Over the last couple days i found myself pondering this past season, our current state, the draft, and my expectations for this upcoming year. I ! like you - have watched several teams ON PAPER get better ( still remains to be seen if the moves were good one's ) or if they end up like the Eagles AKA dream team of the past !. While our front office marched to the beat of Jerry & Stephan Jones drum.

A sense of calm, and general optimism came over me regarding where i see the Cowboys headed. This is not to say some particular things do not bother me, but rather taking a overall look at everything. Based on that way of thinking i believe the cowboy ship overall is headed in the right direction, just not fast enough i believe would be the best way to describe it to calm this rabid fanbase.

Looking at this past season:
I knew we would struggle ! since early season suspensions left us crippled at key positions, revamped rookie secondary needed that first year to get the experience, cmon we all knew their were going to be growing pains ( But when the game starts, fans lose that common sense and the fandom emotion takes over ) Later in the year injuries were everywhere ( no excuse just fact ) - Bottom Line i knew going into last season it would be a wasted year ! This wasting prime years of talent needs to change!

Major Disappointments

1- IMO - Anthony Brown - Regression! his defense of routes inside were horrendous compared to defending outside routes. Lets hope he has worked on his weaknesses and gotten more aggressive !
2- Lack of Use - Ryan Switzer - I cannot express how disappointed i was that we couldn't see him and Beasley on the field together. I want to see Both of them on the field abusing linebackers more this year Please !
3- The talk of Dak cannot carry this team by himself without zeke! who cares i just care about wins - This is a team sport and i find the dak bashing ridiculous. How many teams do you think have a QB that can carry a franchise - there aren't many.
4- O-Line was a disaster last year - enough said !
5- Gathers Injury - Talk about a Mystery It was like a game of Clue No one knew what was going on !

BOTTOM LINE - Wasted Another Year - BUT Bright side Secondary was playing better and coming together - D Law balled out - and Jaylon Smith played a full year - So Reason for Hope

Present

1- Many needs to fill some glaring issues ! However even though we started slow in FA we made some solid pickup's while signing them to good contracts ( based on what i have read and this forums discussions )
2- Due to above we have left us in a good position to be far more flexible and less predictable in this draft - I did not or should say do not want to waste a 1st round pick on WR -
3- I really wanted the boys to make a play for Earl Thomas still do LOL him back with Richards helping to lead our young aggressive DB's in a system he knows like the back of his hand would be invaluable- ET would be able to correct our young secondary on the fly. IMO i feel he has many good years left.

Draft

1- If ET doesn't work out - I want to trade up for Derwin James ( I don't often ever vote to move up but i feel he is worth it ) he would be the perfect compliment and addition to this aggressive secondary. Please Jerry go get this guy
2- I would like to see the focus of this draft lean more towards the D side of the ball - Outside of grabbing a lineman and possible later round receiver. Tighten up this D
3- Please dont draft a TE - just get Gathers on the field please

Future

1- Love the addition of Kris Richards for some reason i cannot wait to see what he does with this secondary - i find myself constantly thinking about this he will play to the strength of our guys pressing receivers. Plus that video someone posted about how he teaches in practice got me really pumped up for so long it felt like this secondary was soft - i don't feel that way any longer we have some guys with dog in them back there !
2- Hopefully we have 0 suspensions and injuries to start the season and do not start behind the 8 ball
3- Really hope this WR Core comes back with chips on there shoulders ready to ball out !
4- I want this team to come out hungry, angry, and with an attitude ready to bury teams
5- The additions of that Full back from the raiders should give dak more options and did i mention my excitement for the backup RB Smith wish we saw even more of him last year LOL

Eagles will be a beast again make no mistake they have made some smart moves it will be tough to catch them - but i trust McClay when draft time comes -bring home another strong class - lets not shoot ourselves in the foot before the season starts and IMO we should be fighting for the division come the end of the season ! I tend to look at life from the glass half full approach in case you couldn't tell LOL the eagles and us will be battling come end of season.

I just don’t think New secondary coach Keith Richards is going to get any satisfaction here. In the current situation time is not on his side and Garrett is under Jerry’s thumb.

They had the CB Brown playing outside leverage most of the time. That requires inside help on in-breaking routes but the help was either late or non-existent most of the time. Jaylon was often the intended help-defender.

What sucked for Brown is that once they made Awuzie the starter, they also quit playing the LCB in outside leverage all the time.

After Awuzie became the starter, they did have Brown rotate for a couple of series each for Awuzie and Lewis. He looked much better then, in part because they were not always forcing him to play outside leverage.

Derwin James will be a Strong Safety. Earl Thomas is a Free Safety.

Stephen Jones indicated they were not interested in the free agent Safeties because most of them were Strong Safety types.

Earl from a scheme point would be a great help on the field though knowing what richards wants

Yes, the coach is Kris RIchard (no S).

Side Note: Keith Richards dropped the S from the end of his name for a period of time. They claim that a manager thought Richard sounded better but the story I heard a long time ago was the it was Keith's way of giving his Dad the middle finger.

I agree; however, it is highly unlikely the Cowboys would acquire him. Even if the Seahawks cut him, I don't know if the Cowboys would pay the type of contract that he will request. In a trade he just has 1 year remaining on his current contract and wants it extend now. The contract is part of the reason the Seahawks have considered trading him.

very proud of what was accomplished.
I miss Coach Landry.....daily.

present-frustrating.....but hopeful.

But i had heard not sure how reliable they were looking to re-coup 2nd or 3rd round picks they don't have ! I really wonder if Earl would do a fair contract to come home it couldn't hurt to at least inquire and if he said no he wanted to have a fat contract cool move on get James LOL a man can dream hahahahaha !
 
I wouldn’t give up a second and a third for ET or to move up
Pick good players, try to add another pick in the top 3 rnds
No one player who is not a QB is worth gutting your draft for to me
 
If you are going all in and swinging for the bleachers, you make the trade for Thomas, sign Bowman and maybe one of the FA defensive tackles like Hankins or Logan. Whatever remaining draft picks you have go to the defense for depth at LB, maybe another pass rusher and a G on offense to compete.

You do that if you truly think Dak can make the next step. I don't think they believe that. So they are likely gonna wait one more year to decide about going all in or considering a high draft pick on a QB.
