RDE is still the one glaring spot on defense (maybe S too).

We are set at LDE with the likes of Lawrence and Armstrong and even Jelks or Jackson as a third DE there.

DT is looking better than it has in a few years and if we can get Tomsula to get anything out of Hill, even as a capable backup, DT should be more than solid.

RDE is the issue. They are counting, it appears, on Gregory and Smith, two guys who haven't played football in awhile. They drafted Anae (which I think was a steal at that spot) who might be able to play some RDE.

Griffen just fits. Can rush the passer, can play against the run, can slide inside in some situation situations.

Yes, we have 10.5MM in cap space. But I can fit him in without restructuring contracts. Cut Crawford.

LDE - Lawrence, Armstrong, Jelks/Jackson
DT - McCoy, Gallimore
DT - Poe, Hill, Woods
RDE - Griffen, Smith, Gregory, Anae

Obviously they won't carry 11-12 DL, likely only 10. But with the new rule where you can cal up two practice squad guys on game day, you could have guys like Jelks and Jackson or Anae on the practice squad and call them up for DL depth on Sundays.

Would a team still be able to steal Anae from our PS?

Crazy. No way the Cowboys carry 13 D-linemen. 10 at the most. No room for a Griffen.

i guess they are waiting for aldon smith and randy gregory decision but even if they get re instated i really hope they are not depending on either one at all. they should be making roster decisions like they dont exist at all and if they give anything it is a bonus.

I don't think Nolan uses a right or left distinction, so that doesn't matter. What this team might need is a weak side pass rusher. Lawrence is a beat on that strong side, but they need someone to flash around the other edge to force QBs to step up into those new DTs. I think Anae could excel in that role, but not as an every down guy. To me, and I think this is one reason the Cowboys haven't called, Griffen is more of a strong side guy. The Cowboys are absolutely loaded on the strong side.

I'm not really sure what they can do to address it at this point, but I don't think Griffen is that guy.

Not likely to carry 10 DL or OL on the 53. 10 is usually reserved for the DB's with up to 6 or 7 on the field so most healthy ones are active on gamedays. Also need them and LB's for ST.

I think you're close........I agree they are likely waiting to see what happens with Smith and Gregory but as someone posted, that's risky. Considering the fact we have not locked this position down with a STABLE quality free agent, tells me they are not a concern at all. Meaning, IMO they believe the answer is already on the roster, there are at least a couple of players they know they can sign at any time or they have targeted a couple of back-up players for trade on other teams. The bottom line, the position has a lot of moving parts right now but I'm 100% confident it gets settled before training camp.

RDE won't be an issue. Aldon and Randy are coming and got that edge covered.

You 100% sure they will be able to play at a high level? I mean you do realize Smith is 30 years old and hasn't played in 4 NFL seasons, right?

How many threads are you going to create to plead for Griffen?

As many as it takes.

It's idiotic with the roster they have to wait and hope that somehow Gregory and/or Smith come back from not playing football for a period and can be as effective as Griffen has been, even in his 30s.

They opened the 2019 season carrying 10 DL and 11 OL on the 53. They may have moved an OL later, and been at 10 OL right before the first game.

Why wouldn't you depend on Randy Gregory? Outside of getting suspended for pot, he was showing plenty of promise. And then you have Crawford as a solid all around safety net. And then of course you have the outside chance that Aldon can impress.

Actually, its smart and a very low cost option for the next couple years if Gregory works out.

Griffin is going to cost big money, he is old, will stunt the grown of Gregory, and be a stop gap option. Makes little sense.

Griffen will not cost "big money". At this point, he's likely looking at taking a one year deal. In fact, Clowney is probably looking at the same situation now - a one year, prove it deal. At this point in the game, these older veterans are typically going to get one year deals.

LOL. Griffen being a progress stopper is hilarious too. You know, you can have more than one dominant RDE. So you could have Gregory and Griffen and Lawrence all on the same team. The NYG won a SB with three dominant DEs.

You don't think that you can get 10 sacks out of Crawford, Aldon, Gregory? And from where I am stand, Gregory finally gets a chance to showcase his top end talent going forward. At a rock bottom price.
