An interesting update from Tsmith:

“My back is really restricted me a lot,” said Smith, who was still named to the Pro Bowl in 2017, for the fifth straight year. “But it’s feeling really good right now. We did some MRIs and it never was to the point where I needed surgery. I wanted to stay away from surgery. So I’m happy where we are right now.”

The most important to me was that MRI was done - and it was never to the point he needed surgery.
If true, that would be huge.
Though if surgery was not needed, what happened last season after last offseason of rest etc?

Never to the point where it "needed" surgery. That still doesn't give me a lot of confidence because "needed" is defined by a level of disability in people who aren't professional football players. Absent traumatic injury, spinal surgery for professional athletes would pretty much be considered "elective" in the non-athlete population.

Need Smith at full health ready to play all games.

Actually, there are structural issues with the discs and such that define whether surgery is needed. For example a ruptured disc would need surgery whereas a bulging disc can heal.

I read "my back is restricting me a lot" as it still is a problem that's not resolved. Great that it feels really good right now but can it feel good and still be restricting him a lot?

I dont know what the problem is with him but its probably best they find his replacement sooner than later!

Same story as last year.

Wasn't his problem last year more related to knee and groin issues? I could be remembering it wrong.
I think early to start the season those were his excuses to cover for his back issue. But his back was a known problem all last year before the season!

Minimal practice in training camp and maybe parts of two preseason games is prescribed.

Agreed, so it isnt herniated just bulging I suppose. Also, it probably hasnt been to the point where it is likely to herniate otherwise surgery would have been a foregone conclusion.

Glad he got the MRI and it showed he didn't need surgery. We all know that things can change though. Still a lot of unknowns on the O-line. T's back. Where Collins will play. The roll of Flemming. I think we'll have some answers after the draft. If we draft a G high then Collins stays at RT and Flemming is the swing tackle. If we draft a T somewhere then he'll probably compete with Flemming/Green as RT/ST and Collins moves back to guard. Maybe those are wrong assumptions, we'll see

Back problems rarely just go away, he's another year older and plays a physically demanding sport. Plan B needs to be better than last year.

That is why you see him with the massive core structure he has.

That takes away a lot of the pressure on his back.

With discs that are bulging it does not take much of the wrong type of movement to herniate. Not saying it will herniate first time he take a hit but a disc that is bulging at a certain point that material eventually fatigues from bulging and leads to herniation. Now if you can relieve the pressure it also relieves the possibility of fatigue.

We've actually known this for a while.
He needs surgery but doesn't want it.
It's risky to get and he's pushing it off as long as he can.

Bad backs are the worst and he's a stud at 85% so we just gotta cross our fingers.
