It should be very interesting. First thing is that MMQB will be there doing their training camp report. Lots of things to talk about, with Dak's week, the competition between the WRs and DBs, the injuries on defense and of course the Hall of Fame nomination for Jerruh. No shortage of topics.
Couple things that I have been thinking about. We have heard that the defensive backs are much more competitive this year, and I am happy to hear that, but it seems on so many of the vines and clips being posted that the corners are getting roasted. It also seems like most of the times that they show a DB winning, it looks like a heck of a lot of contact. Obviously against the Rams we didn't see the defense really pressing on the corners, we were playing a lot of zone. The only CB that really made plays on the ball was Olatoye. Does anyone think we will see them try to put a little more pressure on the receivers this week against the Dolphins?
The Claiborne dive into Dez's legs could have been catastrophic. Thankfully Dez' surgically repaired foot made it through ok but I can only imagine the backlash if he was hurt. Some say Claiborne fell but either way it looked really bad. It seems like sometimes the defense gets carried away....which I like them all to be physical, but if we are running a no tackling practice....it pisses me off to see a defender randomly tee off on a guy. They do it to the running backs a lot. Jackson got popped several times today and of course we all saw the defense "welcoming" Elliott the first couple days. I think you have to either go full hit or no taking to the ground and be consistent with it. None of these random shots.
Saw someone mention after Irving hobbled off that we might only have 5 linemen available for Friday night. Don't we have Mayowa, McAdoo, Jenkins, Russell, Lawrence on the outside and McClain, Crawford x2, Thornton, Coe, Okoye and Collins inside? Isn't everyone back? I could see Mayowa not playing since it is his first week back, maybe the same for Collins. Tapper and Irving out with injuries. Are they going to baby the rest of the vets?
RB and TE battles should heat up. Finally saw Escobar get a catch today, but with Hanna likely out a while he and Swaim need to step up and show something both as pass catchers and blockers. Traylor and Rico will have a chance to get noticed. No McFadden and no Elliott again, so Morris and Jackson are going to get a lot of work again. Maybe the FB's get a few touches. Rod Smith v Keith Smith to determine if we keep a FB at all. With Hanna's injury it probably makes it easier to keep a FB.
Hoping to see a better showing from backup OL. None of them really showed much against the Rams. Looney was meh at C and Leary didn't look like he wanted to be be in there. Green's problems in the second half need to go away....has to do a better job on technique when he is tired.
If Andy Jones is going to put up a fight for 5th WR spot or force team to keep 6, he has to do it starting this week. He was on fire the early part of camp and can't afford another bad outing. I don't think he has a chance honestly, the top 3 are set, Whitehead is our top returner so has a spot and Butler seems to have Romo's trust more than Street or Jones do.
