Time to base the offense out of 3 wide sets

We have the bye week, we know our starting 3 WR's can make plays and Witten is hobbled.

Dez still has some things to work out with our playbook and that's why he's not being incorporated as much as you would think early on. But once again, that's what 2 weeks of practice before a game is for.

Time to go 3 wide sets more often. Mix in some single back, double RB and 2 TE sets but I think our WR's are the strength of this offense and we can use that to spread out defenses.

Spreading out the oppositions defense helps the run, and keeps some more pressure off of our QB.

I'd love to see more 3 wide and the I formation with Witten split out in the slot.

Spread it out and get Felix some carries.

Roy has one good game and you are ready to crown him as the second coming of Terry Glenn. Why don't you let him perform at a high level for a few consecutive games first?

That's exactly how it would benefit the running game and exactly the back to use it with.

The problem with our running game is the opposition see's MBIII out there and they force him to run side to side because they know he's a better inside runner.

When Felix is in there they force him to run into the middle knowing he's better in outside and in space.

With a 3 wide set though Felix's blocking is going to have to be solid otherwise they know we're running if he's out there and passing when Marion is out there.

1 thing for sure is it will loosen up the box in the middle a bit for Marion so he can drive up the middle more often as he used to.

Barber is not a better inside runner. He always got his biggest runs when bounced out side and either run over people or broke tackles.

I think Roy has been playing very good football this year, have you been watching? 3 WR sets are deadly when you have Austin, Williams and Bryant.

The only person mentioning anything to do with crowning RW11 and Terry Glenn is you my friend.

This is not based off of 1 good performance from RW11. This is based off many factors.

1. We need an offensive identity and that identity should mostly involve where our talent lies offensively.

2. Offensively our talent lies mostly in the passing game. More specifically our QB and 3 starting WR's sprinkled in with Jason Witten and our 2 polar opposite starting RB's.

3. Most teams don't have the type of secondary help to match up against 3 WR's who are all at least 6'2", 215 lbs and can all go up and get the ball like ours can. Nor do they usually have 3 corners that are at least equally as talented as our 3 starting WR's.

4. Also spreading out opposing defenses because we use more of a 3 wide base offense is more likely than a 2 TE or 2 RB set. As mentioned previously in my OP, this will loosen up the box inside and outside for runs.

It will keep teams from blitzing our QB as much and also disguise whether we will run or pass with our 2 polar opposite RB's more often than what we are currently experiencing.

5. The money spent on offense is in the WR position. Not to mention this years 1st rounder and a 1st and 3rd for Roy. So that`s where our draft picks have been invested as well.

So other than a false crowning and bringing up the next so called "coming of Terry Glenn"yourself. Is there any other rational you may have to add to this thread that a 3 wide base offense is not the direction we should go offensively?

maybe he's worried that Roy's streak will "fade"?

Sorry, couldn't help it, lol.

Well, I will agree with you on 1 of two points regarding Barber in your post. I don't agree that he's a better outside runner than inside. Barber's running strength is definitely better running down hill and between the tackles as opposed to outside of the tackles. This is because of his bruising style and his lack of a 2nd gear.

Those yards are very important on 3rd and 3's, 2nd and 7's to get those 3 or 4 yards which he used to be very good at doing, especially in the red zone.

That is changing for him because teams are forcing him to run outside the tackles by clogging the interior or suffer running into a pile as opposed to beating them off the tackle/corners.

However, I do agree that his most successful runs have come from outside because if he is able to beat you off the corner, like any other RB in the league, the yards gained are going to be much larger than what a back would usually gain inside. Plus he's gonna get to run over some corners.

See with a back like Barber, he has to beat you up inside so you are forced to fill the middle more. Once that happens, then he has to get to the outside and unfortunately safeties and LB's are getting there when necessary without much extra help.

Absolutely you would like to get him out where the corners are and ding them up but he's not getting there like he once did in the past whether he trimmed down a bit this year or not.

** Also wanted to say that I have read a lot of your general posts in threads and I find you very knowledgeable.

lol!, No problem, like the white end of your statement. Hidden. Sort of :p:.

Anyways, going by Roy's history since he has been here I don't blame him if he thinks Roy will have an off game or 2.

Not so sure we can even say Roy has had a streak. But he has basicallt caught anything thrown his way these first 3 games. Some real tough catches up the middle at times I may add.

But you brought the guy here and soaked in all these resources, not to mention you have a very accurate QB. You might as well use him and the other 2 well paid WR's.

They're talent wise our strength and resource wise our largest offensive investment.

Not to mention, it's the best thing for the offense, Romo and is a wrinkle that can help disguise our running game.

Teams know what to do when we run now because Felix has the speed to burn you on the outside and Barber should be able to grind you out inside.

So they force them to do the opposite, thus the lack of yardage and big plays in the running game.

Basically both of our backs are forced to play to their weakness' constantly.

Try two good games and one outstanding game. I've been as critical as anyone on Roy since the GB game last year. That was it for me.

But I'm not seeing any of the **** that pissed me off so badly last season.

He looks quick and fast. More so than in the past and especially for a guy his size.

That first TD was outstanding. Very smooth, just plucked out of the air with confidence. And on the 2nd TD, he really turned on the jets and showed me a little burst.

Here's the most important thing as I see it. For all his faults last year, he did offer us a real nice red zone threat. He made plays there for us.

And we're going to need every receiving red zone threat we have if our run game doesn't improve.

I always seem to see things very similar to you Sonny.

Regarding the bolded area I always felt we didn't go to him enough in the red zone when he clearly was and is 1 of our 2 best options.

He was always able to go up and get the ball. We just never utilized him there.

I also always believed that yes he did have his part in the on field mis-communication with Romo but I also think some of that was on Romo as well.

Roy, while making a kings randsom and not having the stats to justify it, certainly has been humble throughout this whole issue and made it clear he is willing to do whatever it takes to be on the same page as #9.

Regardless, these guys are getting one another finally and starting to show trust as teammates. Hope it keeps up because we are starting to see the rewards of a hard working Roy Williams that is being properly utilized!

The thing about Barber though is he always gets something.

Where Felix may dance around and not get up field, Barber may get 2 yards and make it 2nd and 8.

I just see sooooo many advantages to having Gronkowski and Bennett out of the game and spreading teams out. Especially in the playaction game.

I'm just amazed out how Roy is suddenly regarded as a good wide receiver because of one great game and a couple of decent ones. It was only a few weeks ago that Michael Irvin said playing with Roy was like playing 10 against 11. Maybe Roy will keep it going when he's not playing man-on-man against a rookie. We'll see.

I think he's always been at the very least "good".

He just has never once lived up to a 1st, 3rd, and 9 mill a year.

This team loves the two TE set... I don't see that changing this season.

Me either but if im an opposing D coordinator the formations that would scare me the most would involve our 3 WR's plus Felix and Witten. Especially if Dallas could establish a run game out of it.

In reality, we have so many weapons that every play of every series should be like opening a new toy.

The talent is that good.

Guys, we've had one good offensive week preceded by two weeks where we couldn't get in the end zone, preceded by the entire 2009 season where we had red zone trouble. Perhaps we should work on what got us the success Sunday rather than move on to something else.

I think we have too much talent on offense.

I think there are "worries" about evening out the touches rather than getting the ball to the very best playmakers most of the time... I'll let others debate who those 3 players are.
