Do you think Tony Romo is distracted by fame? Maybe you feel like Romo is in his make or break season, or just maybe, you think Romo is far overrated. The chances that you can relate to these statements is about 90 percent. I say that strictly because where ever you look 9 out of 10 fans are bashing Romo’s very existence.

Just recently I was rummaging through DC.com and read Mick’s latest article “Pressure Cooker” and it inspired me to do a little digging. You see, Romo’s lack of post season production isn’t as frightening as one might imagine. Though the outcry of fans would produce a different story. I simply decided to compare the ever so scrutinized Romo with other NFL greats. The results were just as I expected, Romo was leading the pack and the fair weather fans arguments were proven to be ridiculous.

NAME COMP ATT PCT INT TD RATING W-L RECORD TOTAL YDS
Romo 831 1,307 63.6 46 81 94.7 28-12 10,562
Montana 713 1,130 63 32 52 86.3 18-15 8,069
Peyton 1,357 2,226 60.9 81 111 85.1 32-32 16,418
Aikman 920 1,528 60.2 60 54 74.6 38-27 10,527

Clearly these statistics place Romo on comparable status with HOF caliber Quarterbacks. So what gives? Why the criticism? I accredit it to one of two scenario’s. 1) The fans of today are too idiotic to realize that football is a game of growth and maturity and not a game of instantaneous success, and their ignorance far surpasses the need to gather information and statistics to help them understand the game, or 2) Tony Romo is simply just another victim of Dallas Cowboys Nation. I can only really offer an explanation for one, since I can’t change the disposition of fans.

The Cowboys microscope has been in effect since the 70’s when Tom Landry decided to go with Roger Staubach as his starter over Craig Morton. It then continued with Danny White, and claims of Troy Aikman “going soft” before winning another Super Bowl in 1995. This to me says that no matter how talented and skilled a quarterback is, as a Cowboy he is doomed to being faced with the troubles of Hollywood. Here is where the problem lies, fans easily forget or become blind to the talent that truly lies in the quarterback that is leading their team. Romo has displayed strong abilities in arm strength, pass accuracy, mobility, and throwing on the run, which elevates him to one of the only true balanced quarterbacks in the league.

It is my firm opinion that if Romo was on a handful of other teams he would be referred to as a gem and most certainly a franchise quarterback. We need to realize the facts, we need to open our eyes, and realize that Romo is a worthy and talented leader for this team. Facts speak for themselves.

If we have another year of no playoff wins I cant wait to hear the excuses if it happens. It's like people dont even demand greatness and wins from the guy. He's just perfect and shouldn't be criticized.

its alot better than crucifying a QB in his 3rd season as starter with the stats Romo has as a loser cant get it done just because he hasnt single handedly won a championship yet...it will happen

And others are too busy defending their agendas to notice it. If playoff wins are the only measure of success that can define greatness, then perhaps you should be willing to give Romo the same amount of starts some of these other greats had to achieve it.

So by your definition of great being tied solely to playoff victory's was Trent Dilfer a great QB?

You're so right. I can't stand all those people that say he shouldn't be criticized. They number in the ... well, there are none, so shut your trap already.

I've criticized Tony a lot and cussed his hide many times, but i also realize we could do a lot worse. I guess i'm the kind of fan that realizes when you got a kid with talent, you hang on and hope he gets it done before he's done.

Theory #1: If Dallas suffers another playoff loss and Romo has a perfect game (e.g. no INTs, fumbles, threw touchdowns, etc.), but should the defense not be able to stop the other team's offense and/or Romo's teammates on offense suffer costly turnovers...

...you would be the one of the first on this board to say it was all Romo's fault.

Theory #2: Should Dallas win a playoff game with Romo at quarterback, you will congratulate everyone but Romo for the victory.

Theory #3: You will criticize Romo during every single Cowboys game this season--with the sole exception being IF a Buffalo Bills game conflicts with a Dallas game.

Now, only time will tell whether I'm right or wrong once, twice or completely.

What's funny is that if you look at the guy's post history, he use to rail against people who were overly critical of Romo.

He pulled a Judas. In order to limit the "downer" from losing they become overly critical and don't allow themselves to get excited about the team.

This is a fine post.
Romo is our franchise QB. He will make mistakes, as did other QBs, but he will, when he gets a decent HC, take his team to the Super Bowl and win it.
I hope ever right thinking American will read this and realize that a small cabel of idiots keeps douting Romo.
We don't doubt Romo, we doubt the idiots.
Well done! Bravo! Dewey in Manilla! Huzzuh!

Romo fans sould be excited about this season, nothing like a motivated athlete, Romo must win... fact is Romo looked like Quincy Carter his last game and it has ppl spooked.

...the comparisons to Manning and any other #1 overall pick is senseless, unless you think the NFL equally values the potential of undrafted free agents QBs with "Franchise" QBs.

next time, Romo should beat the iggs to make the playoffs, and all of the scrutiny will be avoided!

Your a better man than I am if you can stomach going back to look at his post history. I can't even read the new ones.

I used to be a Romo fan. Never denied that, but at this point in time he is a shell of his 2006 self.

This has got to be the most absurd subject in the NFL. It's almost become a joke. It's not even worth responding to. We all know where we would be without Romo. Don't let the media and the haters talk Cowboys fans into thinking anything differently.

I can name 4 teams that would not trade their starting QB for Romo right now (taking only playing into consideration, not contract,ect.).

Colts- obvious
Patriots- obvious
Steelers- 2 SuperBowls, still young
Falcons (maybe)- Rookie looks to be great for long time, better than Flacco.

Other than that, I don't think any other team would honestly not trade their QB for Romo.

The Saints would do it. Peyton loves Romo and tried to trade for him in 2006. He would take romo over Brees in an instant because Romo is younger and a better athlete and would excel in his offense.

The Eagirls would do it. They were hoping to be rid of McNabb already, truth be known. McNabb is the ultimate choker who has proven that year after year. Romo has only been starting 2 1/2 years, is younger, and has a brighter future.

The Cardinals would do it. As great as Warner has been lately, we have seen him fall off the map suddenly before, for years. He is old and likely to decline considerably over the next couple years, if he stays healthy.

The Chargers would do it. Just about everyone who watches the NFL can see that Rivers plays with smoke and mirrors. He reminds me of a combination of Bernie Kosar and Jake Delhomme. What do those two have in common. The clock struck midnight on their magic after a short time and the same thing will happen to Rivers soon.

And yes, the Packers would do it. Aaron Rodgers is like the bizzaro Romo. The media loves to love this guy. They would put him in the HOF right now if they could. Well, he had one decent season. Let's see a few more. He has had injury problems in the past and something tells me the Packers are not sold on him completely.

I'd wager that the Chargers certainly wouldn't prefer Romo over Rivers. Rivers has shown more guts in the last 2 playoffs than Romo ever has. And other teams - like the Giants - probably wouldn't either.

The posters who call Romo a choker and say he's terrible go too far, just as the OP in this thread did. The truth is the jury is still out on Romo. Romo is an unproven commodity. From September to November, he's been an ace. In December and January, he's generally played poorly.

How is it relevant how good Romo is 9 months from his 30th birthday, compared to what Peyton Manning's stats were at age 24? We can throw out that Romo's only in his 3rd full year of starting, but the fact remains that this will be his 7th year in the league.

My impression is that the "choker" tag bothers not only Romo, but the team as a whole. If it's not a monkey on his (and the team's) back, it certainly will be after this year. This is a huge year for Romo and Co not to lay an egg at the end of the year and the post-season.
