Trade Down or Trade Up?

Some people hate either. I could never understand that thinking. I love it when the Cowboys make a move in either direction.

When they move down they're picking up value. When they move up, especially just a few spots like they did last year to get Dez, I know they're getting the player they wanted.

Could be a good thing, could be bad. But at least I know they're getting what they wanted. They're not reaching for a need, because the best value at that time has no role for them.

Wanted some opinions on a trade down scenario.......

1st(6th) for 1st(16), 2nd(48) and 3rd(80).
Then take the 16th pick and trade down again for 1st(30), 2(62) and 3(94).

Now our draft board looks like this.....
1(30)
2(38)
2(48)
2(62)
3(70)
3(80)
3(94)
4(102)
5(134)
6(166)
7(198)
7(210)

I know many of you would hate this. God forbid we miss out on that one super star at #6 who'll turn the whole thing around. And I admitt if Peterson is their at #6, this is hard to do. But lets assume he's not and no player at 6 really fills a need, do you go this way?

Just think, we'd have EIGHT of the first 102 players off the board! I also like the distibution of the selctions....8, 10, 14 slots apart. We'd own the 1st 2 days of the draft.

Why give a super blue ship prospect a mega contract and so many cap dollars?
Go sign Mankina to a big FA contract and take a shot gun approach to the draft.

I have a request to all you draft guys........FILL IN MY BOARD!

This scenario cannot be completely dismissed. We will be targeting one or two premier players at 6 or 7 and if they gone they JJ can trade down.I would trade down into the teens in such a situation and still look to add an OT or a corner.Bottom line is we will have a chance to draft a dominant player at 6 and it would not be wise to pass on a sure prospect.

If we are sitting at 6th I would much prefer to trade up a few spots for Peterson then drop down but I'm never opposed to moving around as long as your sticking to your draft board and not just trading to acquire picks.

Thanks for the respones. Either of you care to fill in my draft board?

Just think how much fun day 2 of the draft would be.

Never seen an All-Pro team with out multiple 2nd and 3rd rounds guys on it.

Plenty of Ed Reeds, Darren Woodsons, Mark Stepnoskis and Eric Williams out there for the finding.

When some see something like this they think drafting for back-ups. Hell no. I'd expect to find at least one, maybe two guys who could start week one. And hope to find 2-3 more to play an immediate role and eventually start.

We need multiple offensive lineman and multiple defensive backs selected.

1(30)Derek Sherrod, OT-Mississippi State
2(38)Jared Crick, DE-Nebraska
2(48)DeMarco Murray, RB-Oklahoma
2(62)Quan Sturdivant, ILB-North Carolina
3(70)Ras-I Dowling, CB-Virginia
3(80)Steven Schilling, G-Michigan
3(94)Ahmad Black, S-Florida
4(102)Kai Forbath, K-UCLA
5(134)Mark LeGree, S-Appalachian St
6(166)Greg McElroy, QB-Alabama
7(198)Owen Marecic, FB-Stanford
7(210)James Rodgers, WR-Oregon St

Just a note, I would never draft a kicker unless it was in a scenario like this where we simply had a abundance of drafty picks

Great List.....I think:D .

But you hit on exactly what I was looking for. With soo many quality picks you can fill in a lot of "needs" and still grab a guy like RB Murray if he presents great value.
I like Jones and Choice. But neither has demonstrated All-Pro ability. And we're most likely parting ways with Barber.
So we could use a RB and if one jumped off the board in rd 2. If he was someone who could jump Jones and Choice on the depth chart......you have the flexibility to do it.

In my ideal scenario, were using five of those 1st seven selctions on offensive lineman, defensive backs.

Leaving ourselves 2 selections to go BPA at some other positions. RB and DE. Or ILB and WR. Maybe a QB.

I just like the opportunity for a little redunancy of effort. Most would agree we need help at OL and DB 1st. DL and ILB are also needs.

Now we could draft 4 OLs and 3 DBs. And still have plenty of picks left to work with.

Agreed.

You trade up to get the player you want.

You trade down to get value and get a player you need at his deserving spot. You do not trade down JUST TO ACQUIRE MORE PICKS. Obviously, they are a part of trading down but don't think some extra linebacker in the 6th round is worth moving down from quality.

James Rodgers is applying for another year of eligibilty and will most likely get it.

Tell that to New England. FWIW, I wouldn't trade down for late picks, but I would drop from #6 for NE's 2 first rounders or another team's first + second.

Me neither. There's a method to this madness and I'd have no interest in acquiring extra 6th, 5th or even 4th rd pick.

The goal here is to get as many extra top 100 picks as possible. Dominate the 2nd and 3rd rds.

When I look at the team as a whole, I see plenty of star/impact type guys. Just a ton of guys any GM would love to build their team around.

Unfortunately we have far too many substandard players in key roles. We need draft 5 or more players in addition to signing a couple of FA's to potentially fill those roles:

Starting ROT
Starting ROG
Reserve OL
Reserve OL
Starting FS
Starting SS

I honestly believe we do not need even one All-Pro or Pro-Bowl level player to fill any of these roles.
We just need 6 guys who at worst aren't a liability and at best are above average.

If we could somehow accomplish that this off-season, we could compete for a SB.

LOL

Unfortunately, this is so true.

Jerry's gonna make a trade somewhere. Honesty i dont care how he does it. We just need to score 4-5 good starting caliber players somehow, preferably headlined by one elite talent. Our 2005 draft is a good example. Good players from top to bottom headlined by Ware and we even got lucky finding a gem late in Ratliff. Pettiti was really the only questionable pick. Parcells gambled on a fellow Jersey guy he felt he could coach up.

This is one of the few years where Jerry may strongly consider using future picks.

If PP goes before us trading down is the answer IMO. If we can land our hands on Nate Solder in the 2nd Rd i will be stoked. There is some real talent in the later rounds for our struggling O Line that do not warrant a high 1st Rd pick and just reaching with our first pick for the sake of it will be a mistake.

Nate Solder is the pick that i want for us next year but you could not help but be happy with Carimi and/or Sherrod either.

I could see us trading down a couple with our first pick and then back up into the end of the 1st with our 2nd rounder or future 1st, but it really depends on who's available and the compensation.

No, no and no. That's too much dropping from 6-30. 2nd round picks are not give me's. I look at it this way if we are looking for an Olineman in the first round then we trade down with like NE or a team who needs a QB to the mid first round and draft that Solyder I think his name is. If not then we trade up to either get Peterson or the De from Clemson. If we were rebuilding then maybe i'll think about that but its just too risky.

There's a reason we're going to be picking in the top 10, possibly top 5. We need to stay put and draft a blue chip guy whether it's Peterson, Fairley, or Quinn. You don't trade out when you have a chance to land an elite player.
