Pro Timing Day workout could push Hurricanes’ Sam Shields into NFL Draft
by Jorge Milian
Could Sam Shields be this year’s version of Spencer Adkins in the NFL Draft?

Adkins, a linebacker, started only five games at UM and barely made an impact for the Hurricanes but managed to get himself drafted in the sixth round by the Atlanta Falcons after an off-the-charts performance during Miami’s Pro Timing Day a year ago.

Sam Shields ran blazing 40-yard dash times at Pro Timing Day. (Miami Herald)

Adkins ran 40 yards in 4.43 seconds, broad jumped 10-feet, 2 inches, vertical jumped 36 feet, 1/2 inches and bench pressed 225 pounds a total of 30 times.

Now there is Sam Shields, who registered the best numbers overall during UM’s Pro Timing Day last Friday. According to NFL.com’s Gil Brandt, Shields “worked his way into draft consideration” by running the 40-yard dash in 4.30 and 4.33 seconds and also adding a 39-inch vertical jump and doing 15 bench press reps of 225 pounds despite weighing in at only 190 pounds.

Shields had a checkered career at UM. He played receiver his first three seasons, but never matched the potential he showed as a freshman when he caught 37 passes for 501 yards and 4 touchdowns. Off-the-field issues that resulted in multiple suspensions had many wondering if the Sarasota native would even finish his career in a Hurricanes’ uniform.

Prior to his senior season, Shields was moved to cornerback where he started 10 games last season. Shields started 10 games, but didn’t have any interceptions and his two pass breakups came in a rout of Division I-AA Florida A&M. His most important contributions came on special teams, where he served as the team’s gunner on punt coverage.

While his production at Miami was inconsistent at best, there was never a question about Shields’ athletic ability. He proved that last Friday with numbers that could get him selected at the back end of the draft. Whether Shields’ arrest two weeks ago for marijuana possession is a factor in his draftability remains an open question.

Couple other notes:

….According to Brandt, Jason Fox ran the 40-yard dash in 5.45 seconds in his first attempt last Friday. The 6-foot-7, 305-pound offensive tackle injured his left hamstring during his second 40-yard dash and was unable to continue. If Fox is unable to work out for NFL teams in the next couple of weeks, his draft stock could plummet. He’s probably no better than a fourth-round pick as of right now.

….Tight end Jimmy Graham, who weighs 262 pounds, did 15 bench press reps of 225 pounds, the same as the 190-pound Shields.

….According to Brandt, only 20 NFL teams were represented at UM’s Pro Timing Day. UM officials proclaimed after the workout that each of the 32 NFL teams was in attendance.

….SI.com’s Tony Pauline predicts three UM players will be taken during the draft with Jimmy Graham going first, possibly in the second round.

….Javarris James ran the 40-yard dash last Friday in 4.59 and 4.63 seconds, pedestrian times for a running back. With his history of injuries, James is unlikely to be drafted.

Fox pulled a hammy, but he seems to have more than his share of injuries. He has a heart condition too, doesnt he?

I would take him in the 4th

03/27/2010 - Jason Fox hoped to prove at the University of Miami's Pro Timing Day on Friday that his surgically-repaired right knee was fully healed. As it turned out, Fox's left knee was fine. It was his left hamstring that was the problem. Fox, a 6-foot-7, 314-pound offensive tackle, went down in a heap while running the 40-yard dash before a group of scouts representing all 32 NFL teams. Fox clutched his leg before he got up, then received help from UM's training staff. He was unable to continue. The exact nature of the injury was not disclosed. Fox declined to speak with reporters and did not respond to messages left on his cell phone. If nothing else, the hamstring injury cost Fox another chance to improve his draft status. He was unable to participate in most drills at the NFL Scouting Combine in February as he recovered from knee surgery in early December. The recent injury bug is in contrast to Fox's tenure at UM, where he was an iron man. He started 47 games, the third-most in school history, while playing in what he has described as "unbearable" knee pain. A first-team All-ACC selection, he played for the last time in a 34-16 victory against Duke on Nov. 21. He missed the regular-season finale against South Florida and the Champs Sports Bowl against Wisconsin. "It's been a difficult road for him," said center A.J. Trump, one of a dozen UM players to audition on Friday. "He gave his heart and soul to this team and now he's kind of playing the price for it. But he'll bounce back."

03/26/2010 - TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT OFFENSIVE TACKLES: Jason Fox, Miami (Fla.), 6-7, 303, 3: It might be hard to imagine a Hurricanes player with 47 starts as a sleeper. But in a class full of outstanding offensive linemen, Fox might get that tag after missing the final two games of a solid college career. First, he missed a game in November against South Florida with what was called an irregular heartbeat, and he had surgery on his left knee in December and was unable to play in the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 29 or work out at the combine in February. He is expected to perform for scouts at Miami's pro day March 26. He ended his days at Miami on the sideline after being previously known as an ironman for his ability to stay on the field despite injuries, including a severely sprained ankle and a dislocated elbow. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY

I would bring Shields in as a undrafted free agent. He's a hell of a special teamer, returning kicks and punts, as well as being a superb gunner. Throw him in there with Calvin Hill to get his head on right.

Fox is a player....could care less about his combine or pro day disappointments.

I would take Shields as an UDFA. I've followed his career since he was a freshman. They just recently switched him to DB from receiver.

With his athletic ability it would be worth see'ing if our staff could turn him into a player.

I doubt Fox goes nearly as high as he has been projected up through this point (second round).

He reminds me a lot of Doug Free to be honest. He was very much the same way, considered a second round type but lasted until the fourth round because of a stress fracture in his foot that hampered him his senior year.

I like Fox, but these injuries are starting to bother me. I'm glad he's trying to gut it out, but sometimes no news is good news.
