Um... well, Chad Johnson was a beast even when his QB was Jon Kitna.

And TJ Houshmandzadeh is a possession WR. His receptions are almost exclusively within 10 yards of the LOS.

Remember how average were the Cowboys before Romo took over? Palmer took over an 8-8 team and has done better than 8-8 just ONCE in his 4 years as the starter.

But he has a stronger arm, so I guess that makes him better than Romo. Just like how Chad Hutchinson is better than Jeff Garcia.

And what was Houz under Kitna? Mediocre.

You can say that Romo improved the Cowboys but the talent around Romo is so much better than Palmer has.

"So much better" is a stretch.

Either way, if Romo is just as good or better than Palmer, and has better talent, he should have better numbers... which he does.

As far as intangibles go, Palmer has the edge in arm-strength, Romo has the edge in mobility/elusiveness.

I still haven't seen one good reason why Romo isn't listed and Palmer is #8.

So Palmer makes his guys look good, but Romo doesn't? Bummer. Good thing their W/L records tell a different story.

I said it before. Palmer has done it over 4 seasons, Romo only 1 and a half.

These types of lists are always biased -- not only in ranking but who is left off the list. Perhaps there were qualifiers to the list that kept some folks off even though they belonged.

Where in the hell is Jason Witten? He has been a top 3 tight end since 2004. How is he left off the top 50 list? That alone proves this list is a joke.

Better talent is where Romo has the serious edge -- over the last two years the Cowboys had something like 20 probowl selections -- the Bengals, 5 or 6. Palmer pretty much is that team. They can't run the ball to save their lives. They averaged 3.7 yards a rush to the Cowboys 4.2 yard last year. Without looking it up, can you even name their TE? Would you be able to tell me, again, without looking it up who their top RB was last year? How about on D. Could you tell me their sack leader (here's a hint - he had 4, no joke, 4)?

I don't know if I would take Palmer over Romo, but I can see why Palmer is on that top 50 list. He's an outstanding QB.

I am still trying to figure out how Ben Rothensburg is ahead of Romo. I mean I know that he won a Super Bowl but he is definitely not better than Romo and I don't think that I am being bias.

And like I said... even so, Romo's numbers and W/L record indicate that he is taking advantage of his talent. He had better numbers and a better record than Palmer did, so where is the logic in punishing Romo for his supporting cast?

The issue of Romo playing just 1.5 years is not a legit reason in the context of this list. Mario Williams, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, and others have as little or less experience as Romo, and it didn't hurt their stock here.

It's a repost, even some of the comments, but I think we can let it slide...

Osi Umenyiora Rips Mario Williams
Posted Jul 1st 2008 6:47AM by Michael David Smith

Filed under: NY Giants, Texans, Houston, New York

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports came out with a list of the top 50 players in the NFL last week. Some of it was predictable (Tom Brady and Peyton Manning first and second), some of it was surprising (Kevin Williams in the top 10), and all of it was designed as a springboard for off-season arguments.

One of those arguments took place on ESPN Radio this morning, where Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora (No. 42 on the list) was a guest. When asked what about that list surprised him, Umenyiora said, "Mario Williams at No. 6." He then added, "This guy right here at No. 6 is just absolutely ridiculous."

It's easy to see why Umenyiora feels that way. Williams, the Texans' 2006 first overall pick, did have one more sack than Umenyiora last season, but is he really so much better than Umenyiora that he deserves to be 36 spots ahead?

Maybe, maybe not. But, again, these lists are really nothing more than conversation-starters, and if the list got Umenyiora to express a strong opinion, it did its job.
