TRADES GET EASIER AS OF TODAY
Posted by Mike Florio on June 2, 2008, 10:13 a.m. EDT
It’s June 2. In past years, it was a big day on the NFL calendar.

Before 2006, teams spread the cap hit from cutting a player over two league years only by cutting him on or after June 2. As of 2006, teams gained the ability to cut up to two players each before June 2, and to process the transaction as a post-June 1 activity.

As a result, most of the players who would have been cut on and after June 1 are now cut long before then.

But June 2 now has meaning for a different reason. As of 2006, players traded on and after June 2 will have their cap hits spread over two seasons. Previously, all bonus acceleration hit the cap in the same year.

So player trades are now easier for teams to stomach, given the ability to manage the cap consequences.

Absent an extension to the current CBA, there will be no June 2 effect in 2009; all bonus acceleration for any player who is released or traded will hit the cap in 2009, since there will be no salary cap in 2010.

That was all intended as a lead-in for a PFTV segment on players who could be traded, now that June 1 has come and gone.

You rang?

:wink2:

I'd love it, but think it's unlikely teams are primed to make moves yet.

Well I'm primed and ready to move, so let's get on with it. RW should already have a star on his helmet. ;)

I think we'll wait until Adam Jones is reinstated before we make any overtures.

I'd offer Ellis (double digit sack man) straight up and promote Spencer.

But that's just me.

I would love, love, love that. I think Spencer overtakes Ellis this year anyway and I really like the potential we have in Walden and Rogers.

However, in my mind, Detroit would have to be delusional to trade RW straight up for Ellis (primarily because of age). Nothing I'd like more, but I can't see it happening. The best part for Dallas about that trade would be that we would be eventually turning that 1998 pick we used on Ellis into a young WR who is not that much less a player than Randy Moss... so in essence we'd have gotten Ellis for over a decade and then Roy Williams for most of his career instead of just Randy Moss. :)

I can't see it happening though.

Now throw in the right 2009 pick and maybe it gets done.

I'm keeping my hopes up. :crossed:

If they feel like they will lose him anyway (they know they will) it might be enough.

Not saying it will be offered or accepted. But it is what I would offer to start the talks.

Any idea if Roy Williams showed up to any of Detroit's OTA's?

No, he did not.

No, I'm not surprised.

I would think that gives a slight indication toward his true stance about playing for the Lions.

But that's me.....

Tell you what, send next year's 1st and 3rd rounder for Roy Williams and Ellis and the extra #4 for Jason Taylor.

And then watch Stephen Jones' head explode as he tries to fit everybody under the cap!

Detroit has not made a contract extension offer to him either.

My thought too. Heck, I thought since this is likely his last year in Detroit, they would have taken a late first rounder in the 07 draft for him.

Shows what I know.

If they think they might get three good years out of Ellis instead of 1 from Roy, perhaps they'd make the deal. Who knows? Only Millen, and he may not know he knows. :D
