Post in this thread info about a movie that you love that maybe isn't so well known in the US. Could be an independent or foreign film or maybe just a Hollywood film that got overlooked. Include a trailer, if possible.

My choice is La Fée (English title: The Fairy). This film uses bizarre slapstick similar to old silent films. It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I know some people don't like reading subtitles. It's worth setting that aside for one film. Plus, they really don't talk a lot. Most of the humor comes from action. If you're not into artsy French films, don't worry. This film isn't anything like that. Here's the trailer.

Master and Commander: The far side of the world

October Sky

I saw the Devil

The Vengeance Trilogy movies
Sympathy for Mr Vegeance
Old Boy
Lady Vengeance

Old Boy being the best of the three

Star Wars. There are seven of them, all are good. I would recommend them. :)

Two part Movie: Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine & Public Enemy Number One

True story about a French "gangster".

Sophie Scholl The Final Days (2005)

One of my all time favorite movies. A german girl and her brother, along with other friends who formed the WHITE ROSE, stood up against the ****'s

Sophie Scholl – The Final Days (German: Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage) is a 2005 German film by director Marc Rothemund and writer Fred Breinersdorfer. It is about the last days in the life of Sophie Scholl, a 21-year-old member of the anti-**** non-violent student resistance group the White Rose, part of the German Resistance movement. She was found guilty of high treason by the People’s Court and executed the same day, 22 February 1943.

Agree with BP, "I Saw the Devil" is a stunning movie.

I just recently watched it for the first time.

It was on the "Chiller" channel...

At first I thought... "Well it's Korean".

Then I thought... "Oh geez subtitles".

I'll give it 5 minutes.

Then I was hooked.

I saw Sophie Scholl. It was excellent. Well worth the watch. I believe in Germany they named s street in her honor. There's another older film on the same topic. It's older (from the 80s I think) and is titled Die Weiße Rosa (The White Rose), named after the leaflets that Scholl and her colleagues distributed. Both films are worth seeing.

Let The Right One In (better than the English version knock off)

The Great Debaters
(great ensemble)

Hero
(simply beautiful cinematography)

Raise the Red Lantern (1991)

One academy award nomination and many other nominations and wins. You have to stick with it and it does help to know some Mandarin and Chinese culture. Not for everyone but a great drama.

Can't tell you how many times I've watched Master and Commander. Would have won more than two academy awards if not for Return of the King.

I need to rewatch it, then. My brother-in-law says the series of books is great. I saw the film when it first came out and was just ok with it. But maybe it's worth a second viewing.

Back in the 70's there were several "made for TV movies" that were very good that are virtually unheard of today...

"Bad Ronald" - A young mentally disturbed kid who lives with his mother accidently kills a young girl and his mother "hides" him away in the house through the use of a secret room. The mother dies and a new family moves into the house not knowing about their hidden guest.

"Smile" - The story of a small town beauty pageant that has numerous interesting twists. Innocent and funny.

"Snow Beast" - An aggressive bigfoot runs amok on a ski resort in Colorado.

And here's one that was a theatrical release which was shot near Dallas...

"Drive-in". Sometimes it's referred to as "Texas Drive-in". A great period piece from the mid-70's that mocks the disaster film genre of that era. Luv the film.

Dang, other than Master and Commander, haven't heard much of any of these. Good recommendations to explore. Thanks!

Off the top of my head, two John Sayles movies:

A small, quiet, intimate one filmed in Ireland; The Secret of Roan Inish. (just re-watched it yesterday), and

Also a soliloquy on Borders, set in Texas; Lone Star.

The Lone Star trailer is doubleA awful, so no linkage.

Will have to do some pondering on favored foreign films.
