You have to trust your defense. If you don’t, you’re already setting yourself up for a long season. So I believe in those guys. I believe they can be much improved from last season. My job is to score more points than the other team. Obviously, that’s a lot easier to do when your defense is playing great. I’ve experienced that one or two years when we had a top 10 defense. In those years you can rely on them a little bit. In other years you can’t. You can’t just rely on a perfect situation as a quarterback or a player. You’ve got to go create that. Part of that is working your tail off as a unit to handle whatever situation arises. We’re taking steps toward that.

I believe in YOU Tony:)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Tony. Just score 40 a game, and all will be good.

Actually, I think the team will play better defensively as the season wears on. Players will return from injury/suspension, and young guys will improve up front.

How good? Not sure.

Man. We have had very good to great offenses since Romo has been here. Our personnel on offense has changed dramatically. Gone are guys like Columbo, Julious Jones, Barber, Bigg, TO, Miles, McQuefstan, Petiti, Bennett... The list goes on and on. One constant is Romo (with Witten of course).

Since Woody left our defense has been mostly CRAP forever! We sat up in our coffin a year or two only to lay back down and rely on the offense to win games for us. Terrence Newman? Please. Sean Lee is trying to be a leader but can't. Ware was too nice IMO and lead us to nothing. Spencer and Greg Ellis? HA! It just shows me that for all the flak Romo takes, his offenses have been very good/great through the years regardless of the turnstile our personnel has been. ~end rant

What fans will forget (if Romo doesn't score 35 points a game and we have a terrible record) is the fact that the defense has to get the offense the ball for scoring to occur.

If we don't score a bunch, you just know folks will be all up in arms about Romo.

The masses like to pretend they don't like Romo. They are on pins and needles waiting to see him play on Saturday. He's the leading story on Sportscenter and NFL Network all week. Cover story on SI.com, etc. etc. Only people who are not intellectually honest will continue with this "Romo is not a winner" rhetoric.

There is a difference between "You have to trust your defense" and "I trust our defense" so I really wonder exactly where Tony's trust level is now.

The same thought occurred to me upon reading that. Tony's true to his team, no matter what. Good thinking on his part, though.
If he were totally candid, he might have said something like "We're stuck with what we've got. It's not like I have a choice, ok?"

Does anyone really think that Tony believes in this defense?

Whats he gonna say? I know our defense will prob suck so on offense we'll have to try and score 40+ a game if we want to win anything?

If Tony said that he'd be criticized. If RGME said it, it would be all about his heart and knowing he has to put his team on his shoulders and being a leader.

Really, really good to hear this:

Zack is not your regular rookie who’s coming in wide-eyed and not understanding. He feels like a fourth-year guy who knows the system. I’m shocked whenever he doesn’t do something right, schematically. You can do a lot of different things in front of him right before the snap and he still picks it up quick. We’re lucky to have him.

I've been thinking for a while now that Martin isn't acting or playing like your typical first round offensive lineman. He is really, really good. Exceptional. Rare even. That guy doesn't let crap get by him. He's strong, smart, mobile, aggressive, and plays with an edge. He's consistent, ornery, and nothing shakes him. In short, he is everything you could ever want in a first round OL and then some.

I wanted Aaron Donald to be drafted by Dallas worse than just about any other guy since Troy Aikman - but I gotta tell you - Martin is looking so terrific that he has just about made me forget about Mr. Donald. In all honesty, if I could snap my fingers and give Martin to St. Louis and get Donald in Dallas, I don't think I'd do it anymore.

Trust me when I say it is a huge statement for that to come out of my mouth because I still think Donald is going to be exceptional. Very exceptional. However, Martin looks to be a very rare player indeed. Like best OL taken in last year's deep draft. Like someone who can shut Aaron Donald down good.

Martin is going to make plays that only a select few OL ever will.

I think the first 5 or 6 games will tell us all we need to know about the future,

Love reading your posts, so positive and gets me excited about this team. Don't stop thinking positive.

Thanks G. Glad someone likes my posts, lol. Trust me, not everyone does. I also get excited about the team, which is why I want to write it down. There is a lot to be excited about with the franchise.

As far as Martin goes... I really feel like he is a special player. We all knew he was good, but honestly, he's way better than anyone thought.

Martin is the lone bright spot in a fairly gloomy offseason. He is the one player I look forward to seeing.

Yea, Martin is that lone little ray of light shining thru the otherwise dark and utterly hopeless reality of the doomed Cowboys. At least that gives you something, just a little something to hang on to as all else just couldnt be any worse. Dont despair, maybe Martin can get the other guys on the OL like Tyron and T Fred to pick up their game. Maybe it'll even rub off on another player or two, like Dez or Witt.
