Top 2nd round targets

I don’t see any safety in the draft starting ahead of Woods and HaHa, not to mention, last preseason’s playmaker Donavan Wilson possibly getting a chance.

IF Gregory or Smith, not to mention both, gets reinstated, there’s no DE who will get much playing time, but one may push someone else on the depth chart off the roster. This was a very weak year for pass rushers.

Dallas needs a starting CB, and if one of the guys is still there in round 2, he is very likely to get a starting spot in certain packages at least. CB is the next pick.

Woods and Haha are UFAs next year. Same with Lewis and Awuzie.

Cowboys have "starters" at corner right now, same with at safety. Decent to possibly good players, but up-gradable.

If corner is BPA, I'm down for it. If safety is BPA, I'm down for it.

Who are your top 2nd round targets?

DT - Ross Blacklock - TCU
DE - Yetur Gross-Matos - Penn State
DT - Justin Madabuike - Texas A&M
DT - Raekwon Davis - Alabama

LB - Zach Baun - Wisconsin

S - Xavier McKinney - Alabama
S - Antoine Winfield, Jr. - Minnesota
S - Jordan Chin - Southern Illinois

CB - Trevon Diggs - Alabama
CB - Kristian Fulton - LSU
CB - Cameron Dantzler - Mississippi State

Fulton would be a realistic tops on my list.

I don't necessarily disagree with picking a CB, but I don't think ANY 2nd round defender walks in the door as a starter. The Cowboys already have a pretty solid 3 man rotation at CB with Awuzie, Lewis and Brown. As Byron Jones said, he thinks the Cowboys are already very high on their exisitng CB talent, and Canady is a viable 4th cornerback. But since Awuzie and Lewis are both in the last year of their contracts, a CB rookie in 2020 would become a starter in 2021. Hint: Kindle Vildor will likely be available in round 3 or round 4 if the Cowboys miss out on a CB in round 2.

Similarly, DE Smith, DE/DT Crawford and DT McCoy are all on one year deals, so any DT or DE pick could become a starter in 2021 or 2022. At Safety, Dix is on a one-year deal, so picking a safety is not a bad idea for the long-term either, even if Woods and Dix are the starters. At linebacker, the Cowboys will have Vander Esch, Smith, and Lee as starters in 2020, but Baun could be a long-term replacement for Lee.

Bottom line: Like it or not, the Cowboys already have their starting defense for 2020, because the Cowboys have done a good job in free agency adding 3 former 1st round picks in McCoy, Dix and Smith. Gregory and Brown will return from suspension and injury, and the Cowboys resigned Lee to a short one-year deal. But the Cowboys need to plan for 2021,and that is why it is vital to get some good defensive players in this draft. There is no shame in a 2nd round pick having to wait a year to become a starter. (I wouldn't rule out the Cowboys dumping Lawrence after 2020 if he continues to under perform.)

Guys I'd be happy with

CB Jaylon Johnson
CB Trevon Diggs
CB Kristian Fulton

S Grant Delpit
S Xavier Mckinney
S Jeremy Chinn
S Antoine Winfield Jr

DT Ross Blacklock
DT Justin Madubuike
DT Neville Gallimore
DT Marlon Davidson

Edge Zack Baun
Edge Yetur Gross-Matos
Edge Julian Okwara

That's a list of 14 players I'd be happy with. There's still the 3 RBs, a few receivers, 2 OTs, a couple of interior lineman and a few players I either don't like or reaches to go ahead of our pick. I'd say the chances are very high that we get another excellent pick at 51.

Cushenberry C LSU would be a good pick as well.

Drafttek updated their mock draft to account for the actual first round results. They project Dallas taking Yetur Gross-Matos in the 2nd, Troy Pride Jr (CB) in the third, and Rashard Lawrence (DT) in the fourth... not too bad if it shakes out that way.

I hate the idea of CB Troy Pride playing for Dallas. I don't like him as a prospect at all.

DE quality is not good in this entire draft. I wouldn't waste a 2nd rounder on one...DB still has plenty of talent left so I would go there, either S or CB.

I like this list but would add:
Terrell Lewis OLB 6-5, 262 Alabama
Ashtyn Davis S 6-1, 202 California

I would add LB Logan Wilson to that group. I wouldn't bat an eye if we took him at #51. Yes, I think he's that good.

Find me a player from 2 of these lists and I am fine. Maybe trade up and get 3 of them and I am really happy.

CB
Trevon Diggs Alabama
Kristian Fulton LSU
Jaylon Johnson Utah
Cameron Dantzler Miss. State

S
Xavier McKinney Alabama S
Antoine Winfield Jr. Minnesota S
Grant Delpit LSU S
Terrell Burgess Utah S

DT
Ross Blacklock TCU DL
Jordan Elliott Missouri DL
Justin Madubuike Texas A&M DL

DE
A.J. Epenesa Iowa EDGE
Yetur Gross-Matos Penn St. EDGE
Josh Uche Michigan EDGE
Khalid Kareem Notre Dame EDGE

OT/G-C
Josh Jones Houston OL
Prince Tega Wanogho Auburn OL
Lucas Niang TCU OL
Ezra Cleveland Boise St. OL

I love where we are sitting in this draft right now... lots of options and no need to force a pick.

I like Dantzler at CB. McKinney, Delpit, or Winfield at S would be an upgrade. I am fine with DE, though I just don’t see it as huge a need as people paint it with Gregory and Smith more than likely returning and the additions we have made at DT.

Will be a fun night! I like the way we are approaching things and they seem to really be embracing BPA— so we should walk away with some good players today.

Hopefully one of the CB's or Safeties is still there at 51. Would not be surprised to see them take Baun if he is still there though. I see him as a pass rusher.
Getting Baun, even if it takes a trade up, would make me insanely happy.

There's a couple edge rushers and a few safeties I'd like to see the team move up for since they're unlikely to fall to 51 and would potentially fill a hole for years (even if the safety might have a harder time winning immediate playing time from the two veteran safeties).

I'm less enthused about the corners that are left. Hopefully the team has good reason to like them though.

They've done a lot of homework on Gross-Matos

Sadly, I think he'll be one of the first off the board tonight. Guys like him, Epensa, Diggs, Fulton etc.

We've also been linked to Davidson quite a bit. Wouldn't be surprised if we go after him tonight, if YGM goes early

Yes there are some good players there. I hope they land one of the secondary guys.

It's a good point. I wouldn't mind a top CB or S in the second (Fulton, Diggs, Hall, McKinney, Delpit) and a guy like Weaver, Greenard, Lewis or even some of the edge rushers like Uche in the third.

That's too bad but with 18 picks ahead of us and some of them probably offense I know a good player will be there. Davidson is a very good scheme diverse player. I was watching the Senior Bowl DL vs OL and he moves really well for a big man. He and Kinlaw caught my attention.

Give me pass rushers or McKinney/Delpit please. We come out of the first two rounds with Lamb and Delpit/McKinney close the damn draft down!

I like we are going for BPA and not just need but i seriously hope some of the better players available in the next few rounds are defense.
