Dallas trades pick #9 to New England for picks #17 and #33
Round 1) Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
I really don't think Dallas will gamble on Smith at 9, he's too much of a boom/bust prospect and isn't a natural fit at RT. The logical choice would be to drop down and select one of the Tackles who are NFL ready and Gabe Carimi seems like the prototype RT. He was the best lineman in college football this past season and should be a rock on the right side of our line for a long time. I think it's easy to get enamored with Tyron Smith's measurables but I believe Garrett will value Carimi's consistency just a little more.
Round 2/From NE)- Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State
This pick should be the 5-tech that falls due to depth at the position, the other guy who I think could be there is Muhammad but right now it looks like he has the edge on Heyward. Heyward is another reliable player who should have a long successful career in the NFL. IMO he's a little underrated at this point because he was overhyped in the pre-season, expectations were a little unrealistic. Nevertheless, Heyward immediately upgrades the front 7 both against the pass and the run.
Round 2) Stefen Wisniewski, C, Penn St.
Wisniewski is another guy who is NFL ready and could really fit in at any of the interior OLine spots, which is the reason why I think we'll place a priority on aquiring him. Ideally, Wiz can step in at Center while Gurode slides back to Guard, but that's only one option this pick gives us. He's intelligent, which I would imagine is a characteristic Garrett values in his lineman, and has some great family bloodlines. Addressing the OLine twice in the top 40 picks goes a long way in our rehauling process.
Round 3) Ras-I Dowling, CB/S, Virginia
Dowling's been my 3rd round choice for a long time, he was nicked up this year but is a tremendous football player. He answered questions about speed at the combine by running in the low 4.4s and can play anywhere in the secondary but IMO his best position will be Safety. He's got great size and is extremely physical, 2 things that Rob Ryan values in his defensive backs.
Round 4) Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville
Drops a bit because of some character concerns but he could be a steal at this point in the draft, has starter potential and should battle for the Nickel position as a rookie.
Round 5) Nate Irving, ILB, NC State
Another guy I've liked all along who brings intensity and leadership, falls due to a slower 40 time than expected. Adds much needed depth to the ILB position, could be a starter down the line.
Round 6) Henry Hynoski, FB, Pitt
Throwback type fullback who upgrades the position.
Round 7) Aldrick Robinson, WR, SMU
Crapshoot in the 7th but Robinson looks like he might be able to carve a niche as a Slot WR or possible KR.
