The new team inherits the existing contract.Doesn’t the team that trades for Dak inherit his contract? Obviously , the trade would have to be part of a contract extension.
The years, base salaries, roster bonuses, et all.
Signing bonuses stay with the old team, this is money already paid to the player but allowed to count over multiple years of the contract instead of in one year. Any remaining bonus proration from future seasons accelerates immediately into that year's cap when a player is traded or released (unless it occurs after June 1st).
So, Prescott's 2024 base salary of $29M would go with him (and yes, the new team would want to agree to an extension to lower that number before making the trade), but all of his past signing bonus proration would then come forward on the cap as 'dead money' ($61.915M) and count against the Cowboys' '24 cap.
Dak's current '24 cap number (base salary, roster bonus and yearly bonus proration) of $59.455M would increase to $61.915M (bonus proration slated to count from '24 to '26) as dead money.
But he would then be off the books in 2025.
