Tony Romo [Week 3 - Week 6]
I think it's fair to say Romo was hot garbage the first two weeks of the regular season, he was easily our weakest link on the Offense. I think it's also fair to say that the reason was due to Romo's lack of repetition, and him mentally and physically not being up to game speed. Which is to be expected for a QB who just recently got off of back surgery. He's greatly improved his play since then, I'd even go as far and make a statement that he's been one of the best QBs in the NFL for these past 4 weeks.
He definitely passes the eye test, he's making smart decisions, throwing crisp throws, giving his WRs a chance to make huge plays, and most importantly, he's dancing around the pocket eluding defenders which is what makes Romo, Romo. He's an extremely dangerous QB outside of the pocket and it looks as if he's found the fountain of youth.
Before this year started many here stated that we should have moved on from Romo. Especially after week 1, where he threw 3 disastrous interceptions and ruined any chance we had at winning the game. People were too caught up in the spur of the moment, and glanced over the facts that prior to that game Romo had only practiced 3 days consecutively, once.
He was still rehabbing his back, and trying to keep it as healthy as possible. And by doing so he sacrificed repetitions and practices, so it was no surprise when he first started the season he was extremely rusty. He was making terrible reads, couldn't get his legs into throws, looked stiff moving around the pocket, and really just wasn't see the field that well. He was everything you didn't want your QB to be, and it honestly looked like this was the last we'd have seen of Romo the play maker. And I admit I had high hopes he'd start the season performing at a high level, but in hindsight it was pretty foolish to think that he'd be able to pick up where he left off without any regression. After all we are talking about one of the hardest positions (if not the hardest) to play in the NFL.
With all of that said, I decided to do some research (with help from @percyhoward). I wanted to see where Romo ranked in comparison to the rest of the NFL QBs since week 3, and to no surprise, he's played just as good as any QB since he's gotten his feet under him.
Below are the results of what I researched, every qualifying QB's stats from week 3 - present.
Tony Romo - 71.20% CMP / 1053 Yards / 9 TDs / 2 INTs / 8.42 Y/A / 9.14 AY/A / 113.8 QB Rating
Simply put, he's having an outstanding year so far, especially since those 2 stinkers in the first 2 weeks. Since those 2 games, statistically he's ranked 3rd among QBs which doesn't surprise me, Tony Romo is balling out right now. Phillip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Eli Manning, and Joe Flacco are some stellar QBs to be ranked with.
Stats are usually a nice indicator as to how well a QB is performing, but despite the stellar 113.8 QB Rating I still don't think it's doing Romo justice for how well he's actually played. Despite having one of his worst career games week 1, Romo is having one of his best years yet and just had one of his best 4 game stretches as a Cowboy. It's amazing what a balanced offense can do for a QB, and hopefully we see Romo continually improve his game as he's done through the first 6 weeks.
Nice Work.
it appears that Rodgers rating is higher due to 0 INT - however Romo better than him in comp %, yards and Y/A
