At some point, the front office must find Tony Romo's successor. Barring serious back complications, I believe he still has several seasons within him to compete for a SB appearance. However, the team must plan for the future.
Sometimes fans think the best approach is to simply draft a quarterback in the first round regardless of the current team's roster makeup. I believe it would be better for the team to do a proper evaluation of all eligible quarterbacks in every round of the draft who has true SB contending potential. The same study should be made for scouring other team's rosters. That way, the team does not limit itself solely to first round prospects, but can also factor in solid candidates in later rounds and outside the draft.
So, I took a look at how successful quarterbacks appearing in SBs have been according to where they were (or were not) drafted and whether their SB actually team selected them. The information accounts for each quarterback's first SB appearance but not any repeat appearances. Additionally, I have included the colleges and conferences where they were originated, demonstrating the variety of collegiate sources where SB appearing quarterbacks have come from.
Number of quarterbacks chosen by the same team appearing in the SB: 26
Number of quarterbacks chosen by a team different from the one they reached the SB with: 33
Conferences where SB appearing quarterbacks were chosen (along with number of quarterbacks per conference): PAC 12 (10), ACC (9), BIG TEN (9), SEC (8), FBS INDEPENDENT (6), BIG 12 (2), CAA (FCS) (2), C-USA (2), SUN BELT (2), SWAC [FCS] (2), AMERICAN ATHLETIC (1), CCIW [DIVISION III] (1), MAC (1), MISSOURI VALLEY [FCS] (1), MOUNTAIN WEST (1), MVC [FCS] (1), PIONEER [FCS] (1). Note: players were tied to current conferences which may have been different at the time they entered the NFL.
SB appearing quarterbacks chosen by round: 1st (28), 2nd (6), 3rd (8), 4th (3), 5th (1), 6th (4), 8th round and later plus undrafted free agency (9)
