Franchise-tag values down across the board in 2012

2/19/2012 11:09:28 AM

Tomorrow is the first day teams can start putting the franchise or transition tags on players.

Little was made of it at the time, but the change in calculating procedures for franchise tags could have major implications on several contract negotiations according to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network.

The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the NFL Players Association includes a new formula for the franchise tag, and league sources have said those tags will be considerably lower this offseason than in years past.

In the past, a franchise tag was derived from averaging the top five salaries at a particular position from the previous season. The new formula is much more complicated and is formed by determining the franchise tags at that position over the last five years as a percentage of the overall cap figure in each of those five years.

The new formula will impact contract negotiations with teams using the franchise tag or transition tag more this year.

Click here for a look at what the 2012 franchise tags are for the various positions.

Our only free agent worth franchising can't be franchised.

We certainly will if we franchise Spencer! :bang2:

I'm not so sure. He isn't the best, but he's far from the worst.

The only way I see him leaving is if we're ready for Albright or Butler to start.

I would rather have Butler start than franchise Spencer at 9 million. Let some other team have that Quitter/Jag. 2010 = quitter and 2011 = Jag.

I agree, Butler is a much better option at the price than Spencer at $9M. I'd rather spend that kind of money on a better player.

Wouldn't we get like a 3rd rd comp pick in next years draft if he leaves?

wouldn't we all love a better player, but who? Even if Williams leaves Houston, could we afford him?

I agree 100%, but the case he makes is compelling.

I know an RFA first rd tag requires a first and third to claim, but I was reading an article (don't have link) that stated Spencer could be claimed for that price. Can a franchised player be claimed? Sorry if this is dumb question, but I get confused by some of the stuff I read.

I don't think we have a free agent worth the franchise tag.

The first and third round pick compensation no longer exists. The 1st rounder does however.

I think Spencer being the 4th best player on the Dallas D points to the lack of talent and depth on this team.

Let's say Spencer is the 4th best player on defense: that's really sad.

I'm just so tired of this franchise settling for mediocrity, especially talent wise. This organization has a tendency of overrating its own talent. Based on his production to the team, there's no way you can give Spencer $9 million this year. Would Pittsburgh do it? Would New England do it? Heck, would Philadelphia do it? No, no and no!

This is true, but who is available that would be an improvement?

I understand the frustration with Spencer, but letting him walk without an upgrade at the position will hurt the defense. Is he worth 9 million? No. Will he get 9 million the year? At least that. It is the economics of the CBA.

Letting Spencer walk at this point may make the defense worse.

Whether that's true or not, it doesn't mean he's wrong.

If he's been a staunch Jerry supporter over the years, yeah....he's been wrong. A lot.

Spencer isn't a RFA. He's a UFA. You don't tender those guys, but you can franchise, which last I heard, still comes with a starting price of 2 first round picks.
