TLH: Is Will Sutton A Better Value Than Aaron Donald?

That’s a pretty bold question. Aaron Donald is considered a can’t miss prospect who looks like he is a lock to go in the top 15 of the NFL Draft. Will Sutton on the other hand, has had his draft day value fluctuate between late in the first to possibly a day three pick. If you were just watching Will Sutton’s 2012 tape, we would be arguing right now about who is better prospect; Aaron Donald or Will Sutton?

But after Arizona State asked Sutton to gain weight in 2013 which resulted in a sub-par year, Sutton made matters worse with a poor showing at the NFL Combine. Sutton currently weighs about 285 pounds, which was his playing weight in 2012, but what do you do with this player? His 2012 tape was so much different than 2013 that you feel like you are watching a totally different player. Where do you draft Sutton? What position suites him best in the NFL? What player are you drafting? These are all questions that NFL teams must ask themselves. The question I am asking today is this: Would you rather have Aaron Donald in the top 15 or Will Sutton in the 2nd or 3rd round?

I like Sutton but Donald is the better player without question IMO

The problem is... You can probably get Sutton if you want o bad enough without trading up, you might have to take him higher than you want but would not have to trade up to get him. On the other side it is a pretty good chance you can not get Donald unless you trade up.

If you have a choice between the two without trading up... You take Donald and don't look back. If you can not get him you can get Sutton.

I respectively disagree. I think Sutton has much stronger hands and when he is in shape, he is a much more explosive player.
It is really difficult for short players that have really short arms unless they're freaks and Sutton is not a freak.

Donald, although his arms are longer still doesn't have great arm length and he is short; however, he is freakishly quick and strong.

Sutton might be a little better than Nevis, but I think he will be a rotation player that most coaches will want to make a backup.

I think it's really hard to know how athletic Sutton truly is. Off of his 2012 tape, he looked like a terrific athlete. In 2013, not so much.

Not to mention Sutton (20.5) had twice as many sacks as Nevis (10) had in college...

Stephen Jones mentioned in an interview yesterday that they are really looking for a DT that can play both the 1 and 3 techniques. There aren't too many DT in this draft that could do that better than Sutton.

Have you watched Drake Nevis college tape? He was really good in college.

He weighed 303 at the combine, that he had months to prepare for, and tested horribly as an athlete still. How much lower of weight do you expect him to play at? Is losing another 7-10 pounds going to help him that much?

Can you say Jernigan ... and don't even try and tell me that Sutton is better because he's not.

The Cowboys seem to have plenty of questions about whether Jernigan can play the 3 technique. Stephen Jones basically said this yesterday.

Yes but he is a 1 tech that can play 3, especially with some coaching. He is really strong and also quick for a big guy. At FSU he wasn't asked to charge the qb but he did push the pocket often with 2 guys on him. He has a huge upside and I wouldn't be upset if we took him in the 1st no matter who is there. A lot of people talk about playing Donald at the 1 and spelling Melton at the 3 or playing him at the 1 while Melton is at the 3 ... well, that's not his position. It is Jernigans, however, and that would be the perfect scenario for him.

Dallas could get Sutton in the 3rd even by staying put

I love Jernigan, but I think Easly will be a steal in a year. Problem is I doubt he helps much in 2014.

Nix is the best combination of 1/3 in this draft IMO.

Having said that, if you were interested in trying to get the perfect player to fit that bill, you might think about trading for Suh. He is exactly that player.
