IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has found himself going back to the archives in getting ready for Sunday's season opener against the New York Giants.

The Giants have welcomed Steve Spagnuolo back as their defensive coordinator this season after he held the job in 2007 and '08, so Romo has gone by to his early years to see what Spagnuolo tried to defend the Cowboys.

Six seasons removed from his first tenure with New York, Spagnuolo has added some wrinkles from his time with the St. Louis Rams (head coach), New Orleans Saints (coordinator) and Baltimore Ravens (secondary coach).

"I look at every game I think anytime I've ever played anybody," Romo said. "So you watch every game that you play. He's got a little bit of Baltimore in him now so he will do a little bit of his old stuff, a little bit of the Baltimore stuff. He ultimately wants to be a pressure guy and he likes to throw some shell dogs and blitzes at you. So he wants to create some confusion. We understand that. We've played against him. We understand that. We've played against him and he's a very good coordinator. He's going to make it difficult on opposing offenses and we have to have a great plan."

Sunday will be the seventh time Romo has gone up against Spagnuolo as either a coordinator or head coach.

He has a 4-2 record in those games, but he has been electric with 17 touchdown passes and just three interceptions. He has three four-touchdown games against Spagnuolo, but Spagnuolo was able to dial up a win in the 2007 divisional round of the playoffs against the top-seeded Cowboys.

"He gives offenses trouble," Romo said. "His scheme, they do a lot. If there are 20 second-and-long and third downs in the game, he wants to run 20 different coverages. We'll see what happens. But I do think over time that's just who he wants to be and part of what they do. He wants to pressure."

Spagnuolo is going to bring the heat. That's all he's proficient at. If the Cowboys offensive line picks it up and Romo makes the reads, it shouldn't be too much trouble. They simply don't have the talent.

That said, they're going to fight tooth and nail, like they always do against us. We are definitely going to earn every yard. This game isn't going to be the cake walk I think a lot of people expect.

Why, Patrick, why?

You got that right. Btw it's been bothering me that Archer said in an article a day ago that the 2007 team was the most talented. While that team was talented, going into the playoffs TO was hurt and Glenn was just coming back and was really worthless. Even had we won that game I'm not so sure we win the SB because of those injuries. Just my .02 anyway

Yes, the DL of giants of yesteryear and especially those Super Bowl years was very strong, they didn't win all those playoff games with offense , it was their defense and aided by good WRs , Eli' s better than normal play in playoffs and those timely chucked ( blindly) throws being caught by some one.

Tony is being nice. He's really thinking, "we're going to wreak havoc and release the dogs of war" on his defense. Let's get it!!!
Just FYI, "wreak havoc" is one thing, "release the hounds" is another thing, and "Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war!" is yet a third thing. But yeah, Tony's going to do all three of them to the Giants D tomorrow.

As long as Jim Haslet, or the late great Jim Johnson is not the DC Tony will be just fine!

I was never impressed with johnson, seems if you can beat his blitz he had nothing. A younger Johnson possibly. But at the end with the Eagles, i didnt see it. Even when Johnson said in a short side line interview when asked "what are you going to do?" He replied, "blitz, blitz and more blitz"

I was just never impressed.

Lol. My bad. My point remains the same, however!
