If the Cowboys want to contend for a playoff spot in 2025, we aren’t going to get there with Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders at RB. Jaydon Blue is a complimentary player who needs to be paired with a back who can carry more of the load.

So how about a trade that could immediately improve our RB room without breaking the bank?

Here are three RBs who could possibly be obtained through a trade that I believe would immediately make us better.
  • Ray Davis, 25, backup RB in Buffalo. A 2024 4th round pick. Underrated coming out of Univ of Kentucky. Was an all SEC RB IN 2023. Powerful, good hands as a receiver. Rushed for 442 yards last year backing up James Cook. Would be an excellent pairing with a speed back. Bills could use some pass rushing help. Dante Fowler for Ray Davis?

  • Justice Hill, 27, backup RB in Baltimore. Has avg 4.6 yards per carry in his career with ravens. An All Big 12 RB out of OK State. Good speed, power when needed. Been stuck behind Derrick Henry but would probably start for most teams. Ravens could really use help at WR depth. How about Jalen Tolbert for Justice Hill?

  • Tahj Brooks, 23, backup RB in Cincinnati. A 6th round pick of the Bengals last spring. A poor man’s Laveon Bell. Combines power with elusiveness. All Big 12 RB two straight years. Best pass blocking back in last year’s draft. Excellent special teams player too. A solid young back that could be paired with Blue. Could be had for a late round pick.
I know these are long shots that probably won’t happen. But if the Cowboys are serious about a playoff run this year, the current RB room won’t be enough. The moves I am proposing make us better without sacrificing big draft capital for the future.

Javonte looked fine to me. Sanders should have been cut and perhaps was kept because Blue and Mafah weren't ready. Maybe if one of them is ready to play he gets cut and we shall see if we are OK or not. Otherwise yeah, we need to add a back but it likely will be a lesser one.

I’m not trading for a RB.

If I were to trade for anything it’s a Corner or Linebacker.

But at both those spots we got Overshown & Revel eventually returning.

If you want better runners you already have them. Just don’t play Sanders.

Blue & Mafah can produce.

Javonte is a legit NFL Runner & looks healthy again. If he’s healthy he will produce.

Do any of those guys beat out the guys we have???
Yes. Especially Davis and Hill. They both have already shown that they would start for most teams. Either of those guys are way better than Javonte Williams.

Brooks would be a long term glue guy. Not a star but definitely a guy who would add immediate long term value to a RB room that lacks it other than Blue. I don’t think Phil Mafah is anything special. If he was he would already be playing.

Gotta disagree with you on this one Catch. Williams is average at best. No burst, some power, average pass blocker. Mafah is just a JAG.

Breece Hall would have been the trade to make but that ship may have sailed.

Rhamondre Stevenson is or will be expendable with the Patriots spending a high pick in this draft on a RB. He doesn’t have juice but he’s probably a step above Williams as a RB.

Don't let Bob fool you how about we allow our actual backs that we brought in both on the squad and in the practice squad get going a little bit let this offensive line gel before we say that any of these guys would be better 'cause how do you know that how do you know that any of these running backs are truly better than what we have?

So I'll answer your question I say no so Bob can say yes and explain it away all he wants because he's jealous of Howie Roseman and he loves the Eagles But we don't even know if their moves work out until they do or they don't.

Their overreactions because Sanders while he had a 49 yard run had a fumble well Derrick Henry also had a fumble Justin Jefferson also had drops look it's one game Let's let the vision and let the coaches make adjustments before we set trade demands after one game....

There were no injuries to speak of after game one meaning the roster is the same and their vision for this team has not changed it just needs to be adjusted that's what you do you play a game the first real live game for 60 minutes and then you can see where you may have made some snap judgments on a player that maybe you take some snaps away from him and you give snaps to someone else it's the same with the linebackers the running backs we have guys that we can move around they can figure out who earns more snaps and who gets less before we worry about bringing in outside help..

That's my take on this so if Bob ends up reading this that's up to him but I'm not even responding 'cause I'm tired of hearing this I think this coaching staff deserves the benefit of the doubt they did a great job preparing for the Eagles and if it hadn't been for a few mistakes we win that game on the road against the Super Bowl champions so why don't we let that that roster be tweaked and maneuvered massaged whatever you want to call it and they'll get it worked out..

I want to see Blue get involved I don't care what was said in that press conference about him I don't believe that for a minute the guy was injured they were rolling with the veterans some coaches do that too often where they rely on veterans and they don't give the younger players a chance and give that old saying they need to earn it..

Was shocking to hear that especially about Liafu so this is a standard quote from Brian Schottenheimer that I'm not liking but I'm hoping it's just him not advertising his plans..

So before we do anything let's play about two or three more games and then we can make one of these trades for any position or any player if need be right now I think this is way too soon to be making these demands 00 we better trade because how we did it 00 how we made a trade for a running back now we need to they have Saquon Barkley why didn't even bother?

So, my game two adjustments would be our own players,
I want a lot more snaps for Liafu like 25 minimum, I want to see Blue in the game and be used for change of pace back, and I don't care if he's inexperienced or not give him the damn ball, and let him learn on the fly he's one of the only backs we have with juice and if Sanders keeps disappointing you bench him or cut him and you bring up Malik Davis..
I think Malik Davis has something It took Rico a little while to have it but what I saw in pre season is a faster twitchier version of Rico he runs like Tony Pollard So we have guys we we have a roster we built in one weekend everybody wants to make changes and I'll never understand it.
I also obviously they need to ride Sam Williams as one of the starters but I think they need to start thinking about making James Houston the other guy at least to get more of the snaps as a starter and you can still work in a whole bunch of different edge rushers...
And hopefully Terence Steele improved some because if he doesn't they might have to think about putting Nate Thomas or somebody out there because he's a liability and with the speed pass rushers we're going to find out in this game against the Giants they have those guys in bunches and we're about to find out how bad he wrecks the game and gets our quarterback hurt to where something might need to be changed there...

