Doesn’t the team that trades for Dak inherit his contract? Obviously , the trade would have to be part of a contract extension.
The new team inherits the existing contract.

The years, base salaries, roster bonuses, et all.

Signing bonuses stay with the old team, this is money already paid to the player but allowed to count over multiple years of the contract instead of in one year. Any remaining bonus proration from future seasons accelerates immediately into that year's cap when a player is traded or released (unless it occurs after June 1st).

So, Prescott's 2024 base salary of $29M would go with him (and yes, the new team would want to agree to an extension to lower that number before making the trade), but all of his past signing bonus proration would then come forward on the cap as 'dead money' ($61.915M) and count against the Cowboys' '24 cap.

Dak's current '24 cap number (base salary, roster bonus and yearly bonus proration) of $59.455M would increase to $61.915M (bonus proration slated to count from '24 to '26) as dead money.

But he would then be off the books in 2025.

You need an idiot to do to do that

Cowboys have to extend Dak Prescott or fail to sign other key players to long-term contracts

The Cowboys will probably look to sign Dak to another extension prior to the start of the season. The extension will free an estimated $26.2 million for the team to use on other contracts for crucial players. The extension of Dak’s contract is the key to all the other players like CeeDee Lamb, DaRon Bland and Micah Parsons future contracts. Or if they look to retain a number of players on expired contracts this upcoming season, Dak’s extension becomes even more vital.

If we had a competent G.M.
I move them for picks /and or players .. The cap room you save can be spent in free agency ,on holes along the D-line ( Chris Jones?? And and run stuffer) The O - line, (Tackle ,center and gaurd ) Move on from Tyron , and now you've got picks and cap room to get a Q.B ,a running back and draft a stud left tackle .
We just need a bus driver.. Paying ak like a top 5 franchise QQ.B. and not winning is just too crippling to the franchise ,you could spend less and have the same result..
Could plug alot of holes and become a more rounded team . Much tougher to beat..
The old wild catter has catted out so no way this happens.

I think you’re correct and other teams have shown it is the way to do it too. But, it probably won’t happen here lol

Besides Parsons, you probably can’t trade the other two. We know Dak cannot be traded; and I wouldn’t be surprised if, after all these years of success if Zach is protected.
