Jimmy Johnson sums up 1990s Cowboys mindset: 'We're gonna kick their <expletive> because we're better'​

Jimmy Johnson's post-college plan to become an industrial psychologist didn't come to fruition. Johnson did, however, put his psychology degree to good use in a coaching career that on Aug. 7 will be immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The first coach to win a college national championship and a Super Bowl title, Johnson was a big believer of the Pygmalion effect, a "psychological phenomenon wherein high expectations lead to improved performance in a given era." Johnson also used the self-fulfilling prophecy, as he often created or predicted big things for his players and teams that more often than not reached fruition.

"Our approach was completely different [than other coaches]," Johnson said during a recent virtual media session. "Our approach was, 'Hey guys, we're gonna kick their <expletive> because we're better than they are.'"

That was then. This is 2023. Different players. Different coaches. It is nice reminiscing how Johnson's strengths helped build a powerhouse in the NFL. Now it is time to see if Dallas can take that final step within a three-decade old parity enforced league.

Rise to the level of this moment, Cowboys. Be excellent.

I really hope Dallas players just don't say a thing this week. Except, give SF respect by saying they are a very good team.
Then go and focus on practice, game film, and study their tendencies, but be prepared for something different as well.

Jimmy very early on probably year 2 was getting us ready for a Primetime game with the Skins. Said that sometimes you just have to punch that gorilla in the mouth. May have been a Monday night game, we did win btw…
