Honestly, if pain is the issue, being on Rx pain medication that is controlled by his MD is better than ETOH. ETOH is more unpredictable, lot of people take opioids and do so safely….hell, taking an NMDA antagonist (like dextromethorphan aka robitussin DM) with opioids can prevent development of tolerance and dose escalation, and lessen withdrawal (this has been studied actually, in humans)….people have vilified opioids wrongly, people thinking stopping them and starting ETOH don’t know about them and how they have been used by hundreds of millions of people for legit medical reasons without addiction, abuse or overdose.
