Thoughts on Will McClay being the GM once Jerry steps down

McClay is WAY overrated by Cowboys fans and media
Every good pick is ascribed to him and every bad one is blamed on Jerry or Quinn or another coach
There is a reason he never moved to a real GM job. He is a good reflection of what is wrong with the franchise: sit around and be held responsible for nothing
Mazi? Taco? Kelvin?

If Gnats find a Qb, that is highly possible.
They signed Winston and Wilson. Yes, we know what those two are at this point, but they should get much better play than they got out of Jones and/or DeVito. They will beat us once this year just on being due.

My thought was about the real pressure to win.

Jerry agrees. He said that “people do their best work with their back to the wall.” That may be true, but no one’s back is to the wall in Dallas, not even McCarthy last year. He made his money. He will coach again.

Many cliches apply. “Lead by example” is one.

After every tough loss, Dak repeats what he was coached to say….”I need to be better and I will,” that type of crap, but I don’t feel a genuine disappointment in losing because he is going home to a fortune and is already a star. Where’d he learn that?

Yeah fan tours at practice and helicopters maybe didn’t directly lead to losing a particular game, but it may have affected the way a player approaches the urgency of winning.

The overall culture is a mess and I get the feeling that before long, many players learn to believe it’s just a show. You get paid and your star status either way.

Part of me still wants to talk football around here at times, but the idea of filling a hole in the 22 with a draft pick feels like pissing in the ocean and expecting it to turn green. A makeover won’t make the terminal cancer go away.

I don’t know about that. 12 hours ago I would have completely agreed with you. Take this for what it’s worth but I watched Mike Fisher at 6:pm yesterday and he reported that there is a plan in place for Jerry’s “transition”. So according to Fisher once Jerry passes the roles have already been established and a document has been sent to the league of:
Stephen- co owner, responsible for day to day operations/marketing
Charlotte: co owner, responsible for league issues
Jerry Jr.: has a role but not reported
McClay: GM of the team
Poor Jerry, Jr. What did he do to not deserve part ownership? Is he not Jerry's offspring??

Thoughts on Will Mcclay being the GM once Jerry steps down
lol. When exactly is that supposed to happen? Will McClay may not be with the organization whenever that does happens. Heck. Some people here may not be around WHENEVER that does actually happen.

My thought is perhaps everyone should put away their stopwatches. No one knows when Jerry Jones will no longer be the general manager. He should not have named himself general manager in the first place! And that was over freaking thirty years ago!

How would you feel about Mcclay being our GM, do you think it's a no brainer, he's earned it, we saw this coming, or you hate this and want someone else to fulfill the role??? Please give your thoughts
Thought #1: Will McClay may not be the best GM candidate for this team or any other team.

Thought #2: McClay began as a scout for the team in 2002.

Thought #3: On day one of that year, McClay was more pro football intelligent, more qualified as a general manager, than Jones.

Thought #4: Will McClay should have been able to assume the general manager position YEARS ago for at least one freaking day on the job. Jones could have fired him on day two.

That's the problem. The decision-maker has blocked common sense from potentially improving the overall team. The question should not be what people think of McClay. The question should be who will be the most qualified football person appointed to FULLY assume the job, at any future time, out of as many candidates as possible, including McClay.

Coffee..?

Yes please just no Jones

I have no idea. We have to see what McClay does IF he gets the job and we know Jerry is not meddling.

If the Jones family passdown plan is to give the whole thing to Stephen then I am not sure Stephen wouldn't just assume the same Jerry dual role of owner/GM.

Now Charlotte could perhaps name either McClay or an outside voice as GM.

I'm guessing but that's my opinion.

McClay is and has been the GM for years now.
So if jerry dies or steps down, nothing will change.
He might get the title of GM, but Stephen will still meddle like he does now.

So dont look for any changes, and McClay will have the job for as long as he pleases Stephen.

This team will never be "Normal" again.

Lol, I know right. Who did he piss off to be the black sheep of the family. He’s one notch above Alexandra at this point.
He didnt like booze, the party bus, microphones and interviews.
Maybe he thought they should just hire a good HC, and a real GM !! And win more SB's.

All those would get him in the doghouse pretty quick.

Stephen is basically the GM now. Like any GM he gets owners approval but Stephen is calling the shots mostly.

Agreed, and he is the cheap one, so any GM in title would have to work within the same framework anyway, unless…they have several/many losing seasons in a row and someone finally admits that real change is needed.

I’m not at all convinced McClay is the answer anyway, and he may have no additional power.

What I do know is that more mediocrity means only more of the same. They need to be bad for a good while if winning is ever going to happen again.

I liked McClay as the desperado's head coach. I liked him joining the Cowboys, and I continued to like him but now I think he has been neutered too long to be anything more than a personnel guy.

Interesting. Yeah that could be.

It really feels to me as if Dallas ever gets to where they are a real contender again it’ll have to be all fresh blood. Too much stagnation and being “comfortable,” but you can plead “bad luck” off three 12 win seasons, then blame last year on injuries. That’s not the problem.

Jerry will never house clean and it has to start with him anyway, so gonna have to wait him out and hope the kid understands this. I give it 10-20%. Slowly coming to terms with any real enjoyment I had with this team is behind me. Doesnt mean I’m not pissed over it lol.
