacarro will be there for us, and the Star Lotulelei saga has just started. Several sites have Sheldon Richardson dropping down after his slow 40 time, for me it did not matter.

Richardson's 10-yard time was almost identical to Floyd's. His vert, BJ and arm length were better.

Forty (unofficial) 4.87
Ten 1.68

Arm 31 3/4

Player Sheldon Richardson

Weight 294
Forty 5.02
Forty (unofficial) 4.97
Ten 1.69
Bench 30

I think Kawaan Short will continue getting closer to the 18th pick as the Draft gets closer. I did a spread sheet on Five of the top DL over the last two years and he left all the others in the dust. Ex. 13 more tackle for loss than the second best, 13.5 sacks which was double the next best, 2 ints-again double the next best, 5 kicks/punts blocked, 6 Passes broken up. All better than the rest by far. Surprisingly he had 0 QB hurries which is hard to believe with all the TFL and Sacks he had. Maybe they didn't keep that stat at Purdue.

Some of the others I included in this exercise was Sheldon Richardson, Shariff Floyd, Sylvester Williams. Two players that kept pace with Short in some areas, although it was at much smaller schools, was Chris Jones with Bowling Green and Brandon Williams with Missouri Southern State.

I feel Dallas will take a strong look at Short, if the other top values are gone at 18th, or in a trade down to 23rd or 24th. This trade down might be the best route and pick up another 3rd round pick. We could even get more aggressive and bundle this third with our 47th and trade up into the early 2nd round 33-39. That would give us two solid picks before the 39th pick and still have our 3rd(80).

INDIANAPOLIS -- When former Purdue defensive tackle Kawann Short stepped on the scale at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine, the number that popped up was less than 300 for the first time since Short was in middle school.

Short weighed in at 299 pounds, which he feels is a weight that will make him a more effective player in the NFL.

"Yeah, I feel more versatile now," Short said. "My conditioning is way better than it used to be. I can play a lot more, I can run a lot more, and I can hustle. So that was the main thing I was trying to do, just find a weight I was comfortable at, and keep going at that."

Short laughed when asked the last time he came in under 300 pounds.

"Sixth grade -- no, I'm just playing," Short said. "But I want to say middle school, actually."

Short had an inconsistent senior season in which he was often criticized for having a motor that runs hot and cold. He thinks his current weight will be more conducive to lasting the entire game.

"It was my fault that I let my motor die," Short said on Saturday. "I was just trying to play an amount of snaps to help the team win, and doing my job. So I can say I should have tapped out a couple of times, but that's not my character. So I'm just trying to win. And as far as the weight I was at, really wasn't built for playing 80-plus snaps."

That's interesting for sure. Out of curiosity I looked up Shariff Floyd's game log for the last 2 years.

2012
0 sacks in SEC conference play
0 sacks vs. Bowling Green
0 vs. Louisiana Lafayette
0 vs.Jacksonville State
His first sack of the year came in the last game against FSU.
He then had 2 sacks vs. UL in the bowl game.

2011
0 sacks in SEC conference play
0 vs. Florida Atlantic
0 vs UAB
0 vs Furman
His only sacks that year came against that same sorry OSU team. He had 1.5 in the bowl game.

4.5 sacks for career. 3.5 of those came in the 2 bowl games.

Part of that is scheme I think on behalf of Shariff but yeah, I agree. They don't use him as a 3Tech at Florida. He's really a 2 Gap DT in Pruitt's system. When I watch him, he has really good lateral movement and he comes off the ball well but he lacks something. He's not real instinctive to me. I don't know, I like him as a player but I don't think he's a pass rusher like some think he will be.

Short on the other hand, he could easily be a pass rusher if he just had more high octane in the old motor.

I like Short alot. I think he can and does make plays.

There are lots of reports about his motor, so that's something to consider.

He's not my favourite DT in the draft, and I don't take him at 18 because of the work-ethic concerns, but I still like the player

I go to Purdue. He was probably our best player. However, I can't stand watching our football team... I only went to a couple of games this year. I hear the knock on him is work ethic.