Year and here comes the responses from some of the Super posters in here,

they're going to tell me that they read somewhere that acquiring talent is a year-round affair and that we should always be trying to get better,

well, that is true, but when you build a roster you have a practice squad, and you have a depth chart that you can tweak to make your team better because those are the people you brought with you, and after one game you don't make wholesale changes to your team for no reason....

why? and who are these people? what have they done? they are all back ups and we already have two back ups.
I don't see a difference maker in any of them. not worth the trade.

It's maddening how they sit on their hands, expecting some bottom feeding player to impact the team at a high level. Seeing the Eagles just traded for Tank Bigsby and that's with the 2024 RB leader healthy ........

He's not trying to fool anyone are they really happy with Blue I think if they were he'd surely be playing right now. This offense just needs another runner that can give us something that's all. I want blue to play too, but if he's not ready then he's more of a liability than anything. We can't just go off his speed

I don't see the point of making any trades at this point. Other teams are playing their rookies, I see no reason why the Cowboys shouldn't give Blue and Mafah a chance. What can it hurt. This team is not winning a Super Bowl this year. Just because they gave the Eagles a hard time in the first game - and still lost - I am not buying this notion that they are a team that can contend. It is still one game, and honestly, the Eagles offense looked very conservative to me.

I also don't trust Jerry making any trades for a RB. What would he give away?

I know RB is a visible position but I don't quite understand the willingness to trade away assets for a RB at this point. Not saying there aren't viable players out there but don't we need to give they guys we commited to a little time?

If I'm trading for something, it's another starting caliber interior Dlineman or maybe a linebacker.

I don't see us trading draft picks for any RB unless it's closer to the deadline and we are looking like a playoff team. Javonte Williams looked better than expected. They aren't giving up on Sanders over 1 fumble or being caught by a LB who had a good angle and was at full speed because he was chasing from the snap, not dealing with any blockers.

They need to see what they have in both Blue and Mafa at some point as well. Right now, any of those RBs would be an upgrade, but I'm sure they think it's just way too early to give up a draft pick or a pass rusher. We haven't even determined which pass rushers are for real yet.

Do any of those guys beat out the guys we have???
Probably not just more depth. If we’re going to cut sanders then just use Luepke as the 4th back or sign Malik Davis. If you trade it’s gotta be for a game changer starter like Breece Hall

I want blue to play too, but if he's not ready then he's more of a liability than anything. We can't just go off his speed
No he wouldn't I literally know for sure that his ankle and foot were never healed right they tried to put him in that preseason game he reinjured it and I'm guaranteeing his statements are more about consistency in practice because he's not been available...

You want to give the reps to the guys who are available in practice you have to show in practice so I'm assuming he'll get that this week and then maybe that tone changes...

It's a liability because you say he is but he's not where where is the liability he had a great pass block in his only game and even with a bad line he moved well and ran well and I know it's preseason but that's all we got to see but I saw him practice he was beating people all the time he looked like our best runner in training camp just from the outside.

Tony Pollard was also considered a liability in the past protection but they gave him a shot he learned on the fly and sometimes you just have to do that And in this case we need somebody with juice and we have it You either need to bring up Blue or Malik Davis both of them are faster than Sanders..

I'm not saying you don't bring Sanders up but I'm tired of hearing how well he would have played it if he wasn't a liability no he has an injured ankle so you show me when he's 100 percent like true 100% back from the injury and he's not playing then we can talk...

The fans will never know and neither will the coaches if they just assume he needs to do it better in practice when a lot of guys are gamers like we saw in the preseason game he literally stonewalled the guy in pass protection Well that means he has the ability to do so he just needs to now work on his craft in real games...

The fact is there were guys that didn't play well in the first game they're not going to get cut or benched why do we have to wait on blue let them come in and learn on the fly.

This is just for juice I like Williams and I'm ready for Moffat to get back here so we can get rid of Sanders but Blue is one of the only players we have on this team that has that kind of game changing ability and we need him on the field..

I know what you're hearing from the coach but sometimes that's just coach speak they're trying to get a message to the player that they want to see him ramp it up in practice and not use the ankle as an excuse.....

But you don't go outside that's my opinion we don't need to go outside the star to get players we have some if they want to see it then get Malik Davis why wouldn't he be good enough if we haven't seen him in a real game but you gotta play players in real games in order to see what they can do behind a starting offensive line when they're using a game plan..

So this is going to be interesting week to week but you asked a question and I'm telling you that I don't think those guys are guaranteed you go make a move that they're going to be any better than what we have..

because we have not even FULLY seen what we have... The trade deadline is a ways off so let's see how this works out..

Not worth it to lose in the wildcard round. Embrace the rebuild and keep your assets.
:hammer:I agree or you wait about three more weeks use the players we have to bring up like Blue Mafa and Malik Davis and give them a workout let them get in games and actually prove themselves and then if there's still a giant need then yes if your team is still in the race at that point then you can go get a guy I will Rubber stamp that kind of move but right now it's an overreaction..

Mafah is a jag until he gets his big body moving and you have a 235 pound guy running at you.

He impressed in the Pre-season.

Blue & Mafah need work before you start trading picks. We need our picks.

If you’re going to make trades go get defenders.
