Earlier this week, in a post on free agent targets, I referred to a free agent piece written by Grantland’s Bill Barnwell. In that article, Barnwell warned of signing free agent wide receivers who were the second or third option in an efficient passing attack. He aptly called it the Alvin Harper rule. While I can’t argue with Barnwell’s reasoning, I still hold no negative feelings towards Alvin Harper. I’m sure if I were a Bucs fan, I would feel differently, but when I think of Harper I’m instantly reminded of two things. The first memory that comes to mind is Harper dunking over the goal post in Super Bowl XXVII. The second, and most fond memory I have of Harper, is the slant pass he caught from Aikman in the 1992 NFC Championship.

Walk up to most Cowboys’ fans and say, “Aikman to Harper”, and they will know exactly what you’re talking about. Obviously, the play was the proverbial nail in the coffin in that game, but it meant more than that. For an entire generation of Cowboys’ fans it was a defining moment.

the second play that comes to my mind when " Aikman to Harper " is mentioned happened on that game too. It was the acrobatic catch AH made over Eric Davis. One of the best catches I've ever seen.

AH would drop routine passes, but he'd make some of the " what was that ? " catches that more than made up for those drops. Not only did he do it with Troy, but with Bernie Kosar, in the NFC championship game, against this same Niners a year later.

Dang, did they measure verticals back then?? His heads almost touching the goalpost in that pic.

I always think of that 94 yard TD against the Packers in the playoffs as well.

That was the Jimmy guarantee game. I used to love it when Jimmy would get all cocky. When that happened, you knew someone was in for a beating.

Thats the exact way I always describe him. I think he's the only Cowboy that I didn't like from those SB days.

Jimmy used to mess with him and call him "Fri-light" cause he always made his "highlight" catches on Friday practices...lol

No, that was the following year (the re-match at Texas Stadium).

That post that he caught against the Niners in the 1992 NFC Championship game is to this day one of my all time favorite Brad Sham calls.

He was the SEC high jump champion at Tennessee.

For some reason, Harper was one of my favorite players on those teams. Loved the way he always extended his arms and caught the ball with his hands, especially on those little hook routes where Aikman was so deadly.

Ok fellas, who would you rather have... Alvin Harper or Roy Williams?

Yeah, that's what we were talking about. Same game Troy was knocked out and Bernie threw a TD to Harper.

I thought Harper would drop easy passes but Roy took that to a whole new level.

Kosar (a back-up) throws to Alvin Harper who catches the ball and goes 44 yards for a TD to win the NFC Championship game.

VS

Stephen McGee (a back-up) throws to Roy Williams for the game winning TD and Roy *******ly fumbles the ball away to seal a defeat.

Very close call who is better.

OH YA! That highlight should not be shown without Brad's call......"Harper breaking away, Harper at midfield......"

That entire 2nd half was my most significant football viewing experience.

I think that was my 15th season following the Cowboys and about 18 more have passed since. I have no idea how many more seasons I'll get to enjoy, but I know nothing will ever top that game for me.

Fixed it for you. And to be fair it didn't seal defeat, we had the lead, but our defense was terrible.

I love how Micael switched sides with him since he thought the play was suppossed to go that direction...troy read it, alvin read it, and troy just threw...thankfully alvin and he were on the same page.
