This is what my plan would be in free agency and then address rest of needs in draft. Purpose is to get best players. This is assuming we can't sign more then 1 high profile player

Plan A: Get Carl Nicks or Ben Grubbs
If plan a fails go to:

Plan B: Get Mario Williams or Cliff Avril
If plan b fails go to:

Plan C: Get Cortland Finnegan or Brandon Carr
If plan c fails go to:

Plan D: Get Laron Laundry or Michael Griffin

What are yours in order?

get cortland, laron, grubbs

draft OG first

2 new secondary it be on the O line
Smith-Grubbs-(FA(cheap)-Pick)-Decastro-Free

secondary
Jenkins-Laron-Sensabaugh_Cortland Finnegan

It's really hard to project on Landry. He would need a complete bill of health by the Cowboy's Med Department. Their medical side seems to be impeccable, and I would put trust in their appraisals.

In the secondary, I want connectivity between functional parts. I want someone who isn't lost in coverage, but also brings physicality and tackling skills to the run defense. This brings third and shorts into longer pass plays and allows the defensive line to blow at the quarterback.

If healthy, I would go for Landy and Finnegan. They both are dependable in coverage but are also magnets in run defense.

That I would not trust to being left in the market once free agency opens. I would upgrade the secondary significantly, at onset of the open season.

I would then stand in line for the services of both Carl Nicks and also Mario Williams. If a deal could be struck by Stephen, then I would sign them both.

If not, I would bunker down and get realistic on expectations...and focus on the draft. Resigning Dallas veterans as needed prior to that.

That picture includes trigger actions resolved on: Ball, Elam, Coleman, Spencer, and Robinson...

Grubbs, Carr, Red Bryant, Griffith and Dan Connor for depth at ILB.

I really don't think that list is all that much of reach to be honest.

I'll just say out of all the FA out there these are the guys I would be willing to be aggressive in terms of getting them. In my view they are top players under the age of 30. If you plan on making big investment at least do it with guys who are still in the prime of their career. I'm sure the Cowboys will go after some older vets on short term contracts but the real investments in my view is these players

OG Carl Nicks, Ben Grubbs
DE Calais Campbell
CB Terrell Thomas, Cortland Finnegan, Brandon Carr
S LaRon Landry, Michael Griffin

nobody has talked about Tyvon branch or Richard Marshall

My #1 CB is Carr and Number 1 safety would be Branch. I think Branch and Sensy can play both positions.

I like Branch as well, and people have mentioned his name. But I think the reason Griffen gets more attention is because he came out and said he has kids in Texas and Tennessee, so those are the two places he would prefer to play.

That's a GREAT, REALISTIC list. Funny thing though - Montrae Holland basically graded out as effective (7.3 to 5.9 according to the great Pro Football Focus)) as the expected-to-be MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE Grubbs. I was really proud of Haooland when he returned in shape. No matter if we get Grubbs or another highly rated guard, I think they should DEFINTELY bring back Holland.

By Griffith I meant Griffin just for clarity...

I agree with you about Holland and I have no problem with bringing him back. But even if he did work hard to get back onto the field last year, he's still an injury risk and you can't depend on him imo. So he's great as depth, but not a dependable starter.

And its difficult to compare Holland and someone like Grubbs because Grubbs was going up against NFC North defenses including Pitt and Cin which are very good whereas Holland's best games were probably against STL, BUF, and Seattle. It's hard to trust those numbers.
