How did you come up with 4.6?

Signing bonus was 12.9mil, divide that by 4 years, 3.23mil per year. Add in his base for 2008, $830,000, it comes to 4,060,000.00 for a cost for the 2008 season. Subtract that form his scheduled approxtimate 2008 salary of 7mil, and you save 2,940,000.00. Add that to the current cap of 5.339 and you have 8.279 and some change.
Just to throw some extra numbers out there...

Owens, who turns 35 in December, was entering the final year of the three-year, $25 million deal he received in 2006 and was scheduled to receive a $3 million roster bonus Tuesday in addition to a base salary of $4 million.
Seems his base salary was lowered, with a savings of $3m plus..

he also got a $3M roster bonus that counts against the cap if I recall.

His old cap hit consisted of his pro-rated signing bonus ($1.67), his base salary ($4), and his roster bonus ($3), for a total of $8.67.

His new cap hit consists of $12.9 in signing bonus pro-rated over 4 years ($3.225) plus his base salary ($.830), for a total of $4.055.

$8.667 - $4.055 = $4.612

Edit: Hmm....that $1.67 from his old pro-ration doesn't disappear, so you'd still have to do some math with that. If you could spread that out as well over 3 years, I'd guess it's closer to about $4.055 million in total savings.

Fuzzy math.

Maybe that's where I'm confused. I thought that his pro-rated signing bonus was part of the 4mil cap number for this season.

If you are correct, then we have about 9.949 million under the cap.

Either way, I do believe that this is a step to do another signing. Whether it will be Hamlin or Canty or both, I bet we will know in a few days.

See my edit. It's too late in the day for this kind of thinking.

Not to hijack this thread but who would have thought a few years ago that TO would become the team player having faith in the front office and Ellis would become the malcontent. I think TOs faith in Jerry to take care of his contract will help to passify any other player"s worries. Great news.

Owens will receive $12.9 million to sign and $100,000 of his $830,000 2008 base salary guaranteed, for a total of $13 million guaranteed. He is now under contract through 2011.

lolZ, Jerry still hates the number 13 it seems.

Good deal, I'm glad we have an owner like Jerry who wants to keep his players happy when they deserve the money.

I did. I was in favor of and predicted we would sign Owens the day he was suspended by the Eagles. They made it clear that he would never play for the Eagles again but that they would not actually cut him until the day before his next bonus was due. This of course was nothing more than a bitter, spiteful move on the eagles part to inflict maximum damage to Owens.

I was completely convinced Owens in Dallas would work for 2 reasons and no one on this board could convince me I was wrong.

1) Owens' problem in SF and Phila was money. He was underpaid and basically screwed by SF management. Nothing changed in Phila. If you remember, Owens' agent screwed up and cost Owens' his chance at FA because he failed to file the neccessary paperwork in time. Owens was traded to Phila and the eagles used that leverage to structure a deal with little security for Owens. I'm sure the agent was more worried about his own *** and just wanted to get the deal done with Phila.
I knew Jones would solve this problem by paying Owens fair market value for his talent when few other owners would. This would buy/earn Owens' loyalty. It did.

2) In addition to paying him well, Jones would succeed in stroking his ego.

anyone got the salary cap numbers for the next three years? we are going to be in some trouble.

there is no cap in 2010 and we are fine for next year, even before signing Ware.

Add on...

He couldnt take the losing in San Fran.... thought that was settled in Philly. Then his QB doesnt want to throw to him because he "has to spread it around to the other receivers" and THEN his QB chokes and gets tired in SB.

The guy wants to score... the guy wants to help his team win.... the guy wants to win a SuperBowl BAD.
