Trade from defensive line depth

I read a mailbag on the Cowboys website where a fan wrote in asking if the Cowboys should try trading one of their defensive linemen because of the depth they now have. This is foolishness. Every team tries to get the best depth they can at every position yet there is always some fans that think they should trade some of it away. Fans should get the word trade out of their vocabulary, that and stop playing GM.

It is foolish just in the sense that you won't get anything of value for the guys who are going to get cut anyway.

Of course the team should trade them, especially if they think they won't make it to the PS, but you're not going to get anything for those guys.

I am sure we will get the usual overhyped players that can bring us draft picks, or a player swap. After they have what seems to be a good TC, and a few PS game plays.
Remember Dennis Houston, Rico Gathers, Darius Jackson, others. Houston did make the team last year by default, until Gallup was ready.

We see this every year, and nothing comes from it. Not to be a downer about it, but it is the truth and has been proven over and over, TC after TC.

I think the "tradeable" players fall more in line with guys like Fowler or Golston who could very easily find themselves on the outside looking in of a numbers game. They have real NFL experience and would most likely not be in any danger of being a potential cutdown casualty on most teams in the league. Heck, even Gallimore might be able to fetch a 7th if you found the right trade partner.

Dennis Houston, Rico Gathers, and Darius Jackson were all literally nothing but camp bodies who hardly played a down in the NFL. These are vastly different from actual tradable players that might not make the team.

Yes, I thought about all of that. But neither Hill nor Gallimore could get any trades last year, mid season. And we had vet players before, that were good enough, but still no trades.
Now that could be because there was no interest in trading them away, or the price was not right.

I can see some of these players you mentioned as well a few others as possibilities. But for me, I am not getting any hopes it will happen. But it could.
Maybe toward the end of TC, I will think differently, as usual.

Not only that it wouldn't be surprising to see 2 or 3 DL in training camp either underperform or get injured. You don't want to hurt the depth behind them

Right. Both Gallimore and Bohanna could miss out on the roster this year, and neither has done enough to entice some team to trade for them. They both would need to shine during camp, and then the dilemma would be whether we should keep them. I can't see us keeping three NTs, but I would keep Bohanna over Hankins if their play was equal because we can hold on to Bohanna for a couple of years while Hankins on on a one-year deal. Not quite the same at 3-tech, where we mainly have youth with Odighizuwa, Golston and Fehoko. Gallimore could play just as well as any of them and still be a cut/trade because they are under contract longer.

Bohanna and Gallimore should fetch handsome trade bounty.

Only player I can see having some value is Armstrong…..cheap deal and somewhat expendable but not sure he’d generate much in compensation.

Only so many players can make the team at each position. If the Cowboys will have to cut any player that has draft value it would be smart to make any deal they can. 6th and 7th rounders can turn out to be good players also.

Exactly, and that's what a lot of other teams do.
