IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has found himself going back to the archives in getting ready for Sunday's season opener against the New York Giants.
The Giants have welcomed Steve Spagnuolo back as their defensive coordinator this season after he held the job in 2007 and '08, so Romo has gone by to his early years to see what Spagnuolo tried to defend the Cowboys.
Six seasons removed from his first tenure with New York, Spagnuolo has added some wrinkles from his time with the St. Louis Rams (head coach), New Orleans Saints (coordinator) and Baltimore Ravens (secondary coach).
"I look at every game I think anytime I've ever played anybody," Romo said. "So you watch every game that you play. He's got a little bit of Baltimore in him now so he will do a little bit of his old stuff, a little bit of the Baltimore stuff. He ultimately wants to be a pressure guy and he likes to throw some shell dogs and blitzes at you. So he wants to create some confusion. We understand that. We've played against him. We understand that. We've played against him and he's a very good coordinator. He's going to make it difficult on opposing offenses and we have to have a great plan."
Sunday will be the seventh time Romo has gone up against Spagnuolo as either a coordinator or head coach.
He has a 4-2 record in those games, but he has been electric with 17 touchdown passes and just three interceptions. He has three four-touchdown games against Spagnuolo, but Spagnuolo was able to dial up a win in the 2007 divisional round of the playoffs against the top-seeded Cowboys.
"He gives offenses trouble," Romo said. "His scheme, they do a lot. If there are 20 second-and-long and third downs in the game, he wants to run 20 different coverages. We'll see what happens. But I do think over time that's just who he wants to be and part of what they do. He wants to pressure."
