Thoughts on NFL Week 17

- The season is done and so are Steve Spagnola, Raheem Morris and Bill Polian.
- Next up should be Norv Turner and Al Smith.
- Too bad Jerry Jones won’t fire himself as the Cowboys general manager.
- Somebody’s going to get a good defensive coordinator Spagnola.
- Good for Chan Gailey, sitting Stevie Johnson on the bench after another stupid celebration costs his team a penalty.
- Wonder if this were a playoff game for the Bills he would have done it.
- Principles really aren’t tested until they cost you something.
- The Patriots spotted the Bills 21 points and still won.
- The Pats-Bills game was an exact reversal of the first game; this time with New England coming back from a double-digit deficit.
- Two non-playoff teams have jumped out with early leads against the Patriots. Come playoff-time, Brady may not be able to rally them.
- You so much as breathe on Tom Brady, and it’s a penalty.
- If your one complaining because the Patriots, up by 28, passed the ball to get Rob Gronkowski a tight end receiving record, quit your whining. That’s what coaches are supposed to do for their players.
- Matt Flynn is playing for a starting job … somewhere other than Green Bay.
- Denver?
- Bad fumble call on the Lions kickoff return. Sometimes, I just don’t know what the refs are looking at on replays.
- The dictionary definition of robbery: the crime of taking something from someone by force; the NFL definition of robbery: the Lions touchdown catch ruled not a touchdown.
- I think the NFL should take a page from the NCAA and review all questionable touchdowns.
- Packers Jordy Nelson sure plays like a No. 1 receiver.
- He muffed that fair catch, though, another non-call by the refs.
- This had to be one of the worst officiated games I’ve seen this year.
- This would be a good year for a split MVP between Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers.
- If it could be split three ways among Brees, Rodgers and Brady, I wouldn’t complain.
- Did the Panthers forget that Marques Colston plays receiver for the Saints too?
- Jimmy Graham, as good with one hand as with two.
- Detroit still too undisciplined a team to go far in the playoffs.
- Should it be an excessive celebration penalty if you’re already on the ground in the end zone? Ryan Grant probably doesn’t think it should.
- Can anyone stop the Saints from scoring?
- When people say Michael Vick hits players in the numbers, I don’t think they had in mind him nailing DeAngelo Hall in the back of the jersey.
- Even without LeSean McCoy, the Eagles were too much for the Commanders.
- Commanders owner will probably sell the farm to get RGIII.
- I can see what they mean when they say Jason Avant has some strong hands.
- Vikings QB Joe Webb might have a future in the NFL – as a competent backup quarterback.
- Dan Carpenter nails it from 58 yards and with that nails the coffin on the Jets playoff hopes.
- If you watched the Jets-Dolphins game, you witnessed the self-destruction of Mark Sanchez.
- Randy Starks will be haunting Mark Sanchez in his nightmares.
- Way to send Jason Taylor into retirement, Miami.
- If there’s one play the replay refs could have swallow their whistles it would have been to grant Taylor his defensive touchdown.
- Uh, you were saying about a Super Bowl appearance, Rex?
- I think we see why the Steelers gave up on Santonio Holmes.
- We know the “C” on his uniform doesn’t stand for “Character.”
- Wanna give the bird to a photographer, Brad Scott? “Can’t Wait!”
- Another Johnson receiver (Bryant) not named Andre tries to provide the Texans some last-minute heroics.
- Titans Ahmard Hall just breathed a sigh of relief.
- The Texans’ fate is in the hands of Jake Delhomme. I don’t know how much confidence that inspires, but I doubt it’s much.
- Indianapolis should have just forfeited the game. Their loss was a forgone conclusion.
- Yet even in defeat, they get Lucky.
- It’s going to be interesting to see what the Colts do with Peyton Manning.
- How Jim Caldwell still has a job, I’ll never know.
- If business takes priority over loyalty, the Colts will cut Manning and usher in a new era with Andrew Luck.
- To those who think it would be crazy to trade Manning, if Joe Montana can be traded anyone can be traded.
- Based on the performance of Cam Newton and Andy Dalton, no way Luck should sit his first year.
- Speaking of Cam, he played more like Clark Kent against the Saints.
- If any back deserved this season’s rushing title, it is Maurice Jones-Drew.
- The man just continued to produce even if his team didn’t.
- John Elway was right not to be non-committal on Tim Tebow.
- I’ll admit I’m a Tebow fan. And I’ve enjoyed the last-minute heroics he put up this year. But I’ve always said he has been rushed into the lineup, which wasn’t the approach for him. He needed a few years of seasoning. Still, he did enough to get his team in the playoffs.
- I don’t think Elway will have much of a backlash from Tebow Nation if Tebow continues to perform like he has in the past three games.
- I think Tebow’s performance has silenced Tebowmania.
- Maybe that will clear the bandwagon of its idol worshippers.
