The Cowboys are currently slated to have 8 picks in the 2019 draft - including a 4th round compensatory pick for Anthony Hitchens. Here are their projected draft needs.

Tight End

Let's face it. The Cowboys don't really know what they have in the 5 Tight Ends currently on the roster. Geoff Swaim is the ONLY player with any NFL game experience, and he has only 9 receptions - 1143 short of the departing Jason Witten. Dalton Schultz, Blake Jarwin, Rico Gathers, and David Wells are all just big unknowns. That is a 4th round pick, a 6th round pick, a 7th round pick and two undrafted college free agents - not exactly a wealth of draft resources spent at this position. Unless one or more of the youngsters really steps up, the Cowboys will be in the market for Jason Witten's replacement next year.

Safety

It's a toss up which position group is the weakest on the Cowboys team - safety or tight end. The play of Woods, Heath and Frazier will help to determine the biggest need. Woods is very promising, but unproven. Heath and Woods look like special teams aces, and depth at safety. Neither of them should be starters in the NFL. With two 6th round picks, and an undrafted college free agent on the roster, the Cowboys need to augment their safety rotation.

Defensive Tackle

The Cowboys still need a Big Dog plugger to play in the middle of the defense to eat up blockers and stuff the run. Perhaps if Rod Marinelli finally retires, a new defensive coordinator can convince the Cowboys to add some beef to the middle of the defensive line. Also, David Irving is under contract for only another year, and will be a priority free agent next season. The Cowboys could use the franchise tag on him, if they get Lawrence under a long-term contract, and Zack Martin's contract extension worked out. And the Cowboys don't know yet what they have in Jihad Ward. Is he another 3-tech, to go along with Collins and Datone Jones? Or can he plug in the middle.

Wide Receiver

Allen Hurns, Deonte Thompson, and Cole Beasley's contracts will expire after this season. The Cowboys do have an option for a 2nd season from Allen Hurns if they so choose. Also, while Terrance Williams is still under contract for 3 more seasons, all his guaranteed money will be done after this year, and the Cowboys could choose to release him with minimal Salary CAP impact. That will leave the Cowboys with 3rd round pick Michael Gallup, and one of either Cedrick Wilson or Noah Brown - whichever makes the team. Of course they could both be around if one survives a year on the practice squad. The Cowboys may need to seriously look at spending another premium draft pick on a Wide Receiver.

Linebacker (2)

Sean Lee will be another year older, and who knows if his body will hold up? Lee will be the oldest player on the team after 2018, as Ladouceur is set to retire after this season. Damien Wilson and Joe Thomas will have their contracts expire. The Cowboys will need at least two more linebackers in the 2019 draft to continue the youth movement throughout the team.

Offensive Tackle & Offensive Guard

Cameron Fleming and Marcus Martin are on one year contracts, and Chaz Green, unlikely to make the 2018 regular season roster, has only a year left on his contract. The Cowboys will need depth along the interior of the offensive line, and also a new swing tackle.

Depending on extensions given, there is supposed to be a ton of cap space.

I think of there is the bountiful cap space you will see

1) DLaw
2) Dak a year early if he rebounds
3) ET

Then hopefully in position with pick in late 20s-32, to take BPA knowing there aren’t premium positions that have to be filled/great talent available where they pick.

If it’s a bad year in 2018 the new coach will be stepping into a gold mine with good cap space and decent talent already assembled plus a high draft pick.

If they’re picking 1-20, probably looking at a QB because that means Dak couldn’t progress.

If they’re picking 21-30, it’s BPA.

Defensive End: DeMarcus Lawrence, Taco Charlton, Charles Tapper, Kony Ealy, Dorance Armstrong (5)

No real shocking changes to this groups. DeMarcus Lawrence and Taco Charlton will be your day one starter’s after Charlton takes a step forward during training camp. Kony Ealy, Charles Tapper, and Dorance Armstrong will be the rotational players.

*The big wild card which could push Ealy or Armstrong off the roster would be the return of Randy Gregory

Defensive Tackle: David Irving, Tyrone Crawford, Brian Price, Maliek Collins, Jihad Ward (5)

Your starters at defensive tackle will be David Irving and Brian Price. Tyrone Crawford will rotate between defensive end and defensive tackle. Maliek Collins and Jihad Ward will be your rotational players.

Linebacker: Sean Lee, Jaylon Smith, Damien Wilson, Joe Thomas, Leighton Vander Esch, Chris Covington (6)

The loss of Anthony Hitchens forced the Cowboys to take a linebacker with the first pick in the draft. The Cowboys took Leighton Vander Esch to help shore up the position. While the Cowboys do play a 4-3 defense they primarily use two linebackers. Vander Esch and Wilson will sub in at different times during the game. Thomas and Covington making the team based on their ability to help on special teams.

Cornerback: Byron Jones, Jourdan Lewis, Chidobe Awuzie, Anthony Brown, Marquez White (5)

The cornerback group is pretty solid. Kris Richard is taking over the group and his first decision was to move Byron Jones from safety back to cornerback. Your starting outside corners will be Jones and Awuzie with Lewis moving to the slot after Orlando Scandrick’s release. Your reserves are Brown and White.

Safety: Jeff Heath, Xavier Woods, Kavon Frazier, Tyree Robinson (4)

The biggest question of all positions for the Cowboys right now is the safety position. The position was not addressed in free agency or in the draft. While the Cowboys flirted with the Seahawks to trade for Earl Thomas, it never came to fruition. Your starters will be Heath and Woods with Frazier and Robinson as the backups.

https://thelandryhat.com/2018/05/05/dallas-cowboys-post-draft-early-roster-prediction/3/

High up in next year's draft will be BPA...and a need for safety, defensive tackle, and linebacker.

Who knows what will be needed? too early to tell for 2019...who knew that Witten would retire? Who knows if Garrett/Linehan/Marinelli will still be here (and if not, the new guys bring in other players ot fit their style)...God forbid, there are injuries THIS off season that impacts 2019....

too early

I've heard it's supposed to be a strong Defensive class next year, especially Dline. Not sure what the receivers will be like, but probably better than this years crop.

Aside from DT, which we very oddly decided to not address once again, there's no way of knowing what our needs will be in 19 until we see how the acquired youngsters pan out.

Unless Gallup is a #1 type. He does possess that capability.

That's why it's useless until we see what the youngsters do. Wood could be a quality starting S, we don't know yet.

3-Tech will be our top need if we lose Irving. Was hoping Collins would bounce back but he already injured his foot again. The coaches like Ward but its doubtful he is special. Crawford needs to go.

I wanted Christian Wilkins this year. He went back to school. I will probably want him next year.

Three positions I think will compete for top selection;

TE.....With this reportedly being a top heavy defensive draft, we could have a shot at best TE. Hard to pass if there's 10-15 talent avail.

DT.......With questions surrounding both DTs ( Irving contract and Collins health ) we could probably get 1st round talent in 2nd or 3rd of THIS draft.

WR...... Beasley, Thompson and TWill could all be gone this time next year. This unit is in the middle of transition period IMO. Expect more churning next year.

Bonus tip.......Just my take, but unless DLaw finishes top 3 in sacks and plays full 16 games, I see only A 50/50 chance of him returning. Just a feeling this FO do not wanna pa

Every year fans focus on specific position needs at this time of year. The actual needs during the season are most often different than expected.

Everyone but the team seemed to nail the RB need going into the 2016 season.
