Throwing the Deep Ball

Why is it that when opposing teams run deep routes and heave the ball they either A) complete the pass for a big gain or B) become the beneficiaries of a PI penalty? Meanwhile those two outcomes rarely happen for the Cowboys. We don't seem to throw deep that often. Why not? I mean, shoot, in today's NFL it seems that the receiver will either catch it or get the PI call.

Any opinions on this?

Romo seems to throw the ball out of bounds instead of giving his receiver a chance to make an adjustment and either catch the ball or draw a PI.

He does that so it doesn't get picked off.

Romo seemed a bit off in the 1st quarter yesterday, before warming up and paying very well later. That happens. So we did go deep 3-4 times in the 1st half yesterday, but it failed. Now we also beat SF on a similar route earlier this season.

We are vertically challenged in this regard...

This is just my opinion. I think that what we saw yesterday is Robinson get a little dinged up early. I think we saw Dez up against a player that was probably faster then he is and every bit as strong. This is why it's extremely important for Dez to learn to be the best possible route runner he can be. He can beat anybody, including Peterson, if he learns this skill. Yesterday, his bread and butter, the deep jump ball or fly did not work. 98% of the players he plays against he can beat. Peterson is not one of those guys. I think we saw why we miss Miles. If he's on the field, Arizona can't match up. This is a situation that will get better in good time.

I agree with this all the way around.

Exactly. If his receiver can't catch it, it's best that it goes out of bounds, than in bounds to be picked off.

Exactly.....

Also..other players, not named Ball, or Newman turn their head.....

You gotta give credit to Peterson. He's obviously had an spectacular season as a returner, but he's struggled at times in coverage. While he didn't do anything at all in the return game he made up for it by playing great in coverage. He's gonna be special.

Patrick Peterson gave up some plays but overall played like a true top 5 pick!

He played about as good as you can play Dez 1 on 1 but Dez still lit him up pretty good.

His batted pass down the sideline was the play of the game for me.

When Dez is on his game he'll light up anybody. We saw in the first game of the season against the Jets he was lighting up the best DB in the game Darrel Revis and then he got injured.

I heard discussions on the radio leading up to the game saying that if not (BIG "IF NOT") for his return skills, he would have been a huge bust as a corner.
He has struggled a ton in coverage this year, but that was way over the top, imo.

He does have a much tougher time covering guys who can run a route, vs guys who just overpower people athletically...because he can match athletically with anyone.

Yesterday, he looked ike a real player to me with plenty of upside.

Yes I noticed he was off also. But overall he played well.
Not his fault WR's don't get open. Unlike our secondary letting guys open all the time...

Romo threw two fo them and they where terrible throws and I mean flat out terrible throws. The WR never had a chance they where so far out of bounds the other ones he sometimes tends to throw them short see last weeks game.

I wonder if Romo is just not that good at them. I am not saying he can not hit the deep outs or something down field but there seems to be a limit somewhere
