And the last, before the team was given the rest of the night off on Family Day, came when coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on the field shortly after the defense held the offense out of the end zone on five of seven plays.

"He better run harder than he ran today at the goal line," Tomlin said of Mendenhall.

Mere rookie mistakes?

"They better be," Tomlin quickly snapped back. "I'm sure they were. He has to run harder, not over-analyze, understand what that drill's about, it's about hitting downhill, and hopefully next time out he'll be better."

One goal-line drill does not a career make and Mendenhall, who scored a University of Illinois record 17 touchdowns last season to go with his record 1,681 yards rushing, will get many more chances.

"It was a learning experience," Mendenhall said afterward. "I think I was more concerned with running the play instead of getting into the end zone. I was trying to read the blocks and get in there, but there's so much going on and coming so fast you just have to get in there.

Thanks... I heard 103.3 saying that the Steelers weren't totally happy with Mendenhall, and had no idea what they were talking about.

Remember those predraft quotes from the scout saying Mendenhall was too much of a thinker?

And remember when CZ almost imploded on draft day when we selected Felix Jones instead?:laugh1:

I don't think this article means much. Tomlin is just trying to fire the guy up.

I Thought on Draft Day that Felix was the better fit here and I see nothing to change my mind.

Then can we please say the same about our coaches' assessments with Martellus Bennett?;)

The coaches comments about Bennett have all been positive, it's the media who are painting him as an underachiever.

I thought Mendenhall's rep was that he was soft.

I liked Felix Jones better, but I knew the consensus was that Mendenhall was better. Regardless, I'm happy with who the Cowboys came away with.

What I heard was that he debated whether he even wanted to play football. That he doesn't give 100% because he doesn't enjoy the game.

Kind of unfair to hold it against Mendenhall because he plays for a coach that will call his players' mistakes out in the media, while everything is sunshine and rainbows for all our players according to our coaching staff and Martellus Bennett is just "laid back".

Who was in chat that totally freaked out and ended up leaving over us not picking Mendenhall?

I cannot remember.

I was pro-Mendenhall coming into the draft but seeing how Carolina passed on him as well (and took the guy I really liked in Stewart) it makes you think that there are some question marks that the pros had that we weren't really hearing about early on.

Goose said Mendenhall needed more carries to be effective.

Nothing wrong with that, but we have a 2 back system, which is why he would be worthless here.

and Pitt has a guy who had like 300 carries last year.

guys who need a bunch of carries simply aren't going to do well in today's NFL b/c unless you can produce like LT, you are sharing.

Those were my thoughts when I first read that too.

That being said, I'd much rather have Felix than Mendenhall.

I was a little worried about the pick of Jones over Mendenhall at the time. Until the next day when they snagged Choice as well. Much rather have the two we got than Mendenhall and....

Nothing from camp has changed that impression. Will be fun to see 'em go next weekend!

See, THAT'S the problem...These kids shouldn't even bother with college first, too much thinking goes on there :D

But Mike Thomlin IS a new school, laid back coach(alot like his former boss Tony Dungy is).

Just saying...