- I think Denver gives Tebow one more year, and if he’s not a better thrower, he won’t be starting for the Broncos in 2013.
- You can’t blame the Denver loss on the defense.
- Patrick Willis has to make that catch on the Broncos last drive.
- Kyle Orton gets a measure of revenge, although he didn’t do all that much and is still average at best.
- Exercise in futility: KC without an opening drive score.
- Kyle Orton gets revenge? Regardless, he’s average at best.
- Romeo, oh, Romeo, the job should be yours.
- Raise your hand if you trust a Joe Flacco-led Ravens team in the playoffs?
- The Ravens will go as far as Ray Rice’s legs will take them.
- Terrell Suggs should be considered for Defensive Player of the Year.
- Can we get a flag for pass interference on A.J. Green, refs? The Ravens defender had so much jersey he might as well have taken Green’s jersey to the cleaners.
- Raiders coach Hue Jackson has a right to be upset.
- With a division championship on the line, the Raiders just couldn’t deliver.
- I like Jackson’s tough talk. Not on Rex Ryan’s level, but that’s a good thing.
- So now hitting someone with your butt is unnecessary roughness, as I witnessed in the Chargers-Raiders game.
- I just don’t know what to make of the Chargers. They look like world beaters one week, beat down another.
- The Falcons quickly dispatched of the Buccaneers and sealed Morris’ fate.
- Julio Jones is going to be a beast in this league, if he can stay healthy.
- How much longer can Ronde Barber go?
- Larry Fitzgerald just has crazy glue hands.
- His last catch was just insane. If this guy gets to the Hall of Fame – and he’s on his way there – that catch needs to be on his highlight film.
- Congratulations to Hines Ward for joining the 1,000 catches club.
- Rashard Mendenhall is gone for the playoffs, but that shouldn’t matter much against the Broncos.
- David Acker can kick and throw.
- Is Michael Crabtree ready to step up during the playoffs?
- I still don’t have much confidence in Alex Smith. But I have in Jim Harbaugh, the NFL’s Coach of the Year.
- At least the Vikings have something to celebrate, Jared Allen breaking the team single sack record.
- If Minnesota’s head coach gets canned, I’ve got my headline ready: “Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!”
- At least when he’s done with the NFL, Terance Newman has a career as a high hurdle.
- How many times are you going to let guys leap you like a pole vault bar?
- Did anyone expect the Cowboys to win this game?
- Dallas has no mental toughness whatsoever.
- Then again, how can you cultivate a mentally tough team when the owner has built what amounts to a stripper pole in his own stadium?
- You don’t quarterback sneak a 6’2 quarterback a full yard from the first down.
- But that’s not to take anything from Michael Boley’s fantastic play to prevent Romo picking up a first down.
- At least Laurent Robinson is a keeper.
- Miles Austin has regressed.
- Despite his greatness, Jason Witten has got to be the stiffest, most awkward tight end playing today.
- Drop your knees, drop your shoulder and make the first down for Romo’s sake.
- This loss can’t be placed at the feet of Tony Romo. His swollen hand? Maybe.
- The Giants victory can be laid at the feet of Eli Manning.
- He consistently sidestepped the Cowboys rush and made bullet passes to his receivers.
- Victor Cruz knows how to get to the end zone, no matter how far away he is.
- I don’t know what Gerald Sensabaugh was thinking, making a PeeWee-football error on Cruz’s long-distance touchdown.
- As a safety, you’ve got to take better pursuit angles. What the heck were you thinking running directly behind Terance Newman when you should have taken an over-the-top angle to catch Cruz?
- I think the Cowboys season was over when DeMarco Murray went down for the year.
- Rob Ryan’s defense has been awful down the stretch, but so was Wade’s so I’m willing to give him another year.
- The 4,000 yard passing club is growing in membership.
- The ground game belonged to the little men (Rice, Jones-Drew) this year.

Top 5

1. Green Bay Packers – Even their backup throws for 500 yards and 6 touchdowns.
2. New England Patriots – A 21-point lead is not safety against Brady, at least not in the regular season.
3. New Orleans Saints - Drew Brees has been on a tear.
4. San Francisco 49ers – Just don’t think their offense can’t stay with the Saints.
5. Baltimore Ravens – They’re built to beat the Patriots in New England, if it gets to that point.

Bottom 5

28. Cleveland Browns – Trent Richardson will help protect Colt McCoy like an offensive lineman would.
29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 10 straight wins merits this spot.
30. Minnesota Vikings – They need help everywhere.
31. St. Louis Rams – Sam Bradford will find his BFF when the Rams pick Matt Kalil.
32. Indianapolis Colts – They picked a good year to suck.

This is my last Thoughts column for the year. Thank you for your attention and your eyes, even if you didn’t always respond. And, as always, your additions, clarifications, corrections and comments are welcomed.

Opps. Buccaneers have lost 10 straight not won 10 straight.
