Tony Dungy: Tim Tebow will be a great NFL quarterback

I think it depends on how much he wants to be a great NFL player. A lot of times the high profile SEC players struggle with this as their main goal as a football player was to become a great college player, but when they get to the NFL it's not the same and they fail.

But, if Tebow really wants to be a great NFL player and doesn't go to a lousy organization, I think he'll be a fantastic QB.

He'll probably go in the middle of the first round, could go higher as his workout at the combine will go off the charts. The guy can bench press a ton and has a cannon of an arm and runs well.

Dungy is a devout evangelical Christian and at one point in his coaching career considered leaving football for the prison ministry.

Tebow is also very public with his beliefs and work as a Christian.

I think Dungy and Tebow are very similar in their beliefs and the work they do and without trying to offend anyone's beliefs, I think Dungy's appreciation of Tebow has a lot to do with that, rather than his actual QB ability.

Is Tebow a leader? Yes.
Is Tebow a remarkable young man? Yes.
Is he a NFL QB? I'm just not seeing it.

Tebow is a football player though. I really see him as a H-Back/Tight End/Fullback type who will run some guys over. He will get some QB snaps in the Wildcat and maybe even goal line situations.

Please, please, please do not be offended by this. Even though I do not share Dungy's and Tebow's views, I respect them for the men they are and the work they do. I just feel Dungy is promoting Tebow the QB because of his affection for Tebow the man.

Yeah I heard him today on the DP show, it just reiterates why I would never want Dungy having anything to do with the Cowboys.

Yeah, that takes him down a few pegs in my estimation as well. No thanks Tony!

I don't think Tebow will ever be a good starting NFL QB. He may be a good back up, but that is about as good as it will get. Good kid. Great college player.

Reminds me of Bucky Richardson. He obviously has been a part of better college teams and a better college player, but he and Bucky seemed to have the same approach to playing games. Richardson was drafted by Houston and he barely saw the field in three years. Did very little when he did see the field. Houston drafted him in the late rounds since he played college just down the street. Look for Jacksonville to do the same with Tebow except they won't wait until the late rounds to do it.

Intangibles mean squat when you are unable to quickly read defenses and accurately throw the ball. Russell has a cannon for an arm. Vick was an incredible athlete. I could go on but why bother? It just amazes me that a man that spent years watching Peyton Manning could think Tebrow will make it as a NFL QB.

I knew someone was going to go there.

I'm sure Dungy has respect for Tebow because they have similar beliefs. But I've heard other former-player, NFL commentators who aren't considered evangelical Christians say the same about Tebow, how the has leadership qualities and how, if given the right coaching, he could turn into a great QB at the next level.

Dungy is giving his professional opinion. I doubt it has anything to do with the fact that the two share the same faith.

When they start questioning his accuracy and throwing motion its a major red flag. Those are basic things an nfl qb needs to have.

His throwong motion and accuracy need work, enough work that he won't (or actually shouldn't) be a day 1 or even year 1 starter, but with the right work, I think he can be a great QB as well. It's not like we're talking about a noodle arm QB here or a 6'0 or 5'11 guy. Tebow has NFL size and an NFL arm so with the right coaching, the sky is the limit

The thing about Tebow is that he has the size and physical skills that great NFL QB's tend to have. Charlie Ward was a great athlete and also a devout Christian, a good leader and an all-around good guy. But nobody was clamoring for Ward to be a great NFL QB because he was small and while he was a great athlete, didn't have the QB skills to be a great NFL QB.

The system they run in Florida would scare me a bit if I'm a team along with his desire to be a great NFL player. One look at Leinart and I think it's obvious he just never wanted to leave college. That could be the same scenario for Tebow.

But if he does have the work ethic and desire to be a great NFL QB, he certainly have the physical tools and size to do it. He reminds me a lot of Culpepper, but without the fumbling issue.

Hey, I like intangibles ... probably more than anyone, especially at QB.

Like someone already posted, if there's a problem with accuracy, then that's a huge red flag.

Another Gator QB, Danny Wuerffel, had great intangibles and was drafted too high.

It will be real interesting to see how Tebow fits in the NFL.

I like Jake Locker out of these college QBs.

I think Locker needs a good team with really good coaching. His accuracy is still a problem with him. I really like Jimmy Claussen quite a bit. He's one of the few college QB's you see that makes pro-style throws and difficult throws with ease week in and week out.

I never really saw the intangibles in Wuerffel. He played on a loaded Florida team in a pass happy offense that at the time was very QB friendly in the college game. He came to the pros and not only had a poor arm, but made lots of bad decisions. But he seemed to live off his college days as many analysts would erroneously claim that if he just had a good arm he'd be a great NFL QB. Really hogwash IMO.

I agree. However if by some strange chance Dallas did take Tebow would you be upset with getting him? Like you I think we have other areas that we need to upgrade for the future but I can't say I would be overly disappointed getting a guy like Tebow.

Depending on what offensive tackles, wide receivers and safteys are still on the board, yeah, I'd be pretty upset with drafting Tebow.

look for NE to draft Tebow and turn him into a backup QB, LB, S, FB, TE, WR, RB....hehehehehe

I don't agree with Mr. Dungy. Running QBs as opposed to merely elusive QBs do not fare well in the NFL. In the NFL the pocket is vital. He is not accurate enough to be great. Good? maybe he can be. I appreciate his leadership skills and think they are a great intangible. But he is a below average passer.

JaMarcus Russell and Vince Young agree with you.

Tebow already has 3 strikes throwing motion, accuracy and he is a QB from a florida school. Sorry Tim but odds are against ya.

No offense to Mr. Dungy but apart from inheriting Peyton manning what quarterback talent did he acquire or draft in his day?

Shaun King?
