Todd McShay calls Florida State's Patrick Robinson a "first-round talent'' but ...

Most experts project cornerback Patrick Robinson as a first-round NFL draft pick, the first player from Florida State to go that high since 2007 (Lawrence Timmons).

But …

“He is a first-round talent,’’ said Todd McShay, the director of college scouting for ESPN Scouts, Inc. “He has the tools. He does a great job with his ability to turn and run. He has quick feet. He understands what he has to do in certain situations, but the inconsistency will drive you nuts.’’

He said for all of Robinson’s head-turning athletic abilities, “he doesn’t seem like he brings the same attention to detail each and every play,’’ and that could cost him a spot in the first round of the draft.

"So he needs to get with a defense that has a good defensive backs coach, that has veteran leadership on that defense and can make sure he’s dotting his Is and crossing his Ts, for lack of a better phrase,’’ McShay said, “because he has a chance to be a really, really good starter in the NFL. But you’ve got to be buttoned up and you have to do everything right from a technique standpoint and a preparation standpoint and those are two big concerns that I think will be the reason he doesn’t go in the first round if he doesn’t.’’

I'm probably in the minority but I think I would take him over McCourty or Nate
Allen. His feet and movement of his hips are the best in the draft. I just think he has the most potential out of any CB in the draft.

The fluidity of him going from a backpedal to running forward with a WR and his cuts following receivers' routes is incredible.

I like him. I'm not sure why McCourty is the only CB talked about at our spot. Robinson and Kareem Jackson have to be in the discussion if we go CB. Wilson too, but he's probably gone before we're on the clock.

I think the reason is because we're looking to draft immediate contributors with our early picks. It may take Robinson awhile to get the fundamentals down, while McCourty is far more polished and will contribute immediately in the return game.

Where does this perception that McCourty will help in the return game come from?

In his entire college career, McCourty had a total of 20 returns, kick and punt.

20 yard average on punts
24 on kicks

He was already on basically every ST unit and their best defender. They didnt want to burn him out and they also had Muhamed Sanu they wanted to try out. Keep that name in mind. They also trotted out Joe Lefeged and Tim Brown(5'7")

It's pointless to look at an average off of 5 punt returns. The average for returns is meaningless as well because it is drastically effected by one superb return. If you remove the 98 yard return then McCourty's average is only 19.8.

His return #s are meaningless.

Then why not take out the return where he had 1 yard in 2007? The whole return unit kinda sucked anyway, it might have been last or near last in all of FBS*

Its about projections. He projects to a solid KR and can play on every ST unit. And probably slide into Newmans spot as starting CB in year 2 and be adequate to above average.

I dont think hes elite as a returner or DB. but hes never missed any games and is a smart leader. To be honest, Im a little surprised to see he could be a 1st rounder. I wasnt expecting that at any point in his career but he makes a lot of sense for us.

Lets see if Kareem Jackson goes ahead of him and maybe we can find a way to get him somewhere in R2

*Edit- 112 out of 120

You don't have to sell me on McCourty as a CB, I think he'd be a great fit in Dallas. However, your question about taking out the return where he had only 1 yard just proves my point. If you do that, his average changes dramatically (just as it did after removing the 98 yard return). When an average can be so drastically altered by the removal of one data point, it shows that you need more data in order to get an accurate picture.

He only had 20 returns in college, there's no way you can say he projects well as a return man. It's just as silly as looking at a CB who had 20 catches on offense during his college career and saying he projects well as a WR too.

Thats a poor comparision b/c transitioning to WR would take years of work.

Returning kicks is something most of the good athletes dabble in all the time. And if they dont, it doesnt take much to get the hang of it. After watching the guy I believe he would be a fine returner in the NFL. Not electrifying but good enough.

The circumstances w/ all these guys are different, we are projecting. Theyd love to try and get Iupati to learn center. If they took him theyd love to see AOA at FS. Mccourty didnt return it a ton b/c they just couldnt have him back there all the time, hes a good enough athlete to do it. If they take him they have that in mind for him

Unless boosting the return unit s something they are really passionate about then maybe they look for help somewhere else.

Personally I question if Arenas is worth taking b/c hes such a poor DB prospect.
