NFL draft experts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay recently went on ESPN's "First Draft" radio show to talk about the Dallas Cowboys. Here's what the two had to say about Jerry Jones' team:
Question: Is the Cowboys' pick at No. 4 a spot where a quarterback can be taken?
Kiper: Sure they can. They can say, 'Well, Romo is playing another 4-5 years,' but did you think that going into last year? He's been hurt now a couple times. He's up there in age now. Can you guarantee that? And will there be a drop off at some point over the next 3-4 years? I would look at Jared Goff if [Carson] Wentz were gone. They coached Wentz at the Senior Bowl. If he were there, obviously that would be a strong consideration. But I think you look at this defensive front, they did add Cedric Thornton, but certainly a player like DeForest Buckner, Joey Bosa, any one of those guys would look good [or] Jalen Ramsey to finish off that secondary and give them a versatile guy. Byron Jones is going to play safety. It gives you that versatility as well. Same thing with Jalen Ramsey. They could go in any one of those directions. Personally, I would take Goff. But it seems like everybody you talk to, Todd, who are kind of insiders say they will not take a quarterback. They're kind of believing what Jerry Jones said a month or so ago and hoping that holds up."
McShay: They've done a nice job kind of quietly in free agency. You mentioned Cedric Thornton. [Benson] Mayowa, Alfred Morris at running back...They've gone out and found guys that they haven't had to spend a ton of money on that can come in and fit what they want to do. I think it gives them a little bit of freedom with this pick. I agree with you, Mel. I would take a quarterback here. We talked about it before, I just don't want to go through Clint Stoerner, Vinny Testaverde retread, and Drew Bledsoe retread and that whole period again where they just couldn't find a guy from Troy Aikman until Tony Romo. Because it's that important of a position, and because it's the Dallas Cowboys, you expect not to be picking at No. 4 again for a long time. This was just an oddity. It's because of the injuries. This was a blip. This is never going to happen again if you're running that organization. This is your chance if you have any faith in Jared Goff, or Wentz. Both of these guys, I think we agree Mel, ideally you sit and you let them develop a bit and adjust; one from the small school level, one from the Air Raid offensive attack that doesn't translate to what you have in the NFL. You put them in a situation to succeed. But if they don't go in that area, then I think, again, you're basically saying whether it's Joey Bosa, a defensive end, cornerback Jalen Ramsey who can be your nickel guy, safety, versatile role there. I think those are probably the two most likely. Myles Jack would probably be in the mix as well.
