Three-day window open

The NFL has told its teams to adhere to rules against tampering as a new three-day window for negotiating with free agents opened Saturday.

Teams could contact representatives of free agents from other teams beginning at midnight, but the players can't visit any facilities or even talk to those clubs. The league has warned the teams against entering into any agreements with those players before free agency official kicks off on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Traditionally, contracts with free agents have been announced almost as soon as the NFL's business year begins, clearly indicating agreements had been reached before the free agency period began. The league has hoped to limit hints of tampering by creating the negotiating window.

Basically just phrase your definitive contract discussions as hypotheticals and you're all set.

Team: "If we offered 5 years, $25M, what would you say"?

Agent: "If you offered that us, we would likely accept".

Might be interesting to hear the rumors that come out of this. I'm sure Dallas will be linked to every free agent out there in order for agents to drive up their market value.

The only real purpose is to keep teams from complaining about tampering when their player signs with his new team a minute after FA opens. Now the league can just say, "Hey, they had a window."

Of course, now there will be complaints from teams about other teams making contact BEFORE the window opens.
