1. Hats off to the replacements: I was quietly impressed by Steele, McGovern, Wilson, Osa, Kearse, and Armstrong. These guys have stepping up into larger roles due to injuries but were holding their own. To me that's encouraging, Martin has returned, and once Collins, Gallup, D.Wilson, Lawrence, Gregory, and Gallimore also return we might have some real depth in rotation.
2. Splash plays in the secondary: It's a huge upgrade. The secondary has been pretty horrible in terms of giving up yards, but saving grace is that the secondary have come away with 5 turnovers so far this season and Kearse was robbed of a 6th. We lead the league in turnover differential (+4) which is huge.
3. Our weakest starters are Biadasz and Brown: I don't think they've been horrible (Brown much better week 2) but to they are the clear weak links and getting beat more than we'd like. It's two areas I'd like us to investigate alternatives. Whether that's giving reps to backup (McGovern, Joseph, or Wright), or bringing someone via trade/FA I don't know. Upgrades might not be available, they haven't been terrible.
4. Shultz over Jarwin: Shultz has made 6/6 receptions but also been a much better blocker than Jarwin. I wasn't sure who the no.1 should be coming into the season and it's still not 100% clear but so far Shultz has looked better than Jarwin.
5. Less blown plays: The defense isn't blowing nearly as many plays and with a more aggressive front seven, when we do it's not always being capitalized on. That's a huge improvement.
6. Low football IQ: I feel like there's been some bad mistakes by the coaching staff. Nothing egregious in isolation, but the sum of mistakes is just far too high. We've seen delay of game penalties, substitution mistakes, bad 4th down decisions, clock management mistakes, and far too aggressive calls on special teams in general. The players are delivering on the field, the game plan has been great, but game day organisation and decisions have been woefully inadequate.
