Tony Romo [Week 3 - Week 6]

I think it's fair to say Romo was hot garbage the first two weeks of the regular season, he was easily our weakest link on the Offense. I think it's also fair to say that the reason was due to Romo's lack of repetition, and him mentally and physically not being up to game speed. Which is to be expected for a QB who just recently got off of back surgery. He's greatly improved his play since then, I'd even go as far and make a statement that he's been one of the best QBs in the NFL for these past 4 weeks.

He definitely passes the eye test, he's making smart decisions, throwing crisp throws, giving his WRs a chance to make huge plays, and most importantly, he's dancing around the pocket eluding defenders which is what makes Romo, Romo. He's an extremely dangerous QB outside of the pocket and it looks as if he's found the fountain of youth.

Before this year started many here stated that we should have moved on from Romo. Especially after week 1, where he threw 3 disastrous interceptions and ruined any chance we had at winning the game. People were too caught up in the spur of the moment, and glanced over the facts that prior to that game Romo had only practiced 3 days consecutively, once.

He was still rehabbing his back, and trying to keep it as healthy as possible. And by doing so he sacrificed repetitions and practices, so it was no surprise when he first started the season he was extremely rusty. He was making terrible reads, couldn't get his legs into throws, looked stiff moving around the pocket, and really just wasn't see the field that well. He was everything you didn't want your QB to be, and it honestly looked like this was the last we'd have seen of Romo the play maker. And I admit I had high hopes he'd start the season performing at a high level, but in hindsight it was pretty foolish to think that he'd be able to pick up where he left off without any regression. After all we are talking about one of the hardest positions (if not the hardest) to play in the NFL.

With all of that said, I decided to do some research (with help from @percyhoward). I wanted to see where Romo ranked in comparison to the rest of the NFL QBs since week 3, and to no surprise, he's played just as good as any QB since he's gotten his feet under him.

Below are the results of what I researched, every qualifying QB's stats from week 3 - present.

Tony Romo - 71.20% CMP / 1053 Yards / 9 TDs / 2 INTs / 8.42 Y/A / 9.14 AY/A / 113.8 QB Rating

Simply put, he's having an outstanding year so far, especially since those 2 stinkers in the first 2 weeks. Since those 2 games, statistically he's ranked 3rd among QBs which doesn't surprise me, Tony Romo is balling out right now. Phillip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Eli Manning, and Joe Flacco are some stellar QBs to be ranked with.

Stats are usually a nice indicator as to how well a QB is performing, but despite the stellar 113.8 QB Rating I still don't think it's doing Romo justice for how well he's actually played. Despite having one of his worst career games week 1, Romo is having one of his best years yet and just had one of his best 4 game stretches as a Cowboy. It's amazing what a balanced offense can do for a QB, and hopefully we see Romo continually improve his game as he's done through the first 6 weeks.

You lost me with the first sentence.

Man is Phillip Rivers tearing it up or what. Good for him, and good for Romo. But Phillip should thank whoever his God is he doesn't play under the circus tent that hangs over Dallas.

Rivers is currently the best QB in football

No he is not. Though he played well against 2 good defenses in Arizona and Seattle he has really turned it on against Oak, Jax, Bills (not good against the pass) and the Jets.

And there is a guy named Manning who is still playing in the NFL.

Phillip has had the better start to the season though. But the best? Nahhh

I do not think he is blessed playing in San Diego just ask Dree Brees. Phillip Rivers has been playing well for a couple of years, last year the often injured Oline did not affect his efficiency, and they are competing in a difficult division. He has it worse than Tony IMO just better weather.

LOL no one has it worst than Romo. He had no oline and defense for many years and has basically carried this team on his back until now.

Nice write up, but he lost me here too:

I would tend to agree that Romo was a weak link the first couple of weeks and comparing him to Flacco and Eli is a insult to his talent these last three - four weeks. If we can keep the Bobby Wagner late hits to a minimum this year his numbers should be very good, the long scrambles and his legs keeping plays alive all game(he has one or two a game these days), those days are in his rearview mirror both age and injury are demanding payment on time and in full. This is not Tony at his peak it is a insight as to what could've been if he had a Oline and RB/WR combo when he was younger.

I probably could have left those two guys off, but those guys are respectable QBs in the NFL. Both have played well in the playoffs at one time or another, and both have a Super Bowl ring. They're not even close to Romo's talent level, but they're no slouch either.

Well we will have to agree to disagree. Front office disarray, coaching blunders, lack of addressing the offensive line until recently, the worst defense in football the last two years? And what you failed to even mention was the pressure week to week Tony plays under. Virtually every game is a nationally televised game and trust me, Phillip doesn't have his own segments on various ESPN shows during the course of the day.

Now the weather - you got me there. It's perfect, every single day.

Philip is a gamer like Romo, I am a Romo fan through and through, San Diego if you dig deeper has had the same coaching issues along with draft woes, the big difference like you say is the size of the magnifying glass. He is the QB I would least like to see if we make the playoffs(I know afc), Aaron Rodgers would be a close second.

I agree we get scrutinized more than any other team, Rivers has been good enough to take a team to the playoffs for a long time.
