First of all, give the Cowboys credit for doing a legitimate search for a DC. They spoke to many candidates and found their guy. It was clear, management allowed Schott to take control of the process and pick his assistant. This is progress as Jerry would normally bring in 1-2 candidates and make a quick decision.

Parker in my opinion, is a similar hire to Klayton Adams. A young, hungry rising star in the coaching circles that there wasn't any prior relationship with. He comes from a strong coaching tree which includes Fangio, Vance Joseph and Evero. He has coached and developed players like Surtain, Mitchell and Dejean into all-pro superstars in a real short time. Yes, all are very talented, but that doesn't mean they become superstars, either. A player like Revel should greatly benefit having Parker and his future staff around.

Yes, we probably will see more of a 3-4 base defense but it is really more multiple depending on the situation. Usually will send just 4, but has simulated pressures. Eagles did a good job of disguising their coverages pre and post snap. John Owning broke down that the Eagles played a ton of cover 6 (this has giving Dak problems), Cover 1 and Cover 3. Parker is well adversed in the modern schemes and logs a book of situations that he came across for the 1st time in the past.

Some former players that could be on the Cowboys radar: Blankenship, CJ Gardner-Johnson, PJ Lock, Dean and Phillips from the Eagles.

Really like the hire, it is forward thinking and potentially could have found our Adams on the Defensive side. I have some issues with Schott as a HC, but his hiring of assistant coaches has been excellent. Let's hope Jerry doesn't force Parker to retain Eberflus Defensive staff as they are still under contract.

I’m cautiously optimistic about it.

He wasn’t my top choice (Jim Leonhard), but he certainly wasn’t my least choice (Gannon) either.

I like his coaching tree and history because I admire the coaches and systems he’s worked for.

He’s definitely coached some excellent players, but they were higher pedigree to begin with. A lot of them 1st round or very early draft picks.

He’ll have much less to work with in the secondary in Dallas to start.

I had Leonhard also higher then him, but they are in the same bucket so to speak. Both are rising stars in the coaching circles, have some experience in college and the pros, but never called plays on this level. Both are defensive back coaches by trade. Think Leonhard is closer to becoming a future HC which helps the Cowboys as Parker will be more of a long-term piece if he works out. I don't think you can go wrong with either candidate. I was worried a little about that Viking guy and wanted no part of Gannon.

Gotta get him some players first before having any type of expectation.

Begin with 5 to 6 new starters and he'll have a fair clean, slate to be judged from.
What they need is an infusion of veteran talent, ones who will get the unit playing on the same page.

I honestly really like the ‘Front 5’ group of Ezeraku, and Clowney outside with Clark, Osa, and Quinnen Williams inside.

Overshown is at least one option at linebacker, and Revel should be a good building block.

Bland is coming back if for no other reason than the contract they signed with him.

By my quick count, that’s 8 starters, leaving 3 or 4 starters to fill.

Good start but Parker needs to have a say in his assistants and the Cowboys need to bring in several defensive free agents that will cost a ton of money. Before we party like 90s let us see the whole plan. Jerry is the type that will think the defensive players are fine all the team needed was coaching. I am still pessimistic about this team. To me nothing changes until the president and GM are removed.

Leonhard will always be the one that got away. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. Jones can also be considered in the same class . To me Leonhard, Parker, and Jones were all on the same tier. I think all three will be defensive coordinators at the end of this hiring cycle.

Excellent, Excellent post!!

I've never heard of Christian Parker. It's his first DC job, so what am I supposed to think about him? The FO has failed to fill this coaching job properly. I guess I should have expected this all along.

Well, hopefully they are bringing Clowney back.

I am not sure his defense will call for 3 DTs starting. He likes a 3-4 base from what I have seen.

We are going to need LBs.

This hire is better than dusting off some old coach from the Vikings that was on his couch watching the NFL the last few years. He probably also fit the low salary JJ wanted.

I am on the cautiously optimistic line.

I think our guys fit the 3-4 better than they do a 4-3 alignment.

Clark has played nose tackle and Williams has played 3-4 DE before as well. There may be an adjustment for OSA, but he’s undersized for 4-3 defensive tackle anyway.

We are going to need LBs.
Agreed.

Yeah I'm wanting 2 LBs because of Overshown uncertainty/durability, Wilson SS replacement as UFA contract and hes lost a step(s) anyway, a slot and boundary corner to go with Revel because of the Bland injury situation. That's 5.

My 6th surrounds whether Clowney is or isn't re-signed.

In my 50 plus years of watching pro ball I have never seen anything like that "so called" linebacker play last year.
