I haven't given up on the team, not even on Wade Phillips. But I am upset over how we lost this game.
We played a team that is better than we are...I believe that.
Rivers was incredible...those long passes, even the ones we tipped away all seemed to be thrown perfectly...he was truly impressive today. The SD OL showed just how average our front 3 are...we had no pass rush at all...no push from the front 3 guys at all...little to no pass rush at all. Their OL dominated the game, imo. That Tomlinson is running so poorly behind those beasts is evidence he has no chance of catching Emmitt. By my count, Rivers was hit twice, maybe 3 times all game long...ridiculous. We blitzed 5, 6 guys at times and didn't even hurry the guy, no batted balls, no hands in his face or guys at his feet. We were owned, including DWare.
That said, we still played with a team that's on a five game winning streak and played them pretty even and should have had a chance to win the game. Even with Rivers hitting pass after pass on 3rd downs, the defense still held SD to 20 points, and our offense moved the ball.
Whom do I blame most for this loss?
1. Nick Folk...another missed field goal that was ultimately the difference in the game.
2. Jason Garrett...I loved the drive before the half when we ran the ball down their throats...I loved that we ran it all 4 times down there because it was a statement drive...we were imposing our will and beating them up inside...we gained yardage every single play on downs 1-3.
First down, Barber made a great run down to the one.
Second down, he gains a little.
Third down, he should have gone up and over for the score, but he still had the ball right on the edge.
Fourth down with inches, I'm expecting the QB sneak...you cannot stop the QB sneak from gaining inches with their NT and our front 3; the backers cannot make a play in time. Then I see MBIII at FB for the first time all game, drawing everyone's attention to the new set, so I'm now expecting a fake to Barber and the pitch to Choice who is the Tailback. Garrett hands the ball to Barber from the freakin' FB position, no lead blocker, no head of steam, no room to bounce or find a soft spot.
Insane and Stupid call.
Guys always talk about a team loss, no one play or guy to blame, but when you are playing a very good team and it appears evenly matched, that's bull...the little things DO make the difference.
No points on Folk's miss and No points on Garrett's indefensible call to hand the ball to the FB on 4th down...easily the difference between losing to a great team and beating them.
We still only need 2 more wins to get to 10 and make the playoffs, maybe even win the division, but the pressure on the team mounts with every week that we fail to get to #9.
