Trade down to 20, then draft________. What's your reaction

The three players Ill give you to fill in the blank are Zaven Collins, Christian Barmore, and Trevon Moehrig. What would be your reaction to each? And before it comes up, we get chart value for the trade

Zaven Collins-hate it. Think he is too similar to Lve.

Christian Barmore-think it was a reach, have Barmore more as a 2nd rd player

Trevon Moehrig
-would love it, haven't addressed safety with a premium pick since Roy Williams.

Collins - not excited

Barmore - tepid enthusiasm

Moehrig - applauding their genius

I think a trade down could work for a smart organization. Although not sure if I trust Dallas. They really need a guy with their first round pick who is viewed as a top 5 player on their team for the next 5-7 years. It would help if that guy was a tone setter too.

That player may be available at 20, but it is a little muddier to find him.

In that order.

Collins would easily be my third, especially in light of his weight gain.

I am torn on Barmore and Moehrig. I think I'd side with you and go Barmore. Yes, he has his inconsistencies, but when he's on, he can be a dominant interior player. His skill set is close to elite.

Moehrig
Reach pick, they sure picked a bad year to make safety a priotiry. Comp Jessie Bates.
Who is your CB1?

Barmore
Value pick, build the trenches. Single biggest upgrade they could make to the defense. Comp Marcell Darius.

Collins
Reach pick. Comp Leighton Vander Esch
Who is your CB1?

I've done this trade down a number of times on mock simulators and never had the opportunity to pick Barmore.
I usually get the best CB I can get at 20. Newsome, Farley, the CB from KY.

You do this to get 2 picks in the second round and the deal is NEVER done till you have those guys.

I usually get 2 DTs in this trade down in the second. One of the DTs should be a natural 1T.

D-

EDIT: If J Phillips is around I'd consider picking him here.

I say trade down to no lower than 15 take Surtain or Horn, and then trade back into round 1 and take one of those guys

Hey, if all three of those players are still there at 20--which is very possible--then with the extra picks we acquired by trading down combined with what we already have, we could package move up trades to get all three of these guys.

Not really sure I'd want to use that ammo on Collins though

I would be excited for all three. Our current LB’s, Safeties, and DT’s are basically on one year deals outside of Gally and Hill.

For the sake of this exercise I will assume all 3 are on the board. I will also assume we got Chicago's 2nd round pick and a 3rd too otherwise I would not make the trade.

Then if they take Collins I would be disappointed. Nice player but I am not crazy about him. Too much infatuation with his pro-day numbers and size and not enough focus on his game. The word is he is a finesse player with the size of a brute. The Cowboys need some brutes on defense. They need guys who get meaner the more the game turns against them. A few NFL teams last year said their goal was to smash the Cowboys defense in the mouth and they would fold. It looked that way to me too. So Collins is a no. Draft Derrick Barnes on day 3 and he will be the kind of smash mouth LB the Cowboys need. I might have a different point of view if the Cowboys had another LB who was a lot more physical.

I would be happy with Barmore at 20. But a lot depends on what they do with their 2nd round picks. Barmore would be the first DT taken in the 1st round by Dallas since 1991 when they drafted Russell Maryland. While Barmore is not as good as the top tackles in last year's draft, he will be better than Hill and Woods. Barmore has the ability to push the pocket and they really need someone to do that.

I would also be unhappy with Moehrig. Another good player but I don't see him as a certain impact safety. Last year the top 2 safeties in the draft dropped into the 2nd round. Antoine Winfield was taken at 45 and had a very good year for Tampa. There are a few safeties who will be their in the 2nd round who could be very successful in the NFL. I am thinking of Holland, Cisco, and Grant.

This trade seems too far down to me, but if we did it, here are the two probable options
  1. Cowboys trade 10 and 99 (1405 pts) to Bears for 20, 52, and 83 (1405 pts)
  2. Cowboys trade 10 to Bears for 20 and 2022 1st rd

Count me in all three. What extra picks did we get?

Moehrig...yes...

Barmore is too early and similar DTs can be had in the 2nsd. I am soft on Collins, because as big as he is, he is not physical but finesse player....at that size he needs to be very physical, but every report says he is not. in fact I would rather take Jarmin Davis who is a 3 down LB, with both tackling ability and being able to drop and cover and go side line to side line.
