Ok. I have some free time here at work. I am going to do what I think would be best for this team long term and help us get into contention this year.

Obviously this is just my opinion and it may differ from many other ones here.

Without further ado. Here I go

Re-Signings
Martin-Feel we work out a long term deal with him.
LP-Give him a deal to retire a Cowboy
Loney-Good vet backup
2nd round tender on Irving

Restructures
Frederick
Dez gets and extension that drops his cap hit

Cuts
Scandrick
Mayowa-already released
Hanna-Pending release
Beasely- Something tells me he is done here.

Trades pre draft
I really think we are going after ET. I don't know why. I just have this feeling. Its one of those things that is just too easy for us too pull off and Stephen needs to wake up and bite the bullet.

We send Seattle our 3rd round pick and a 4th this year(comp pick) and a conditional 2nd round pick next year if we win the Super bowl. Otherwise it stays a third.

This gives us our Safety we have needed and a vet presence in the locker room and a great teacher for our young defensive backs. This is also contingent on him re-signing here prior to the trade.

Free Agency
Sheldon Richardson DT-Only if it is on a one year prove it deal. We have had prior interest and it just makes sense.
Derrick Johnson LB-Don't think he is looking for a payday as much as winning a title. Great vet to bring in at a modest cost
Matt Slauson G-Another vet who can solidify the left side of the line.
William Beatty OT-Insurance for Tyron

Now the Draft

19: R1P19
WR D.J. MOORE
MARYLAND
Steps in immediately and knocks Twill down to the number 3 spot. Kid is a playmaker and everything this offseason so far has me thinking we go WR in the first if we don't trade up for Derwin James. This kid can do it all. Hes big hes strong hes fast and uses his hands to catch the ball. Immediately injects speed and talent on the offensive side of the ball.

50: R2P18
DL DA'SHAWN HAND
ALABAMA
Comes in and gives us a one tech who is good at stuffing the run

116: R4P16
LB FRED WARNER
BRIGHAM YOUNG
Great player and good value here. Comes in and learns from Lee and can help out if ok ok WHEN he goes down.

171: R5P34
G WILL CLAPP
LSU
Some insurance for the G position.

173: R5P36
WR ALLEN LAZARD
IOWA STATE
Takes Brice Butlers spot and is a much better red zone weapon. I would love to see a set with Dez, Moore, Lazard and Witten with Zeke behind the line. Who would you defend? Really?

193: R6P19
OT GREG SENAT
WAGNER
Young player who can be coached up by Alexander. The coach not @Alexander

208: R6P34
LB TEGRAY SCALES
INDIANA
Incredible instincts. Chances are hes gone here but if not. Great value

236: R7P18
CB RASHAAN GAULDEN
TENNESSEE

Depth for practice squad.

Earl Thomas has 1 year remaining on his contract and his 2018 salary is over 10M.

They won't be giving up a 3rd, a 4th and a conditional 2nd for him.

I don't know if they would pay him if no draft picks were involved.

The point was we should be doing something. Its not like we every use our second round picks for anything other than risks regardless.

Rather re-sign Copper than Matt Slauson. Josh Kline would be a good upgrade, though, if he hits FA.

Also, I would pursue Preston Brown rather than Derrick Johnson--he's about 10 years younger and probably cheaper.

Fred Warner and Allan Lazard made money at the combine they used to be available in those rounds but now they will most likely be taken a round above where you got them in this mock. Warner in the 3rd and Lazard in the 4th. Gaulden had a lot of hype going into the combine but tested like crap. He only falls to the third or early fourth round though not the seventh. I like how you did FA, a bit rich for the cap he have available but all in all it would make it easier to fix the team in the draft and that's what you want. I really hope the seachickens let Thomas walk.

It just seems like there will be no player that the FO loves at 19, but about 4 or 5 players they will like (Isiah Wynn, Will Hernandez, Vander Esch, Rashann Evans, Payne, Taevan Bryan, DJ Moore) and fulfill a need from the get-go.

I'd really like to see a trade back this draft and pick up more ammunition in round 3. Hopefully a QB drops and a team like the Steelers, Saints, or Patriots move up to get a QB for the future.

Only player that I would love at 19 that might fall is Derwin James or Calvin Ridley.

Earl Thomas (slightly overpaid for him) and DJ Moore? The rest of the free agents signings and draft is hot garbage but again, Earl Thomas and DJ Moore?

There occasions to make a go-for-it move but this year for the Cowboys does not seem like that situation.

In general good teams either use significant cap space or drafts picks to acquire players but not both.

Draft picks are cap management tools.

ET will want a big contract but he'll 29 when the 1 remaining year on his contract is up. A 4 year contract puts him at 33 for the final year. If you look at statistical charts of player declines, most positions on average are starting to decline by the time they're 29 (RBs earlier).

I realize the concept that the Cowboys have not done that great with some 2nd round picks but if they start operating with the the assumption that they'll fail, then it could get ugly.

Somebody posted the last 8 or 10 picks in the 2nd and it's wasn't as bad as it seems.

I do believe that they are operating generally how a team should function. It's not perfect but they do appear to have strategies and do appear to attempt to learn from mistakes they make.

In the past they had no process which meant they couldn't systematically improve the process over time. Jerry just randomly made decisions or had people that made arbitrary decisions. Even Parcells just made picks by the seats of his pants, so to speak.

If ET would agree to a reasonable 3 year contract starting this year prior to a trade, then he would be worth more, but as-is, the Cowboys have to assume that he'll only be here 1 year.

That's way too much for Earl. It's said that Seattle is looking for a 2nd or 3rd. I would offer a 5th and 6th then not call them after. I bet they would jump on it after a few days.

81 is probably as high as we’ll go for a 29 year old safety who’s on the last year of his deal and refusing to play if he doesn’t get extended.

I agree with Moore at 19. If we can’t trade up for Derwin, that’s what I’m doing.
