I wonder if he dislikes Coughlin then because that's why Barry retired. Well that and his team stank.

why exactly did Barry retire?

I've been watching football since 1992, but I was only 8 years old and too young to understand off-the-field matters such as that

I've never bothered to read up on that story... can anyone give me a quick summary?

I heard somewhere that after you've played your the 10th year in the NFL, your are guaranteed 50% of your salary for the rest of your life (your pension).

Tiki is in his 10th year, so he will be eligible for this maximum benefit, and he supposedly has a great future in television and radio, so he may not think that the grind to his body that the NFL puts on him is worth it anymore.

Here is what I think happened... some will prob disagree...

Barry signed new deal. He was really happy. The Lions promised to build a good team... they didnt really follow through... Barry saw alot of downside in staying... hinted that he wanted out... they said no way.... he retired.

He quit on his team and Emmitt cruised right by him... in yards, TD's, SB's etc...

If Tiki Barber wants to retire, that is his right. Lets not foget that while NFL players do get paid very well, the beating that their body takes DOES wear on them and affect them as they get older.

Barber is still in his prime, but it isn't like he is a spring chicken either, he has been in the league for 10 years now... Maybe he wants to retire white he can still enjoy life later on....

This has nothing to do with Coughlin ..

Tiki has been considering retirement for at least the last two years that I know of because I remember him talking about it back then and last year as well.

Tiki has a lot of business investments waiting on him when he retires not to mention sportscaster deals he is very likely to receive.

You can love playing football but after spending 20-25 of your life playing it, especially in a physically demanding position such as running back, it makes perfect sense to start considering life after football. In Tiki's case, his other options are just as if not more lucrative than his football contract and more importantly, those other options don't have the same physical and mental requirements

Exactly!

2-3 years ago is when the team complained about him and then Tiki complained about coughlin.. thanks for making my point

If you were capable of reading the entire post you would see he didn't make your point. The "Tiki may retire" story may be beyond your ability to understand.

He's just found another way to get NY media attention centered on him..imo.

In NY, the press attention swings between two teams, and altho the Jets are most always in the shadows (not just as NY's "second" team, but because Barber, Manning, Strahan and Shockey are literally everywhere with their tv and radio shows, and newspaper columns), the new Jets coach has garnered a LOT of press. Mangini is the new press darling in NY.

I have no doubt Tiki has considered retirement (wonder what Bill thinks regarding his high estimation of Barber...he's often mentioned that once a player even ponders retirement, for all intents and purposes, he HAS retired), but I'm more convinced observing Brett Favre's ongoing act eaten up by the gullible press alerted Tiki to the spotlight 'potential'.

Limelight hogs, the Jints are crawling with 'em. And on a week that NY faces Dallas, with its incomparable media magnet, I'm not surprised that Barber tried to steal a little of the attention.

Barf.

tiki has lots of options off the field, and will have a big career in the media.i think the fact that his team is far from being a super bowl threat factors in to his decision, maybe even a little to do with tom. but i think the main reason is he has a chance to have a good career in tv and these oppotunities don't come by everyday so he plans to take it.i would'nt call someone a quitter for getting out in his prime.funny how some would call these two(sanders, tiki) quitters but complain that favre has stayed too long

I saw a short blurb on TV about Tiki talking about retirement. They showed a player (maybe Richard Dent, Chicago ?) who could barley walk down the stairs in a clip. Tiki said he has to think about that when considering retirement.

He also talked about physics, said that RB is about knowing angles and how not to take a lot of direct shots, sounded a lot like what BP was talking about with JJ also.

Your sure it wasn't Jerome Bettis? I saw some clip were Bettis could barley make it down his stairs without constanly catching himself on the handrail.

I actually applaud a player who is thinking about his life outside of football. It's hard for most players to walk away on top of there game and millions coming in.

It very well might have been Bettis, now that you mention it.

What does an extra 5 million mean if you can barley walk later in life.

It was most likely Earl Campbell. The guy can barely walk and suffers constant daily pain ever since he retired.

Maybe Tiki saw a re-run of the interview with Earl Campbell on his ranch. Looks 100 yrs old and literally can't move. 10 yrs of car crashes every Sunday, plenty of cash in the bank, and unlimited non-football opportunities = smart move.
