Just heard while watching sports TV that Pollard has only had more than 15 carries once since HS, which was when he was at Memphis. 537 total carries since HS.

The reason why this is so interesting is that Pollard has never been counted on to be an every down bell cow back. Do we want to force that upon him in the NFL? Keep in mind Pollard is a bit north of 200, so he’s not the prototypical size of someone who can withstand pounding.

Based on how all of Tony’s coaches have ever used him, it seems reasonable to me that he’s in a backfield that splits the touches. Now we can argue the ratio, but I don’t think it would be smart to make Tony a 20+ carry guy. Even yesterday as the RB1 he only had 14 carries while Malik Davis had 8.

Can we acknowledge that it’s possible that Pollard’s explosion and fresh legs are afforded to him by coaches not asking him to run 20-25 times a game? Can we acknowledge that it’s possible that Pollard needs Zeke or another RB to take some of these between the tackle blows so he can be used to change the pace and hit home runs?

Seems like both of these RB’s need eachother.

He'd have to bulk up if he wanted to get more carries - he's not built to be a workhorse. He's good at what he does, no need to lose that speed with extra weight.

Either way, 14-15 carries for a single RB a game is not really on the absolute low side anymore with how pass heavy the league is.

Most media draftniks thought Pollard was going to be a slot receiver because of the way Memphis used him. They had a lot of other rbs.

Pollard had:
  • 30/57 snaps
  • 14 carries
  • 12 routes ran
  • 1 target/catch

Add a extra target or two and that’s pretty much the exact split most have wanted Pollard to have. Nobody is saying 25 carries and 80% of snaps as far as I can see. He was only in pass protection 4 snaps too so that’s not really a factor if used right.

A bell cow running back is an outdated concept. I don’t understand why people keep insisting you need one, other than to prop up our extremely slow and overpaid starting RB. Oh look Zeke can be a bell cow RB. It does us no good.

A perfect RB room would be two Tony Pollards.

This is a very astute evaluation of the situation. Having watched TP at the University of Memphis his entire career, it is evident that he's at his best when used intermittently. In fact, he was almost NEVER used straight out of the backfield in college. He did most of his damage from the slot and, to a lesser degree, split out wide. He cannot last long at his present output level being asked to take on a full RB load. All of these "Zeke or Pollard" imbeciles need to stop the crap and view their combined efforts - as the running game produced 150 yards instead of WHO produced it. I promise you that Zeke's pounding on a defensive front has an accumulative effect and makes TP all the more effect when used correctly.

While we’re on this topic, maybe Zeke would still be productive if they hadnt run him into the ground wanting a bell cow running back. It’s so stupid. Im glad he held out and got the big payday the way the team was using him.

Look at Alvin Kamalra and Christian Mccaffery. They’re not getting 25 runs up the middle from I formation.

Cowboys fans longing for the Emitt Smith days. Must not watch other teams play.

Henry and Saquon are the only two guys in the NFL averaging over 20 carries a game.

I am fine with this. I like the idea of him being serviceable for a long time. 300 carries severely diminish NFL RB. Emmitt is an outlier not the norm.

That Memphis was stacked at HB. I think they had two day 2 picks

Running backs ***do not get 20-25 carries a game in today's league!***

Only two in the entire league are currently averaging over 20.

Heaviest worked RBs in NFL, carries per game:
Henry, 23.7
Barkley, 20.3
Chubb, 18.6
Jacobs, 17.3
Mixon, 16.1

League average "bell cow" totes the rock 12-15 times a game.

Wrong...a strong running game still wins in the NFL. Outdated concept theory is bs. Don't call hm a bell cow RB then, call him the RB that is the starter and helps the offense go.

Emmitt was simply a freak of nature as time has proven. You look at virtually every other back that got more than one year of carries like that and it pretty much finished them.
