Cowboys must rethink draft plans after NFL exec's warning about star prospect

Ole Miss v LSU

The NFL Draft is right around the corner and the Dallas Cowboys have welcomed a plethora of projected first-round picks to The Star for 30 visits.

The team continues to show interest in Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden, who had his official visit on Thursday, but it is still anyone's guess what they do with the No. 12 overall pick.

While WR2 is arguably the biggest need, it's not the roster's only pressure point. Cornerback, defensive tackle, edge rusher and linebacker could all benefit from adding a high draft pick.

Cowboys might regret taking Ole Miss DT Walter Nolen in first round of NFL Draft

While one veteran defensive NFL coach thinks Nolen has the highest ceiling of any player in the draft, one executive raised major red flags about the former Rebel.

Fowler noted that multiple scouts have "maturity concerns" about Nolen, and multiple scouting reports revealed Nolen has a track record of storming off the field in the middle of practice due to frustration. That passion is commendable, but Nolen needs to learn to harness it.

An NFL personnel executive told Fowler that Nolen is "searching for solutions" to remedy his bad habits. The exec also said that any team that drafts Nolen will have their hands full and need a "real plan" to keep him on the right path.

Nolen has all the physical tools to be a disruptive force in the NFL, but he only had one good season in college. He had two subpar seasons at Texas A&M before transferring to Ole Miss, where he posted 6.5 sacks, 25 hurries and 14 tackles for loss in 2024.

A three-tech DT is not a glaring need after Dallas extended Osa Odighizuwa. It certainly couldn't hurt bolstering the interior pass rush, but the one-tech position is a much bigger question mark. Texas behemoth Alfred Collins is a much better fit for the Cowboys relative to Nolen.

When you couple the state of the roster with Nolen's maturity concerns, Dallas should probably lean elsewhere with the No. 12 pick. He'd be hard to pass up at pick No. 44 in the second round, but the Cowboys can do a lot better in round one.

What say you?

Wasted article IMO.......I'm not sure I have seen a mock with him going as high as 12th and certainly not to the Cowboys. Hell, I'm not sure we would even draft him at 44. Too much need at other positions. Not saying he wouldn't have at 44 but not a good fit for our team.

Name one position we need more than DT, and explain why..

First .....we have legit starters at both DT positions in Mazi and Osa. You may disagree about Mazi but the truth is he's a former 1st round pick who improved his game last season, and the new DC has made it clear he has plans for him. As for OPEN starting positions, how about CB.......we lost Lewis and Diggs is likely out until mid-season, maybe. Not to mention, Bland is a free agent, and it's likely Diggs' final year. Whatabout #2 WR........or MLBer or RG?

Breaking News: He gets skipped by all of these teams, and here comes you know who in PHILLY, they take him and he's a FORCE to be reckoned with!!!!

Broaddus said the other day they like him but I agree with Coogi. He needs to go to the right culture. Philly, KC, etc. Certainly not the rotten Jones family "just sell jerseys" culture. And this team is not close to good enough at DT.

Yeah he'll be thinking he's KC or PHI but it's only poor terrible Dallas, Dallas who hasn't won a big game in almost 30 years!!

FYI "Don't ever agree with Coogi" (they look down on you for stuff like that!!! lol

Great he is an emotional reject.

But with those two DTs we finished around the bottom 4 against the run.

I just don’t want to reach for a position of need like they did with Mazi. I would love for Grant or Tyleik to be available at 44 but they won’t be.

I remember before the draft there were articles expressing concern about Jalen Carter. He had "character issues". But when the Eagles were on the board, they didn't hesitate to draft him. So far we have not seen any character issues emerging from Carter. He has been an exceptional player. And who can forget what happened to Randy Moss.

Teams have to do their own homework. Some teams might spread rumors hoping to scare players off the guy they want. Anyone thinking of drafting Nolen would have him in for a visit and have 5 or even 10 guys interview him to see if they get a bad vibe about him.

your truth is only opinion as regards Mazi. He is currently a below average NFL starter.

Talent wise NFL.com still has him as the top DT but recently changed his draft grade to 6.5 Boom Bust Player. My preference is that they pick a high floor player in round one.

Well....you may be right, but Eberflus has given him rave reviews. That tells his starting position is safe. I think the question from fans is whether or not they will draft a replacement. I don't see it.......that's just me.

So you are buying Eberflus "happy talk"? What is he supposed to say, he is dog do do? I would be real surprised if the Mazi/ Eberflus honeymoon didnt end quickly.

Carter was a much better prospect than Nolen.

Carter only slid because of the speeding/accident that lives were lost. He did not slide because of immaturity.
