This is the first I've heard of this; it kind of flew under the radar. Good move by the Spurs.

Duncan will take less than maximum salary

By Johnny Ludden, Yahoo! Sports
October 29, 2007

With NBA commissioner David Stern set to present Tim Duncan his fourth championship ring on Tuesday, the San Antonio Spurs forward has made it clear he has no plans to leave the court – or San Antonio – anytime soon.

Duncan has reached agreement with the Spurs on a two-year, $40 million extension that figures to give the team enough salary-cap flexibility to continue to surround him with a competitive support cast in the waning seasons of his career, two sources with knowledge of the deal said Monday.

By signing the extension, which is expected to be finalized within the next few days, Duncan forfeits his option to become a free agent after this season. He will be under contract with the Spurs until the summer of 2012.

The extension doesn't come as a surprise. Duncan, 31, said prior to last season's NBA Finals he felt as healthy as he has been in years and hoped to continue playing "as long as I can."

But what is notable about the deal are the terms: Although Duncan is eligible to receive a two-year extension worth about $51 million under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, he agreed to nearly $11 million less because it could afford the Spurs greater flexibility to pursue free agents after the 2009-10 season.

Duncan and his agent, Lon Babby, met with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford at Popovich's house prior to the start of training camp. Well aware of Duncan's value to the franchise – the Spurs likely would not be in San Antonio had he not guided them to their first title in 1999 – Popovich and Buford presented him with a maximum offer during the meeting. But they also made a detailed presentation of their plans for the team's long-term future and showed Duncan the possible impact of his accepting a lesser extension.

After a few weeks of deliberation, Duncan agreed to the $40 million extension. He will make $22.2 million in the final year of his current contract, with his salary dropping to about $18.7 million in the first year of the extension.

Duncan will be 34 when the extension begins. Tony Parker is the only other player currently scheduled to be under contract following the 2009-10 season, but the Spurs also will be in position to re-sign their third star, Manu Ginobili, that summer if they want.

The Spurs also are expected to eventually extend Popovich's contract to coincide with that of Duncan's.

It's been a great week for the Spurs... not only did we extend Duncan, but apparently we unloaded Beno Udrih to the T-Wolves for a 2nd round pick!

Seriously? There is no excuse for anyone not having a job as long as Kevin McHale has one.

I also think it's a smart move by Duncan. NBA big men are notorious for their decline in production after the age of 30 (see Shaq), and he's now locked up to an average of $20 mil a year through the age of 35 or 36. On the plus side, Tim Duncan should be able to keep his production up much better than Shaq since he actually makes an effort to stay in shape.

I just absolutely love the fact that this guy will end up playing his entire career for one team. It's such an "old school" thing to do... it fits Timmy to a T.

As for Beno... yes it's serious. He's a guy that the front office, the coach, and most fans would have unloaded for a free Taco Bell taco.

I guess the Wolves have to pay his $1.75 million salary as well? Too good to be true!

The sad thing is that we got more for him than we did for Scola. :(

It's good to see some consistency in sports.

And hey, at least you got something in return. That's not anywhere close to being as bad as our team paying mucho $$$ for a player on a division rival's roster (i.e. Michael Finley).

Beno and cash were traded to the TPups for a conditional 2008 2nd round pick.

The Spurs will never, ever see this draft pick. This was merely a move to free up cap space, as well as drop some dead weight off the roster. Beno had completely worn out his welcome. He got his rings, now he can move on.

On a side note, shortly after the TPups traded for him, they cut him. Beno is now free to sign with any NBA team, or simply go back to Europe and sign with a team.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all that I read about Darius Washington, and I am happy he took Beno's place. Tonight was my first chance to see him, and he didn't disappoint. I think we have our backup PG for the future. BTW, in true Spurs fashion, he missed his FTs tonight..........gotta love it.

except he can't make his FTs........and I wouldn't mind if he had Bruce Bowen # of attempts, but he is near the top of the league. So if he shoots like 400 FTs, he is missing around 150 of them. Those 150 pts are costly. He isn't the only one though. If the Spurs, as a team shot 75-78% from the line, they would win 63-67 games a year......they lose about 5-8 games a year cause of poor FT shooting.

Anyway, I am glad for one thing. That Timmy's only flaw seems to be at the FT Line....He is such a great player and great person in our community.

Hey, there are worse flaws in an athlete. And as you said, if they made FT at the percentage a team like the Mavs or Suns do they would be almost unbeatable. I guess everyone has a kryptonite.

we basically paid the t wolves money to take beno, we didnt really get anything in return expect for a little bit of cap space. but in the bigger scheme of things we can resign marcus williams and send him to austin and now we get to get a longer look at darius washington. as for signing duncan........
