Safeties and OL signings that happen now are just like RB and WR signings — they are only about practice and preseason. Mostly scrubs or bad fits are available. Even Iloka....contrary to what some said about the guy, it’s clear from front office comments that we viewed him as only a LB/in the box type safety without versatility, meaning coverage skills. Centers? Guards? OTs? Nope....just enough to get through preseason.
Any trades or FA signings worth a damn to help our depth or injury situations will come as preseason cuts are made. Lots of centers, OTs, and safeties were drafted. Those who show they are ready to play will cause teams to cut or trade players they don’t want to overpay as backups.
Maybe Martin plays in game one. Maybe the safety situations works itself out. Maybe Frederick, who already feels stronger after treatment, doesn’t miss significant time. But if the Cowboys don’t like their chances, there will be plenty of stop-gap players coming available in the coming weeks to improve our depth, and luckily, we have the cap room to make something happen. Patience is the key right now, not expecting available signings now to actually help us in September.
